Chapter 45: Chapter 45: Provoke Callum
Without even asking the man to take off his mask, Callum already knew it was Cliff. He wondered why Cliff had suddenly approached him, even though they had never spoken to each other at important events. Was Cliff planning something that could ruin his and Edith’s relationship again? This time, Callum still wouldn’t give his girlfriend to an evil man. He kept holding her hand tightly so Cliff couldn’t take her.
"I didn’t expect you to attend this pointless dance party, Cliff. Usually you really avoid this event."
Cliff removed his mask for a moment. "Your eyes are surprisingly sharp. I admit you’re quite skilled at this." His gaze fell on the woman standing next to his enemy. He had already guessed she was his ex-fiancée without having to force the mask off.
"But why didn’t you invite a woman to accompany you today? Isn’t this a ball where all the guests are supposed to dance?"
"It’s more likely that my woman can’t accompany me for one reason. Without you asking the reason, you already know the answer."
"Couldn’t you ask Arabella to dance with you?"
Cliff burst out laughing, patting his stepsister firmly on the shoulder. "Callum, Arabella is your fiancée. There’s no way I’m going to steal her away." Cliff was actually getting impatient, wanting to forcefully remove Edith’s mask. "I’m actually curious. Who is that woman standing next to you? I see she’s a really good dancer."
"You don’t need to know. What’s certain is that Arabella isn’t my fiancée. If you want to take her, I won’t stop you!"
Cliff slowly moved his lips closer to his stepbrother’s ear. "Don’t think I’m stupid just because I made small talk earlier! I know the woman standing next to you right now is Edith."
Callum lifted the corners of his lips. "If you know, why are you still after her? Isn’t it already proven that Edith is my fiancée?"
"Has Edith told you the truth?"
"What do you mean?"
"The DNA test results should have come out. But Edith’s still hiding them from you. I’m sure she’s deliberately hiding them so you don’t get hurt."
"Don’t provoke her just because of your stupid assumptions! Edith will always be mine."
"We’ll see, will Edith side with me or will she side with you?" Cliff patted his half-brother on the shoulder, wiping the dust off his suit. "I told you five years ago, Edith can’t marry you Without you asking the reason, you already know the answer."
"If Edith marries you, I will never forgive you!"
Cliff’s gaze fell on the luxury watch on his left wrist. "It seems I’ve taken up enough of your time. I’ll be going now."
When Cliff was no longer visible, Callum breathed a sigh of relief, nearly collapsing. Luckily, Edith quickly hugged him.
Edith was also nervous about facing Cliff face-to-face. He had always shown a warm side, but it turned out he had a cruel side that frightened her. However, she wouldn’t act weak because she hadn’t done anything wrong. Instead, she began to think of ways to protect Callum and preserve their relationship.
"Callum..."
"I won’t let you marry that bastard. If he comes looking for you again, you’ll have to it to me."
"But, why didn’t you ask me?"
"Ask what?"
"Is it true that I’m hiding something from you?"
Instead of anger, a sweet smile now spread across his handsome face. "I won’t scold you."
Edith widened her eyes. "Really?"
"I know you can’t tell me because you’re confused and afraid of hurting my feelings. If I were you, I would do the same." He hugged his lover’s slender body tightly. "You don’t need to be afraid of me. If something happens to you, I won’t be angry with you."
"Callum..."
"Since there’s nothing more we can do here, I’m going home."
"But, before that, can I go to the toilet for a moment?"
"Then, I will accompany you."
Edith burst out laughing, holding her stomach. "If you stay with me, everyone will scold you."
Callum burst out laughing too, breaking the hug for a moment. "Okay, I’ll wait for you outside the restroom."
*****
Edith couldn’t wait to have fun with her lover at their home. Her heart was still fluttering with joy after hearing his declaration of love during his argument with the scheming women. She still couldn’t believe Callum already considered her his fiancée, even though he had never proposed. Had he really proposed before her accident?
Just after urinating in the toilet, she encounters a sly woman wearing a red dress with a slit at the thigh. She’s had enough fun with Callum, but now she has to face her enemy. Despite Arabella being Callum’s ex-fiancée, she doesn’t want to be seen as a slut.
"I didn’t expect to see you here," Arabella greeted while washing her hands.
"The last time we met was in Callum’s office. Callum often talks about you, actually. Your name is Arabella, right?" Edith replied with a beaming smile.
Arabella smiled sarcastically, wiping her hands with a tissue. "So, Callum talks about me a lot. He talks about you a lot, too. It seems like he really likes you."
"I hope Callum can choose the best woman for him."
"But how did you get to know him? Is your relationship really just that of designer and client?"
"You don’t need to interfere in that matter. Callum is definitely my best friend."
This time, Arabella no longer displayed her friendly demeanor. Her expression turned cruel, and her index finger pushed Edith’s body against the wall.
"I won’t forgive you if anything happens to Callum. The accident five years ago happened because of you!"
Edith furrowed her eyebrows. "What do you mean?"
"Callum stole you from Cliff because he only wanted to use you to satisfy his desires, while he ignored me. That’s why I still hate you to this day."
"I won’t believe your stupid words because Callum is a good man! He is also the only man who cares about me."
"Really? Haven’t you seen the other side?"
