Chapter 138: Chapter 137: In an unknown planet 3
Layton had always been serious about his safety, so in such an uncertain place where they lacked proper medical equipment, Ryzel was sure that Layton wouldn’t allow him to touch anything he deemed dangerous.
Well, Ryzel also knew his limits. Even if he was really interested in studying the plants, if those plants turned out to be dangerous, he wouldn’t touch them. At most, he would just ask Layton to collect them for him to study later once they returned to the Federation.
He still cherished his life to just risk it by studying dangerous plants recklessly.
They still had enough storage boxes to keep the plants from withering, so Ryzel could wait until they returned before conducting a full study.
However, if it was absolutely necessary to examine them immediately if the plants were urgently needed, then he didn’t mind studying them right away, even if it meant taking some risks.
Ryzel kept thinking about various things about those plants and other things for nearly an hour before Layton returned.
"You’re back already?" Ryzel said as soon as Layton opened the cockpit and stepped inside.
"Yes. I just inspected a 10-kilometer radius around us, so it didn’t take long," Layton replied while entering and closing the cockpit behind him.
"I see. But why didn’t you scout farther out?"
"There’s no rush to study things farther away right now. We won’t be heading that far for the time being because I still need to repair Storm."
"Did any animals come near while I was gone?" Layton asked, glancing at the screen.
"None. I didn’t see anything besides the usual plants outside. Did you come across any animals while you were exploring the forest?" Ryzel asked in return.
"There are indeed animals, but they’re mostly gathered on the plains outside this forest. There are also some in the forest, but none in this area because a large animal has already claimed this place as its territory."
"So there really are animals here. But we’ve already stayed here for a while, why hasn’t that animal come to check us out?"
Ryzel knew that most animals were territorial, and when something entered their territory, especially after something unusual happened, they would usually investigate.
When Storm crashed, there should have been a loud noise, yet the animal whose territory they were in never showed up to check on them.
"That animal is injured, so it hasn’t come to check on us yet."
"Oh, then if it recovers, it’ll definitely come here. Should we move away?"
"We can stay here for now. We don’t need to move immediately, since the animal won’t be able to come check us out for a few more days.
I’ll start repairing Storm first. After I do the basic repairs, then we can move.
It’s also better to stay here for the time being because we only need to watch out for that one animal. No other animals dare to enter its territory, so we won’t be disturbed if we stay here."
"I see. By the way, how’s the environment outside? Can I go out without my protective cover?"
"The gravity on this planet is almost the same as the gravity on the capital star. The air quality and other environmental conditions are also fine.
There’s no issue found on this planet. In fact, it’s actually very suitable for living, unlike a lot of planets in the Federation that had to be adjusted to make them livable."
A lot of planets in the Federation actually weren’t naturally suitable for living, especially for guides.
That’s why most of the planets that had human inhabitants had their atmosphere, gravity, and other environmental conditions slightly adjusted in the areas where people lived.
Those with higher physiques actually don’t have problems adapting to changes in gravity and other natural factors of different planets.
However, guides, who typically have very low physical stats, can’t adapt to such changes easily.
That’s why all the human living zones had converters installed to stabilize gravity and other vital factors.
Most planets patterned their living conditions to match the capital star as the standard, so there wouldn’t be any issues.
There are only a few planets that naturally have living conditions similar to the capital star, and it seemed like they were lucky enough to have landed on one of them.
"That’s nice. That means I can go out and study those plants, right?" Ryzel said with a smile.
"Yes. I already scanned the plants around us, and they aren’t poisonous.
But you still need to wear your basic protective cover when going out of our tent.
If you don’t want to turn on your protective cover, you can just stay in the tent, and I’ll bring you the plants you want to study."
"Ok. I’ll study them up close first before bringing some into the tent."
He still wanted to look around and observe the plants in their natural environment with his own eyes before collecting samples to study inside the tent.
But just as he looked outside to decide which plant to study first, he suddenly remembered that they hadn’t even set up the tent yet.
"But you haven’t even set up our tent," Ryzel said, looking at Layton with a hint of accusation, remembering how he hadn’t been able to move around properly because of Layton.
"Ok, I’ll go clean up the space for the tent now. I’ll set up your healing cabin immediately," Layton said, caressing Ryzel’s cheek with a small smile.
Ryzel didn’t comment on the healing cabin and just said, "If you’re going to clear a space for the tent, then be sure to remove the plants properly without damaging them too much. I still want to study them."
"Ok, I’ll go set up the tent now," Layton replied, then stepped out of Storm again.
Layton decided to set up the tent in front of Storm so that Ryzel could still see what he was doing from inside.
Layton removed the plants around the tree first using some digging tools, but after clearing the plants, he also had to dig out the tree.
Actually, both of them probably didn’t have proper digging tools for trees. The only digging tools in Ryzel’s space were the ones suitable for smaller plants.
He even had those tools only because he brought them when they went to Planet 125 to dig up herbs he needed for the stabilizers.
He brought the tools just in case he needed to dig something himself, but in the end, he hadn’t even used them.
This time, though, he would definitely use those tools to collect some of the plants he needed.
However, those tools were really only meant for smaller plants and not for trees.
Then, Ryzel saw Layton bring out one of the swords he had used before and start using it to dig up the trees in front of them.
It seemed that Layton didn’t have any proper digging tools for trees either. Well, Layton could actually solve the problem easily by just pulling out the tree. With his strength, Ryzel knew that would be simple for him.
But if he directly pulled the tree out, the surrounding plants would likely get damaged. So, Layton had to use his sword to dig around the tree a bit before pulling it out.
Thankfully, the trees around them weren’t too dense, so Layton only had to remove two trees to make enough space for their tent.
If Layton really had to use his sword to dig up a lot of trees, Ryzel would probably feel sorry for the sword. The sword had been used to cut enemies and zergs, but now it was even used for digging.
Layton placed the plants and trees he removed directly into one of his space boxes so they wouldn’t get damaged.
So, after clearing a wide enough area, Layton took out a small box, clicked something on it, and it automatically expanded into their tent.
It also automatically braced itself on the ground and floated about one foot above it.
"The tent looks more advanced than the other tents. It even has automatic levitators. Is it also distributed by the military?" Ryzel asked as Layton opened the cockpit.
"No, that was customized by my mother. She gave it to me for personal use, but I’ve never used it before."
Layton had his mecha, and they also had their spaceships and airships, he really didn’t need such a large tent at all.
But now that they were conserving energy, since they didn’t know how long or how far they were from the Federation, they had to be careful and be more frugal in using energy.
Even though they still had an airship that they could probably use, Layton hadn’t mentioned it at all.
Instead, he said they would set up a tent, probably because airships consume energy even when they’re just on standby, and they require even more power to maintain their protective cover.
Besides, the airship wasn’t spacious enough for daily living, unlike the tent Layton brought out, which was about as wide as their bedroom.
