Chapter 568: 570. Raid
The main difficulty on the field now is how to prevent these people from calling for reinforcements.
Geralt and his party arrived in Sintra at the onset of the war, experiencing the entire war that led to Sintra’s downfall.
They now have some understanding of the Niflgaard army’s situation.
These people are scouts, sent by the main force of the Niflgaard army.
Most of the time, they maintain a team of fifteen, patrolling regularly within areas delineated by their command.
Ensuring that if an emergency arises, there are at least three additional teams within signaling range to respond promptly.
If the signal arrow is deployed and they can’t promptly leave the battlefield and clear their retreat traces, then over forty fully armed Niflgaard cavalry will come chasing from behind.
Both Geralt and Ged are well aware of their own capabilities.
These scoundrels have dismounted for their ’entertainment,’ turning into heavy armored infantry. Even if they can’t kill them all, they can still retreat alive.
But if the signal arrow is fired, facing over forty Niflgaard cavalry...
"Do you still have any magic potion?"
Geralt asked Ged while walking.
Although the lighting conditions are poor, Demon Hunters have better night vision than ordinary people, even without consuming [Cat Eyes]. This allows them to conserve energy by walking and shortening the distance for an attack before entering the enemy’s visual range.
The Bear Demon Hunter grinned.
"Magic potion... Ha, I used it all up when the tough times first began. You might as well hope Dandelion can knock somebody out with a stone rather than expecting me to have magic potion."
Geralt wasn’t disappointed and shook his head.
This answer was expected, as he had also used up all his magic potion at the start of the war.
It was just when the battlefield front reached them, and the survival environment was more dangerous than now. To ensure survival, they consumed all the potions they could then.
The horse watcher saw them at this moment and immediately took down a spear from the saddle.
A loud shout and another Niflgaard soldier appeared from behind the fence. His belt was hanging around his neck, with a sword tucked into it, as he was busy fastening his breeches buckles and repositioning his leather groin guard.
Geralt and Ged were already very close.
He could hear the laughter of the men, who were having fun with the girl on the haystack. He took several deep breaths, each intensifying his killing intent. He could calm himself, but he didn’t want to.
Because he also wanted to find some ’entertainment’ now.
"Who’s there? Stop!" the horse watcher shouted, raising the spear, "What are you doing here?"
Neither of the two Demon Hunters answered him.
Their glowing eyes in the dim light each found their target.
"Bang!" *2
The bowstrings of two crossbows echoed.
From the Bear School’s hand, the arrow pierced through the horse watcher’s eye, making him howl like a beast. Then, uncontrollably, he fell from his horse, crushing several fencing stakes near the horse’s legs.
He really shouldn’t have removed his helmet for the upcoming entertainment.
Meanwhile, the Wolf School’s arrow lodged between the legs of the Niflgaard soldier who had just drawn his sword.
He still hadn’t secured his groin guard.
After taking this arrow, he couldn’t even make a sound from the pain, merely gasping and clutching his lower body on the ground, his eyes bulging like a dead fish.
Before the others could react and pick up weapons, the Demon Hunters were already among them.
Ged’s armor was far more reliable than Geralt’s, so he led the charge, with Geralt following closely behind.
The Bear School Steel Sword cut a perfect arc in midair, then snapped onto the nearby Niflgaard soldiers like a whip.
To ordinary people, slashing iron armor with a longsword would usually only interfere without effectively killing. But to the Bear School Demon Hunters adept in slashing, this was achievable.
The torso and limbs couldn’t withstand the sword’s sharp edge, blood splashing onto Ged’s face which he had no time to wipe.
The fallen corpses and gushing blood fully made these Niflgaard soldiers realize how different the two people charging into them were.
One soldier’s trousers were still tangled around his knees, and without having time to pull them up, his carotid artery was slashed. He fell backward, comically swinging his yet unsatisfied manhood.
This was Geralt’s sword, as Ged typically decapitates when slashing this area.
Another soldier bared himself naked, covering his head with both hands, only to have his wrists severed completely by the Bear School Steel Sword.
This was due to removing the armor too quickly, leading to a priceless display of battlefield fear from lacking protection.
He actually believed flesh and blood wrist could block steel.
The joint surprise attack by Ged and Geralt was indeed effective.
In the first contact, they lay at least ten enemies bleeding on the ground!
But the training and quality of the Niflgaard soldiers did not allow the advantage of the two Demon Hunters’ ambush to last long.
"Ding!"
A crossbow arrow flew out from the darkness like a venomous snake, poised to strike Ged’s underarm!
Thanks to a golden magic shield, it shattered upon blocking the arrow, preventing it from piercing through the weak point of the armor.
Even though it was blocked, ferocious Ged broke out in cold sweat on his forehead.
If an arrow penetrated the armpit without magic potion, it would be almost incurable.
But the dangerous situation was still not over.
"Ged! Watch your footing!"
Geralt’s cat eyes swept across the arrowhead deflected by the [Quen Rune] on the ground, his pupils constricting, loudly warning.
Without thinking, Ged immediately pivoted on the toe of one foot, making a side turn to open up a step.
In the next moment, "Bang!" a loud explosion!
Like a giant firecracker exploding beside Ged’s feet, metal scraps were scratched against Ged’s leg armor, sparking.
That arrow was an explosive crossbow bolt!
As an alchemical product, it was not only effective but also significantly different in production cost compared to ordinary crossbow arrows.
In the Northern Army, you couldn’t expect to find such high-grade equipment in issued gear. Soldiers had to pay extra to buy these from the quartermaster.
But for the Niflgaard army, these were standard issued equipment.
"Crossbowman with special arrows!"
The leg Ged was affected by the explosion was temporarily a bit numb, and he immediately shouted towards Geralt.
"He must also have the signal arrow! Quickly, kill him!"
Geralt’s battlefield keenness was no less than Ged’s, even before the Bear School Demon Hunter shouted, he was already charging in a direction.
But in Ged’s wide-eyed view, he was shocked to find...
When Geralt faced a clumsy enemy, he hadn’t sliced cleanly into the weak spot of the enemy’s armor.
The sound of slicing into weak armor and smashing sword against it are different.
Geralt’s face also suddenly became grim.
He had hurriedly crossed swords with the enemy after warning Ged, then started advancing towards the crossbowman.
But now it seemed, that hasty sword clash...had misaligned the edge structure of his sword!
Simultaneously, a sharp, highly distinctive explosive sound burst out under the tense gazes of Geralt and Ged!
The signal arrow...they failed to intercept it.
