Chapter 56

Chapter 56: Chapter 56 - Stupid
Reiner stared at Dante, her hands shaking. Two of her companions just died.
Her mouth trembled as she struggled to find the words.
Dante waited and readied himself. His expression was cold. There was an air of a killer around him.
"So?" He added. "When are we going to stop?"
Reiner shook her head and dropped her staff. She lifted up her hands, surrendering to her.
"You know me right?" She said, "We talked in that bar, remember?"
Dante frowned and dug up his memories lane.
Wait.
His eyes widened as he remembered what she was talking about. She was one of the freshmen they met before that giant palm descended onto the earth.
He nodded, slowly. "But that was in the past. You attacked me. What is going to change?"
"I am sorry." She said hurriedly. "I was forced to do that. If I don’t do that, they are going to kill me?"
Dante tilted his head. "Go over there." He said, pointing at the tree.
Reiner followed his command and walked. She stood silently waiting for his next word. Dante jumped down and walked over to her staff. He grabbed and used mana to check it.
There were runes engraved into the staff, seeming to strengthen his mana output.
He began to think about the situation. He didn’t want to risk his life for some stupid stuff.
"Sat down." He said flatly.
Reiner nodded and sat in the snow. He walked over her and looked down.
"Alright. I will spare you." He said.
His cold voice seemed to relieve her a little and she immediately stopped tensing. She nodded repeatedly and started to cry out.
Dante scratched his neck, not sure how to advance from here.
He didn’t want to take life unnecessarily. He crouched down, trying to meet her eyes. He stared at her crying.
’At least those are genuine tears.’ He muttered inwardly.
He let out a long sigh. "What are you doing with those guys?" He asked.
Reiner didn’t answer and continued to cry out. He waited for the answer. He didn’t know any way to give her sweet talk.
Julius would be the best in this situation. But he was not here so she had to deal with him.
After a while, her tears stopped and she finally looked up. Her face was a mess from all that crying.
But her eyes shone with new things under those messes. Dante felt uncomfortable staring at her but he didn’t evade his gazes.
He had learned a lesson from his previous relationship.
"Can you talk now?" His voice was calm, trying to stop her from crying again.
She nodded. "When we arrived here, we were in the group of them."
She pointed at the two men.
Dante nodded. "And? How did it come to this? Where is the other girl?"
"At first, our group struggled, but the Union found us and gave up a place. We lived in their camp. But slowly the situation got worse."
Her voice trembled at the end as she remembered the things she saw and experienced.
Dante nodded. "So the Union placed you guys into their base."
"No." She said, shaking her head furiously.
"They don’t take us. Instead they put their man into our group. They said they wanted to expand their territory. Then hell reigned from there. They were savages. They took advantages of us and made us do things"
She didn’t reveal what the Union’s man did but Dante could guess. And he didn’t like what he thought.
She began talking. She talked about how they killed everyone who tried to flee. Her blonde friend was one of those.
But before they killed her, they enjoyed her.
Dante nodded, calming down his anger. He didn’t understand how a human could change this much. It had been more than a month and yet, they forgot all about morality.
"Are there any people from your groups left?"
"A few. But they are most likely into the Union, especially the men."
"Is there anyone you wanted to save from your place?" Dante asked.
She thought for a moment and shook her head. "Not anymore. All my friends are dead. The living ones are up to no good as well."
Dante nodded, standing up. "Follow me."
He walked over to his cave with Reiner behind her.
The cave was warm. Dante immediately noticed the difference between the air outside and here.
He sat down and gave the woods to the fire, making it burn hotter.
"What is your class?" He asked.
"Apprentice Mage." She answered quickly. "My spells are limited. It is just a basic spell."
Dante nodded and continued. "And your profession."
She paused and dropped her head low. She then answered with a soft voice. "Prostitute."
Dante clicked his tongue. He regretted asking the question.
He took out the map and checked. There was a base of the rebellion near them. "I will take you to the rebellion."
She flinched.
"Don’t worry, I will make sure that you will not experience the same." Dante reassured her. "I am in a friendly relationship with them."
He didn’t reveal the fact that the rebellion’s leader was his father.
The sun slowly settled.
"Are you hungry?" He asked.
Reiner shook her head, she tightly hugged herself in the corner.
Dante sighed and lay there. He fell asleep but he still had his eyes range so he would wake up as soon as Reiner tried to do something stupid.
And she was not stupid enough to attack him in his sleep.
Dante woke up and rubbed his eyes. He didn’t have a great sleep. He looked over to Reiner.
His eyes widened as he found the state she was in.
A small knife played beside her as the blood formed a pool underneath. Her eyes opened. Her expression was calm, almost forming a smile.
She killed herself.
Dante walked over to her and closed her eyes. He then punched at the wall in frustration.
"Damn it." He cursed. "Stupid. Stupid."
He didn’t know who he was talking to. Was she stupid enough to end her life? He didn’t know.
Is there anything he could do to stop her? He didn’t know.
He didn’t know anything. He was lacking in everything.
He placed his hands on his face and muttered. "What is wrong with me?"
But he knew something. Something was wrong in this place.
