"If they’ve already arrived in the capital city, regarding the conviction of Xu Yin, there are still some matters I wish to clarify. I ask for Your Majesty’s permission to meet with them."
The Emperor looked at him. "You should go to the imperial guard office and find Commander Zhang Yuan; he is responsible for this matter."
"Thank you, Your Majesty!"
Pei Zhan expressed his gratitude before taking his leave.
After leaving Qianqing Palace, Liang Chen couldn’t help but pull him aside. "What else do you need to find out from the guards? Hasn’t everything about Xu Yin already been investigated?"
Pei Zhan thought of the trouble caused the other day when a group came over, and he frowned. "Even if I told you, you wouldn’t understand."
Liang Chen scoffed and blocked his path. "Are you still jealous of Xu Yin? Are you a man or not? Are you that petty? You know he once had a marriage agreement with my aunt. Isn’t it too late to be upset about it now? What were you waiting for? You’re willing to get into a spat and seek a divorce over him. How could you bring yourself to do that?"
Pei Zhan gave him a sidelong glance. "Who told you I was jealous of him?"
"Isn’t it obvious?" Liang Chen snorted through his nose, his eyes cast askew, "We’ve gone through life and death together for so many years, and yet I never realized you didn’t marry all these years because you were thinking of my aunt. That shows how persistent you are.
"No one else or anything else could bother you, except Xu Yin. He spent so much time with Aunt. She was focused on revenge and had no feelings for you, which surely made you overthink. Dare you say it’s not true?"
Pei Zhan squinted at the glazed tiles opposite, standing straight. "What is Xu worth? I won’t give him a second thought."
Liang Chen’s scoff was loud like a firecracker. "Keep being stubborn then!"
With that, he dropped the matter and strode ahead.
Pei Zhan called out, "Aren’t you coming with me to the imperial guard office?"
Liang Chen didn’t even turn around. "Can’t be bothered with you!"
Pei Zhan said, "Come with me, and I’ll tell you a secret later."
Liang Chen ignored him.
Pei Zhan then turned and headed towards the guard office.
Just a few steps forward, a gust of wind swept past him, and then Liang Chen appeared in front of him like an arrow.
"What secret?"
Pei Zhan smiled. "You’ll find out when you come with me!"
...
The imperial guard office was on the west side of the Imperial Palace.
Commander Zhang was coincidentally training archery with the guards. He warmly greeted Pei and Liang with tea before inviting them to demonstrate with the bow to the guards.
Pei Zhan, obligingly, picked up the bow and arrow, then casually asked, "When did Commander Zhang return? Did you to Her Majesty?"
Zhang Yuan’s expression tightened. "Did the two generals come from His Majesty?"
Liang Chen laughed, "We’re asking you, and yet you’re dodging. Without the Emperor’s permission, how could we dare ask these things of you?"
Zhang Yuan quickly replied, "Forgive me for my ignorance and offense." Then he said, "We returned to the capital three days ago and ed to His Majesty first thing. Her Majesty was present, so we didn’t separately to her."
Pei Zhan drew the bow fully and shot an arrow straight at the target’s center, then amidst the guards’ exclamations, continued to ask, "Over the years, have you always only ed to His Majesty during your multiple trips outside?"
Zhang Yuan personally handed him another arrow. "Not exactly, in earlier years after ing to His Majesty, we also went to Kunning Palace to to Her Majesty. Later, Her Majesty said listening made her more disappointed each time and told us not to bother unless we had definite news. So these years, we stopped going specifically."
Pei Zhan gazed at him. "What do the guards in Kunning Palace usually do? Do they leave the palace often?"
"Her Majesty hasn’t left the palace for years, so the guards at Kunning Palace only need to protect within the palace."
Pei Zhan shot another arrow and handed the bow back to the guard beside him. "Besides the guards by His Majesty’s side, who else in the imperial guard office needs to go out regularly?"
Zhang Yuan thought for a moment. "Basically, those following the Emperor’s orders. Apart from that, only people from Prince Yan’s Palace need to go out regularly to procure herbs and such."
"Prince Yan?" Pei Zhan accepted a cup of tea and glanced at him mid-sip.
Zhang Yuan nodded. "A few medicines that Prince Yan uses annually are rare, and the Imperial Hospital doesn’t have many in stock. So, we need to go out a few times a year, usually waiting in Yunnan, Sichuan, and other places for the new stock to be collected.
"As soon as the collectors gather them, the brothers at Prince Yan’s Palace will immediately send them back to the palace."
Pei Zhan furrowed his brows.
By this time, Liang Chen had already finished shooting three arrows and came back.
Pei Zhan then placed the cup down. "It’s been a while since I’ve paid my respects to His Highness Prince Yan. The Great General and I will go there for a visit."
