A Righteous Female Knight Never Compromises!-Chapter 65 : Please, Sir Knight, stop asking!
{Chapter 65} Please, Sir Knight, stop asking!
The Palace had another masked man? Seeing the name on the simulator interface not matching her expectations, Anna was instantly dumbfounded.
However, upon careful consideration... the castle was so vast that it wouldn’t be unusual for there to be a couple of people wearing masks...
After hesitating for a moment, Anna quietly gestured behind her, adding another signal soon after. Before long, Atala and the old butler followed.
Though the name was different, it still concerned Anna deeply. Jean Caolius... the surname was what truly mattered.
Caolius, Anna’s memory wasn’t that bad. Theodore’s full name was Theodore Caolius, wasn’t it?
Sharing the same surname made it hard not to think this person was related to Theodore, especially in a palace where Theodore had already consolidated so much power that the king was practically a puppet.
Now, another Caolius appeared, wearing a mask... It was impossible not to suspect something.
Thus, she sent Atala and the old butler ahead while she observed the surroundings. If they had the wrong person, it didn’t matter, they could knock him out and administer the extremely expensive memory-erasing potion, which only wealthy families like Louise’s could afford.
That way, he would forget everything about being knocked out. Of course, the dosage had to be controlled carefully. If not handled properly, he might lose all his memories, reverting to an infant-like state... but the old butler was reliable enough to avoid such mistakes.
After wandering around for a while to familiarize herself with the area, Anna checked her pocket watch.
About an hour had passed. She wondered how Atala was doing and whether they had managed to restrain the target.
“Crash—”
Suddenly, the sound of shattering glass echoed, followed by chaotic noise and screams from somewhere, startling Anna. Instantly, the atmosphere within the castle changed, becoming far more serious.
“Assassins!”
“Someone’s been kidnapped!”
Numerous armored guards began running through the castle corridors. Anna was stunned, unsure of what to do.
“Why are you still here? What’s your role?” asked a fully armored knight, approaching her with a hand on his sword hilt. Perhaps due to the pig-faced helmet or other reasons, the voice was muffled, making it impossible to tell if it was a man or woman.
“I... I’m a servant of Lady Louise of House Latimir. I was just wandering around...” Anna stammered.
“Latimir, huh?” The knight’s pig-faced helmet was not only ugly but also offered poor visibility, with only two narrow slits for sight. Though Anna couldn’t see his eyes, she could feel him sizing her up, especially glancing at her chest.
Of course, he wasn’t looking at her nearly flat chest but at the Latimir family crest pinned there, a symbol Louise had personally attached to her clothes to mark her as a member of the household.
“Looking human but so timid,” the knight muttered before patting Anna’s shoulder gently. “Don’t worry. Go back to the reception room. Do you know the way?”
“I... I...” Anna continued pretending to be terrified.
“Never mind, follow me.” Fortunately, as Anna had guessed, the knight was kind-hearted and quickly led the way.
As they headed toward the reception room, Anna cautiously asked, “Sir Knight, could you tell me what’s happening?”
“Don’t call me ‘sir’ or ‘knight,’” the knight paused. “A noble was kidnapped in front of several people. The palace guards are now searching for the culprit.”
“Is that so...?” Anna wondered if Atala and the old butler had acted but was confused about how they could have done so in front of others.
Or was it a coincidence? There was no way to know now. Anna could only pray they were safe while continuing to act frightened.
“The kidnapped noble... who would dare kidnap a lord?” Anna muttered.
“Do you always call everyone ‘lord’?” The knight seemed exasperated by her fear. “Don’t worry, we’ll catch the culprits.”
“To commit such a crime in the palace... and to target that Balin fellow... hah.”
“Balin?” Anna was surprised the knight mentioned the name.
“Balin Lorand, a detestable man. He’s always sneering and loves making jokes at the expense of nobles and us knights to amuse the king. He’s nothing but a clown.”
“I-I see...” Anna’s mind raced. Balin Lorand had been kidnapped? The simulator’s expansion module might have many missing functions, but it could accurately display a person’s name and age.
So... was Balin Lorand’s real name Jean Caolius? No, she couldn’t conclude that yet.
It was possible that Balin Lorand had been kidnapped by another group, and Atala and the old butler hadn’t acted against the masked man. That would be the worst-case scenario. She had to stay calm.
“You look like a new servant,” the knight observed.
“Ah... yes,” Anna nodded vigorously, as if her head were powered by a motor.
“That makes sense. You said you’re a servant of House Latimir, and I was wondering why I hadn’t seen you before.” The knight’s words sent chills down Anna’s spine. “If you’re a new servant, it’s understandable... Louise always has a knack for strange arrangements.”
What was this knight’s status? How did he seem so familiar with Louise? Had she encountered someone important?
“You seem to be quite trusted by Louise. She even pinned that adamantine emblem on you... What’s your name?” Anna shuddered.
“My... my name is Anran. I don’t have a surname yet.”
“That sounds like an Easterner’s name. Are you from the Holy Phoenix Empire? You don’t look like it, though...”
“I have Eastern ancestry. Hello, thank you, dumplings, goodbye!” Anna thanked the knight’s academy for teaching her the standard languages of various countries, including the Holy Phoenix Empire’s, which she had excelled in.
Please, Sir Knight, stop asking! The more he asked, the less confident Anna felt.
