Chapter 50: Appreciating What I Have Right Now
Upon arriving home, Arcane checked his watch and saw that it was already 8:15 p.m. He hadn’t expected to come home so late, but it wasn’t late enough for Julian to be asleep yet.
As soon as he opened the front door, he didn’t see Julian running towards him as usual. Walking into the house, he didn’t find Julian in the living room where they usually watched TV.
"Where is he? He can’t be asleep yet."
Continuing on, he stopped right in front of the kitchen door, where he found Julian sitting at the dining table, asleep, leaning against it.
As he approached, he saw a bowl of white tofu soup with fried squid on the table. It turned out that Julian had cooked dinner for him. Arcane glanced at the sink, and everything had been washed clean.
"He must be exhausted after cooking dinner and washing all the dishes. But I didn’t think he would do this," he muttered softly so as not to wake Julian.
His hand gently stroked his lover’s head, trying not to wake him up.
The red haired man picked up the bowl of tofu soup and saw that the tofu inside was completely mushy. Unlike what he usually made, the tofu should have been cubed.
He smiled, chuckling to himself, realizing that Julian probably didn’t know that cooking tofu for too long would make it mushy.
Arcane pulled out his chair slowly and enjoyed the dinner. Even though the dinner was cold and he had already eaten at his father’s house, Arcane didn’t want to waste Julian’s hard work.
In the middle of dinner, Julian woke up and found his husband had returned home. "You’re home? I thought you’d be home at 7:00."
"There was an extra hour because he has an exam tomorrow," he lied.
Seeing Arcane eating the food he had made, Julian asked if it tasted good to him. He was worried that the food he had made might not taste good to Arcane.
"I tried to make dinner for you. But the result looks like this. I can never cook properly," said Julian, explaining with embarrassment because she always depended on Arcane to cook.
However, the man finished the tofu soup in the bowl and also the fried squid that Julian had cooked for him. This showed that the food was fine and he could eat it.
"It might look really messy. But the taste is the same as the tofu soup I usually make. So you didn’t do anything wrong. You just need to learn a little more if you want to make it better," Arcane replied, placing his spoon on the table.
"You did very well. I’m proud of you, Julian." Arcane gently stroked his head with a smile.
Hearing the praise made Julian’s heart swell and feel so warm. His hard work trying to make dinner was not in vain. In fact, he was grateful that Julian was willing to try something he couldn’t do.
"Next time, don’t try something just for me. Try to do something for yourself. If you can cook, when you’re hungry, you don’t have to depend on me and you can make it yourself." He tried to advise him a little and leaned closer to Julian’s ear.
"But thank you for fighting for me," he whispered, making Julian’s face red because he was also happy.
"It’s okay! Besides, what I cooked was just something easy to make. Next time I’ll try cooking something else and you have to try it!" Julian felt excited when he thought about what he would try to cook.
Arcane’s gaze softened, he kissed Julian’s forehead and felt grateful to have him by his side. Remembering his father’s family, which might seem more perfect, but had something he never expected behind it, namely problems with his own wife.
However, with Julian, he felt much better and also perfect. He was very grateful for what he had now.
"So how was it when you taught at your father’s house? Did you learn anything new or anything else?" Julian asked curiously.
Arcane honestly told him everything about his father’s relationship with Alina’s two children. He also mentioned Alina’s attitude, which seemed to indicate that she did not like her own family.
Like himself, Julian also thought the same thing. Maybe Alina was set up with Donald. That’s why she didn’t like her family but was forced to have children to satisfy their families.
"Maybe your father was also promised to become the principal. That’s why he agreed to marry a woman named Alina!"
Julian said that because he often saw it in TV dramas or movies he watched. Arcane thought it made sense, even though they still couldn’t prove it.
"What is certain is that for now I have to avoid that woman when I go there. At least my intention is only to teach Stefano and earn money to pay off this house."
"Oh, about that!" Julian suddenly stood up and ran to his room. He came back carrying an envelope containing money and gave it to Arcane.
He said it was his first paycheck, which he wanted to give to help Arcane pay off the house.
"This is part of my first paycheck! Plus the savings you always give me, there’s about $7,000 in there! I want to help you pay off this house," he said.
Arcane’s green eyes fixed on the envelope, then pushed it back to Julian.
"No need. You don’t have to help pay off this house. You can keep that money as savings to buy something you want," Arcane replied.
At first, Julian felt a little disappointed that Arcane had refused his help. But the man explained that the house was in his name. So he was the one who had to pay it off. Even so, the house would still belong to both of them.
"Even though this house belongs to both of us, paying it off is my responsibility. It’s not that I don’t want to accept your help. But as the number one husband in this family, I am responsible for that. Do you understand?"
A smile returned to Julian’s face and he nodded his head. "I understand. But if you really need something, you can tell me! You don’t have to keep everything to yourself, because now you have me with you."
As he leaned in, Arcane gently touched the back of Julian’s neck, pulling him into a kiss. The warm kiss signified love and gratitude for his presence in his life.
"Yes. I know that, my husband."
