Chapter 46 : Such XX, there were nine in total…
Looking at the old alley walls covered in creeping vines, Aimiya’s gaze sharpened.
A flash of golden light flickered in her slender hand, and a cross-shaped longsword formed of light instantly materialized in her grip.
The navigation showed she was nearly a hundred kilometers from her home in the old town—far too distant to be a simple case of getting lost.
Who gets lost a hundred kilometers away? She wasn’t some ultimate directionless idiot.
“Oh? Looks like you’ve figured it out, noble Miss Angel?”
Suddenly, a vaguely familiar voice sounded from above and to the side.
Aimiya’s eyes narrowed, and she swung her longsword toward the source.
A crescent-shaped golden sword aura burst forth, instantly carving a meter-wide gash in the alley.
“Damn! Looks like you’re even more impatient than I am, Miss Angel! Well, that’s perfect—I can’t wait to claim your corpse and soul!”
The black-robed man’s slightly disheveled figure appeared before Aimiya.
A portion of his cloak on his right arm had been sliced off by some sharp object.
Clearly, he’d been perched on the alley wall, preparing his opening speech, only to nearly lose his arm to Aimiya’s lightning-fast strike.
“Come forth! 【Corpse Bearer】 blessed by the god! The time to serve the great god has come! Defeat this vile traitor (angel) before you! Offer her body and soul entirely to Him!!!”
With the black-robed man’s fervent gesture, a giant hand, formed of countless biological remains and covered in eerie blood runes, burst from the ground beneath Aimiya’s feet.
The severed limbs on the hand writhed grotesquely, and decayed arms—some reduced to mere bones—reached for Aimiya’s ankles.
“A defeated foe resorting to sneak attacks?”
Iphilia had once been injured by a 【Corpse Bearer】 hidden in a wall, so Aimiya was already prepared for attacks from all directions the moment she saw the black-robed man.
Her angelic wings unfurled instantly, their pure white feathers flapping swiftly, lifting her into the air just before the disgusting limbs could grab her.
“ROARRR—”
The 【Corpse Bearer】’s full body emerged from the ground.
Aimiya keenly noticed this one differed slightly from the one she’d slain before—it was covered in strange red runes and noticeably larger.
But since it was a 【Corpse Bearer】, its 【magic immunity】 trait should still apply.
Like last time, close-quarters combat to find an opening with her counter gauntlet should do the trick.
Just as Aimiya prepared to dive toward the 【Corpse Bearer】, a fierce red light flared.
Roiling flames shot straight at her.
Caught off guard, Aimiya couldn’t dodge in time and shielded herself with her wings and longsword, taking the scorching flames head-on.
“Ugh!”
The burning pain in her wings sapped her strength, forcing her to plummet from the air.
But her exceptional reflexes kicked in.
She adjusted her position mid-fall, rolling to cushion the impact and create distance from the 【Corpse Bearer】. Even so, she sustained some scrapes.
“How… magic?”
Aimiya looked up, her eyes filled with disbelief.
There was no mistake—the flames that had just struck her were a third-tier fire spell, 【Crimson Flame】, capable of instant casting.
Though its damage was low, its range and impact were formidable, typically used by mages to repel assassins in close-quarters ambushes.
But even so, it was undeniably magic!
Casting magic required not only mana but also the construction of mana circuits and magic arrays, meaning the caster needed at least basic intelligence.
Yet the 【Corpse Bearer】 before her… a puppet stitched together from human remains… lacked even the rudimentary intelligence or mana found in ordinary human corpses!
“Heh, surprised, Miss Angel? That’s right—this 【Corpse Bearer】 is different from the one you killed before.
It contains noble blood!
So, Miss Angel, surrender now, and I might let you keep a whole corpse to meet the great god.
Otherwise, I can’t guarantee that pretty little face of yours won’t get hurt in the fight”
The black-robed man’s voice dripped with smugness as he feigned regret, extending a hand toward Aimiya.
She scoffed disdainfully, using her longsword to prop herself up.
Pointing the blade at the nearly seven-meter-tall 【Corpse Bearer】, she spoke calmly.
“Just basic magic. You think a surprise attack is enough to defeat an angel? That trick might work on my dimwitted kin, but against me… heh.”
“True, how could a single magic-wielding 【Corpse Bearer】 defeat you, with Gabriel’s counter miracle? But sorry, I’m a simple man. In situations like this, I just… add a bit more.”
Add a bit more?
What did that mean?
A sense of unease stirred in Aimiya’s heart, and she instinctively stepped back.
The next moment, as the ground shook violently, her foreboding became reality.
“BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!”
Eight more colossal 【Corpse Bearers】 adorned with blood runes burst from the ground, their massive forms instantly shattering the alley walls.
Pairs of blood-red, menacing eyes locked onto the stunned Aimiya.
The air filled with the rotting stench unique to their decaying bodies.
“I made nine of these 【Corpse Bearers】! How’s that, Miss Angel? A grand gift prepared just for you!!!”
The black-robed man stood on one of the 【Corpse Bearers】’ shoulders, laughing maniacally.
Even Aimiya, a combat-proficient angel, tensed up.
Her counter miracle wasn’t something she could use recklessly.
Against this number of 【Corpse Bearers】, even she could only flee.
But at the same time, she felt rage at their numbers.
The ordinary 【Corpse Bearer】 from before had been made from the remains of at least ten different people.
And now, with so many larger 【Corpse Bearers】…
How many people had this bastard killed to create them!?
Damned scum!!!
