Chapter 116: "I wish I could forget"
Jimmy first browsed through a hundred memories in total, and quickly figured out that this was a very inefficient way to help this girl. He lost a third of his remaining mana already, simply because human brains were too complicated to tango with.
The worst thing was that he hadn’t even found any memories of her eating human flesh. He didn’t make any progress in erasing those memories at all.
This stressed him out beyond measure. The stench of his vomit that was painted inside his mask certainly served to stress him out as well. He was losing his focus quickly, and didn’t know what to do.
Desperate for an answer, he started thinking about the horrid diet that these kids had. A minute later, this gave him an idea that was in its nature, counter-intuitive, or out of the box.
"Hmm..." He muttered, "It might work."
Seconds later, he conditioned her brain to salivate. He tricked the brain to think that its host was hungry, and afterwards, as he browsed through her memories once more, he was pummeled by flash images, flash memories of the girl eating food. She salivated at the thought of food, and he used this opportunity to start erasing memories.
The inner parts of her brain started getting destroyed as he did so, but the changes were microscopic compared to the brain damage she already had.
This trick of his didn’t take much mana, he still had plenty to spare, so he started to believe that these kids had a chance. He was making great progress at erasing her memories, and in total, he erased seventy-six of them.
She was a kid, so she didn’t exactly have millions of memories of eating human flesh, so there weren’t a lot of memories to erase. He then erased her recent memories, hoping to erase her trauma, and from the looks of it, he believed that he already cured this girl.
Afterwards, he made her feel really tired. She fell asleep, and her brain started calming down. The illusions he had her experience went away as soon as she fell asleep.
"This one’s good, Zik, take her away from this damned blood bath." He said.
Zik could not be happier. He was so relieved, and so excited that he didn’t even wait a second after he heard Jimmy give him the green light. He walked forward, carried the girl in her arms, and started walking uphill.
Thankfully, the other three kids didn’t react when Zik took their friend away. They were still pretty much traumatized, and were crying near the flattened bodies of their parents.
Their cries were stressing Jimmy out beyond measure, but he had to stay focused. He had to heal all three of them, and if he didn’t stay focused, he could deplete his mana in less than a minute, and potentially kill one of these kids on the spot if he made any mistakes.
The three remaining kids were two little girls, and one boy. They were from ages four to ten, quite innocent, so he was looking to heal them as quickly as possible. He fought through his own tears, be it of relief, worry, or utter sadness, and put some work in to help the next kid.
Jimmy tapped into the heart of the youngest kid here, who was a four year old, dark-haired girl. He didn’t want to pick favourites, but he figured that four year old girls shouldn’t be exposed to such trauma. Ten year old boys shouldn’t be subject to it either, but he tried to be efficient. He also guessed that the youngest girl was also easier to heal.
He was wrong. This girl hadn’t had enough time to respond to the brain damage properly, so unlike the other girl he healed, she was missing a fourth of her brain, which was an even more severe case of brain damage!
This was concerning, but he applied the same method on her. It helped that she had fewer memories for him to erase.
Jimmy took ten minutes to heal her, and by that time, forty-percent of his total mana was gone because of all the brain damage he tried to reverse. He lost quite a bit of it on the four-year old girl, and at this point, he was hoping that the two other kids didn’t require as much help. He didn’t want to leave any one of them behind.
"God..." He sighed, "I wish I was stronger than this. I’m pushing my powers as hard as I fucking can, so why the hell aren’t they evolving? I could use a power evolution now more than ever."
Jimmy was stressed, but he kept going. He healed the two other kids by applying the same methods, and at the end, he was left with a virtually unusable, five-percent of mana. His mana was nearly depleted, but he thanked whatever god was listening that he managed to heal the two remaining kids before his mana depleted.
Jimmy wasn’t able to heal their brain damage completely, not even half of it, in fact all four kids still had plenty of brain damage, but he could always try to heal them later. The kids, as of now, were stable enough to be integrated in a relatively normal tribe. They weren’t a threat to the other kids in Jimmy’s tribe, and he made them as normal as he could.
The cries died down, and now, he could finally take his mask off. He took a deep breath, expecting to feel a sense of relief, but the smell of blood hit his nose like a truck! To his surprise, the mask he had on had worn up until now, protected him from the smell, at least to some degree.
Jimmy hurled again. He threw up all over the scene, and got disoriented.
Desperate to escape the stench, and the horrid scene of either flattened, or decapitated body parts, he started walking uphill, and tripped a few times as he got up there.
Gaark, his brother, rushed towards him, and lifted Jimmy, carrying him on his back.
"You’re sick, brother," Gaark said, "Do you need water?"
"I need to forget this day ever happened," He said. "But I don’t think anyone can help me with that."
"No, I don’t think so," Gaark agreed, but he barely understood what his brother meant.
He thought, ’Why would anyone try to forget things? That sounds stupid.’
