Chapter 547: Chapter 357: Brothers (Seeking Monthly Pass)
Due to the distance, the people guarding at the foot of the mountain couldn’t see the faces clearly.
Naturally, none of the words could reach their ears either.
Fu Zhen looked around and tugged at Pei Zhan’s hand, "Let’s change location, go up the mountain and have a look."
After speaking, the two of them stealthily moved to another direction under the shadow of the wall and circled up the mountain from the side.
What was called a "mountain" was actually just a small mound, said to be soil dug up when the lake was excavated, piled aside and became a mountain.
The monks thought it should not be wasted, so they planted trees and built houses on it, thus making it a part of the temple complex.
The people down the mountain evidently didn’t enclose the entire mountain but only guarded the paths at its two ends.
Fu Zhen and Pei Zhan entered from the side through the bushes, tiptoeing towards where the lantern’s light was.
Fortunately, the rustling of the wind-blown leaves served as a cover, and the little noise they made could be disregarded.
With a few brisk steps, Pei Zhan led Fu Zhen from one tree to another; hearing voices from ahead, they immediately halted and hid among the treetops.
The lantern’s light just managed to illuminate the shadow of a person under the tree. The tall and imposing man was undoubtedly Yang Yi, and upon seeing the person standing in front of him, both Fu Zhen and Pei Zhan gasped involuntarily!
"It’s King Yan!..."
...
In the woods, the lantern was already hung on the treetop, and He Zhao and the person holding the lantern had been sent away a short distance.
Yang Yi looked at the person in front of him, "Haven’t seen you in two years, you’ve grown taller."
"I’m already eighteen; every year on this day, I come to Longquan Temple, but my brother never comes to see me." King Yan’s voice was gentle and slow.
Yang Yi slightly curled his lips, stepped forward, and patted his shoulder, "Still so thin. Is your illness any better? You’ve been seeking treatment every year; there should be some improvement."
King Yan shook his head, "How can my illness get any better? There are so many skilled Imperial Physicians in the palace, but after so many years, they haven’t cured me. It’s just dragging on."
Yang Yi fell silent; evidently, he didn’t know how to respond to such a topic.
"Brother," King Yan lifted his head, his voice now a bit more lively, "Do you know about the recent events? The Prince Rong father and son who attempted to kill you have been captured."
Yang Yi nodded, "I know." As he spoke, he turned his head, casting a glance at the mound they had just worshipped, "They died because of me; if they knew below the ground, they could find some solace."
"Brother’s deep feelings and righteousness will give them peace of mind." King Yan also walked to the mound, his voice low in comfort.
Yang Yi laughed bitterly, "What deep feelings and righteousness do I have? They were just fine, yet died because of me for no reason. I will never be at peace in this life.
"After the truth of the case came to light, I considered whether to move them out for a proper burial, but I couldn’t think of a more suitable place than this pure land of the temple.
"I hope the Buddhist chants here can bless them to be reborn soon."
King Yan, hearing this, looked up at him, "What does brother plan to do in the future?"
Yang Yi looked ahead, "For now, I’m wandering around. Perhaps later, I’ll return to our ancestral home. I’ll buy a few acres of barren land, and live out my life like that."
"Did you come to the capital this time specifically for their memorial?"
"No." Yang Yi shook his head, "There are some other matters. I’ll leave once they’re settled."
"Where are you staying?"
King Yan’s eyes were touched by the light of the lantern, clear and bright.
Yang Yi pondered for a moment, avoiding the topic, "Did you wait here specifically for me?"
"I did wait here specifically for you." King Yan walked around the mound, stopping in front of him, "Among us three brothers, our second brother is no longer here; you’re the only brother I have left.
"After the second brother’s ambitions were exposed, it was a great blow to both our father and mother. The court is uneasy, fearing father won’t make it through. Aren’t you really planning to enter the palace to see them?"
"There’s no need for that." Yang Yi turned his back, "From the moment they decided to abandon me, my ties with them ended.
"Even if by any chance he doesn’t make it, you’re still in the palace."
"Me?" King Yan smiled bitterly, "With my frail body and chronic illness, how much better am I than father? Even if I can rule this empire, it doesn’t mean it can be passed down.
