{Chapter 41} Anna Being Teased
"Things are moving too fast."
Lying in her bedroom, sandwiched between the sleeping Louise and Helga, Anna recalled the events of last night. She couldn't help but feel a surge of anger at her inability to take charge, and her cheeks flushed with embarrassment.
"This can't happen again," she thought. In her simulations, falling into such a comforting trap usually led to an imperfect outcome for her.
Now, another person had entered her thoughts, Atala. She couldn't abandon someone she cared about, could she?
Before, when Anna was unaware of Atala's feelings, she wouldn't have thought much of it. But now, sensing that Atala likely had feelings for her, Anna felt compelled to stay by her side.
After all, she had feelings for Atala too. Why not add one more to her life? (With the shameless reasoning of a scoundrel.)
Anna briefly imagined a scenario where Atala was also involved. Oh, the sheets were still damp from earlier!
"But... it's time to get up, right?"
The clock in the bedroom pointed to 8 a.m. Though it would be easy to break the habit of waking early after half a year, Anna wanted to maintain this routine for a while longer.
"Anna, it's not time for you to slack off yet," she encouraged herself silently, trying to free herself from the arms of her companions.
But she was pulled back under the covers.
"Just a bit longer," Helga murmured, still dreaming.
"Senior, don't leave," Louise whispered, caught in some sorrowful dream.
"Well, maybe a little more sleep," Anna conceded.
Unable to leave and concerned for Louise's distressed dream, Anna gave in to her lingering drowsiness and fell asleep.
---"Anna! Anna!"
"Idiot Senpai! Wake up!"
A confused Anna was dragged up by Helga and Louise, her face filled with bewilderment.
Who am I? Where am I?
"It's already this late, and you're still sleeping in," Louise pointed at the clock, which had just struck 8:30. "You've only been unemployed for a few days, and you've already become so lazy!"
"Sleeping in isn't a good habit for an adventurer," Helga added, speaking with authority.
Unfortunately, Anna's confusion remained.
"I... I was already awake. Aren't you the ones sleeping in?" Anna tried to defend herself, but no one believed her.
"Idiot Senpai, if you're awake, you should wake us up," Louise said skeptically. "Are you just making excuses?"
"You... Me..."
What kind of excuse could she make? That she stayed because Louise was having a sad dream and she felt bad leaving?
Wasn't it their fault for pulling her into their dreams? Who would disturb their sleep like that?
"Fine, it's my fault," Anna gave up. "I won't sleep in next time. Let's go have breakfast."
"Alright, alright..."
Unbeknownst to Anna, the two young ladies shared a knowing glance.
In truth, they had woken up when Anna tried to get up.
But Anna would likely never discover this fact.
In reality, the awakened Anna was still wondering why she hadn't started a simulation last night.
---"Hey, why are we going to Baggs County today?"
Anna encountered her three roommates at the breakfast table, still nursing their hangovers from the previous night's drinking binge.
The servants from the previous evening's dinner had not returned but stayed in the servants' quarters, preparing breakfast early in the morning.
Seeing the hungover trio, Anna directly suggested to Gianna that she leave for Baggs County early.
"...Though there's nothing much for me to handle in the knight's order, going a day early wouldn't be a problem," Gianna said, puzzled. "But why the rush?"
"The man, John Burrito—Duke of Lunareth," Anna frowned. "He hired someone to assassinate me."
"What the hell?"
Now not only was Gianna shocked, but even Scarlet and Little Anna were wide awake.
"What's going on?"
"Well, it's like this..."
Anna recounted the bandit attack once again and added, "I'm worried that he might target you if he finds out you're my roommate. It's better to avoid that scoundrel."
"Got it," Gianna's face turned serious. "The pure-blood faction... I didn't realize you were targeted by that group."
"No wonder you couldn't join the Royal Knights. Isn't the current commander a pure-bloodist?" Scarlet pondered.
"The commander... he's not exactly a pure-bloodist but is controlled by them," Gianna's expression darkened. "The pure-bloodists are the parasites of the kingdom."
"Manipulating the court, bewitching the current king... Claiming purity, they seem to aim for usurpation."
"After all, the current king is a fool," Little Anna blurted out, then immediately shut her mouth.
"Well, it's common knowledge anyway, no need to avoid it so much," Helga said casually.
"But why assassinate Anna just because she has elven blood? That's insane!" Scarlet grew angrier. "Assassinating someone for having elven lineage, what kind of lunatics are they!"
"...Actually, there's more," Anna hesitated but eventually revealed her celestial lineage.
"Holy crap!"
Now not only Little Anna and Scarlet were shocked, but even the usually unflappable Gianna was stunned.
"You have celestial blood?"
"Isn't that noble lineage?"
"How could you be a fallen noble?"
"Now we understand why the pure-bloodists are so adamant about assassinating you."
The revelation of Anna's celestial blood caused a greater shock than the earlier mention of John Burrito.
"I only recently discovered my celestial lineage, but even with it, I can't fathom why the pure-bloodists are so obsessed with assassinating me and offering such high bounties," Anna explained.
"That's true... Though you inherited the blood of elves and celestials, the current Garland family is just a fallen noble," Scarlet, who tended to think rationally, fell into deep thought. "The pure-bloodists control the court... Even if you were alive, they already manipulate the court. Having one more celestial-blooded individual wouldn't affect the succession... So why are they so fixated on assassinating you..."
"Perhaps Anna has even more secrets."
"More secrets, but secrets are still secrets," Anna sighed. "I wish someone like Philsey would appear to explain it all."
