Pei Zhan glared at him, and Fu Zhen also shot him a look.
Su Xinger pinched the mouthy one and stepped forward, saying, "I’m just saying it’s inconvenient for you to leave at this moment, not that we’re stopping you! Aunt Ning and Aunt Pei mean that this matter isn’t over yet. Once it’s done, you’re free to do whatever you like; it’s none of our business! After you leave, I’ll introduce you to someone else!"
Fu Zhen, feeling pushed aside, had a gloomy look in his eyes.
This girl was already siding with Liang Chen, clearly no longer seeing things his way.
The two kept quiet, making Pei Yu annoyed. He bent his knee and kicked Pei Zhan’s leg from behind, "Have you turned mute?! Why are you dawdling like this, are you a man?!"
Ever since Pei Zhan had taken charge of the barracks after returning victorious, he hadn’t been this irritated. He turned back with annoyance and then looked at Fu Zhen, muttering, "I’ll go along with what she says!"
Su Xinger’s eyes roved about, "She? Who’s she?"
Pei Zhan gritted his teeth, "You might as well say something!"
Fu Zhen looked up with a smile, "Alright, if Zhan Er says so, then it’s so."
With those words, the room fell into silence, only to be broken a moment later by Liang Zhi’s burst of laughter!
Pei Zhan felt a wave of embarrassment, sucking in a sharp breath. Such a term of endearment was tolerable in private, but how could she say it in front of so many people?
But Fu Zhen continued, "Since Zhan Er doesn’t want to leave now, then we won’t leave. We’ll discuss it when he wants to."
Six pairs of eyes turned towards Pei Zhan, who was at a loss for words!
His face grew tighter, and as his throat struggled, he unexpectedly choked and let out a series of coughs.
Liang Zhi, smiling, patted him on the back, "Look at you getting all excited! Don’t rush, good times are ahead!"
Seeing Pei Zhan’s face turn completely dark, Liang Zhi gleefully pushed him back into his seat, "Alright, alright, let’s get back to business. What were we talking about? Where have the Xu family members been escorted to?"
The Xu family was now only a hundred kilometers from the capital, and since they were all in prison carts, a journey that would have taken a day on horseback was stretched to two days.
Back when Jiang Lin led a team for a night raid on the old residence of the Xu family, he left two people to keep watch. Therefore, when Xu Yin was later caught, the court sent people to Tanzhou to capture the remaining members, and it was done with little effort.
However, because Jiang Lin’s team triggered the Xu family’s defenses that night, their actions were exposed, and Zhou Yi and the guards hidden in the old residence immediately took action.
The day after Jiang Lin left, a large number of people withdrew from Tanzhou, leaving only two guards who couldn’t handle the situation alone and chose to focus on Zhou Yi and a few of the household staff.
The people being escorted to the capital now were those staff members.
This matter was already being handled by the government, and Pei Zhan and the others were only participating due to their important roles in the barracks.
The group was merely paying attention to these updates, as life had almost returned to its usual rhythm. Those with duties continued their work, while those without, like Fu Zhen, were figuring out how to live the remainder of their lives.
Since the palace upheaval, they hadn’t sat down properly to exchange information till now.
To keep these two individuals engaged, they had to revisit these clues.
After all, if they were to take on the investigation, they could request this favor from the court.
Further conversation led back to Mr. Ning’s death—whether it was mere paranoia or there was actual suspicion, they felt the need to personally uncover the truth for peace of mind.
This discussion went on until after dinner, after which Pei Zhan and Fu Zhen escorted the others out.
As she looked through the carriage window at the two standing in the porch together, Su Xinger turned back and said, "What a great match they are! You all complained about this and that, and now that they’re actually apart, let’s see where you’ll cry! How many heroic men like Brother Wu are there in the world? And yet you claim he’s not fit to be a son-in-law!"
Liang Chen nodded, "It’s our fault."
Su Xinger continued, "Whether a forcibly picked melon is sweet or not, you have to pick it first to know; you can’t decide before trying. There’s a long way to go!"
Seeing her meaningful gaze, Liang Chen asked, "What are you planning?"
Su Xinger smiled cunningly, "What do you think?"
With that smile, her elegant eyes formed slender lines.
But at barely twenty years old, having shouldered the burdens of the extensive Liang family, she had gained a few premature worries compared to girls her age.
Liang Chen gazed at her intently, pulling her into his arms, "I’ll listen to you. I’ll do whatever you decide."
