Chapter 42: Only Repaying Kindness
A few days later, Arcane brought the lunch box that Kyle had given him. He had just cooked lunch and put it in the lunch box to return it.
He only made grilled sandwiches with chicken and salmon. He had intended to make something simple so it wouldn’t look too special. While he was cooking, Julian woke up from his sleep and, rubbing his eyes, walked to the kitchen.
His yellow eyes then fell on his husband, who was preparing a grilled sandwich in the box he had previously brought home.
He thought, ’It’s unusual for Arcane to make lunch. He usually buys it at the school cafeteria. Why did he suddenly change his mind today?’
Another thing she found strange was the lunch box. It wasn’t like the ones usually sold in supermarkets, which were disposable. This lunch box was meant for repeated use and could be washed and reused.
’Is he lying to me about the food he bought? But why would he lie about that?’ he thought again at that moment.
Noticing Julian’s presence, Arcane turned around while closing the lunchbox. "Do you need something? I thought you were still sleeping soundly like a hippo with your mouth open."
Arcane’s words were enough to make Julian frown. He didn’t think he slept with his mouth open, let alone as wide as a hippo’s. With that said, he was still feeling a bit sleepy, so he couldn’t think of anything to say in response.
"Sit down, today I only made grilled sandwiches for breakfast. Maybe today dinner I can make some warm soup because it’s been so cold lately." Arcane placed two plates on the table, one for himself and one for Julian.
Even so, his eyes were still fixed on the lunch box. Realizing this, Arcane immediately moved the box into a cupboard in the kitchen.
"There’s no need to keep staring at something that has nothing to do with you."
"But why? You don’t usually bring lunch." Julian looked protesting, just wanting to know the reason.
Not wanting to lie to him, Arcane finally told him the truth about the food Kyle had made last Sunday. He just didn’t want Julian to feel jealous or bad because he had accepted the food.
After finding out, Julian felt that it all made sense. No wonder Arcane didn’t throw the box away but washed it and kept it.
"Don’t worry, I’m not angry! I’m actually happy that he can be a good friend to you!" Julian replied.
"Really? You’re not jealous?"
He shook his head. He knew he couldn’t cook like Kyle did. That’s why he didn’t feel jealous at all because it was clear that his cooking would be very different from that man’s.
Arcane felt so relieved to know that, maybe he had been overreacting and worrying about hurting Julian’s feelings. But it turned out that Julian wasn’t that weak just because of a meal.
He then ruffled his husband’s hair, then sat down together and ate their breakfast.
At school, Arcane sat at his desk in the teacher room as usual and waited for Kyle to come and return the box.
"Today I will teach class 2C. Yesterday’s material was..." He opened his book. He looked at the material he had last taught in that class while waiting for the man sitting next to her to arrive.
Not long after, Kyle finally arrived and put his bag on the table. However, unlike usual, he ignored Arcane. Remembering that every time he arrived, he would always greet him.
But lately, he hadn’t been doing that because he was afraid of disturbing him. The misunderstanding was still spinning in his head, thinking that Arcane didn’t like his cooking.
"Good morning, Kyle." Arcane turned his head to greet him, then took his bag to take something out of it.
"Good morning, Arcane." He greeted him back and stood up from his seat before Arcane had a chance to give him the box.
He then walked away from the teacher’s room, leaving Arcane standing there staring at him in confusion, the lunch box in his hand.
"What’s wrong with him? He left so suddenly. Maybe he needed to go to the bathroom."
Arcane didn’t really care about that, but this happened all day long, with Kyle seemingly avoiding him.
"Kyle, I want to..."
"Sorry, Arcane. I’m in a hurry." Once again, he hurriedly left the teacher’s room at lunchtime.
The man realized that for the past few days, Kyle didn’t seem to want to talk to him. He didn’t understand why that was, but Arcane didn’t have much time to care about other people.
"Besides, why should I think about something like this? No matter how he behaves towards me, he’s not part of my mission to come to this school."
So he decided to put the box on Kyle’s desk and write a small note on it. He left the box there and left with his bag to go home.
Kyle, who had just arrived in the teachers’ room, peeked to see if Arcane was still there.
"I wish he already leave."
After confirming that the man was not there, he walked over to his desk and saw a lunch box on his desk as he was about to put down the books he had brought with him.
"This is the lunch box." As he was about to pick it up, Kyle was surprised to find several sandwiches inside.
He finally read the note that had been deliberately left behind.
Thank you for making me lunch. I really liked it because it tasted good. But you don’t need to bother making it for me anymore, because I prefer my husband’s cooking.
Arcane Romano
The short message left behind sounded like a small warning to Kyle not to make anything else for him. He appreciated it, but he didn’t need special treatment from him.
Even so, Kyle looked at the note differently and felt that Arcane must have felt shy if he cooked something for him. And that made him want to make food for Arcane again next time.
As he ate the sandwich, a smile returned to his face, his cheeks flushed. He felt happy and his heart was pounding.
Meanwhile, Arcane intended to go home and meet Julian. However, just as he was about to leave the school hallway, the principal approached him.
The smile on Arcane’s face faded slightly as he looked at the man who was none other than his own father, but he tried to maintain his composure in front of him.
"Do you need something, Mr. Stamford?" he asked.
"Yes. There’s something important I want to discuss with you. Can you come with me to my office?"
He nodded in agreement and followed Donald to the principal’s office. There, they sat facing each other, and Donald immediately said what he wanted to say.
At first, Arcane wondered if his cover had been blown or something. But luckily, that wasn’t what he wanted to talk about.
"You’ve been working at this school for almost a year now. And I’ve seen how well you perform. That’s why I want to ask you for a favor."
"What do you want me to do?" Arcane asked curiously.
Donald paused for a moment, then continued.
"I want you to be a private tutor for my son."
