Death Notice-Book 3: Chapter 14: The Mission
“If we join your group, what do we need to give?” the young man who looked like a student asked through gritted teeth.
“Half of the mission rewards! Also, you must follow our arrangements. Otherwise, we won’t take you burdens along,” Yoshida Junko said flatly. “If you agree, sign the space contract with us now. After this, we won’t accept anyone joining midway!”
“If we sign the contract, will you protect us?” the strikingly beautiful girl asked hesitantly.
“Protect? Heh, in a world like this, no one can guarantee anyone’s safety, not even us!” Matthew said calmly.
“We will only give you necessary guidance to increase your chances of survival. Whether you live or die depends on your own efforts. Of course, if conditions permit, we will help. After all, if you die, we won’t get the mission rewards from the contract!”
“Dammit… half the mission rewards!” The student-like young man stuck his thumb in his mouth and bit his nail hard.
“I… I’ll go with you!” While others were still thinking, the young woman in the crowd, holding a baby girl tightly, was the first to agree.
“Sorry, our offer is only for them. You… are not included.” Matthew glanced at the baby in the young woman’s arms and spoke calmly.
“What?!” The black man’s words shocked everyone on the rooftop.
“Wh-why? I… I’m willing to pay all the mission rewards, all of them!” The young woman’s face changed dramatically. She bowed and pleaded desperately.
“Sorry!” Matthew sighed and shook his head regretfully.
“I’ll go with you!” The middle-aged fat man’s expression shifted several times before he finally made up his mind. He stepped toward Matthew and the other two.
“I… I’ll go with you too!” The provocatively dressed girl gritted her teeth and also stepped out from the crowd.
The middle-aged man in sanitation worker clothes had a complicated expression. He sighed and whispered to the young woman holding the baby girl, “I’m sorry, I have a son too. I can’t die here.”
After speaking, the middle-aged man seemed to have dropped a heavy burden and became the third to step out from the crowd.
“Only three people!” Matthew frowned and gave a faint smile to those remaining. “Then, good luck to you!”
“Please wait!” Seeing Matthew and the others turn to leave, the student-dressed young man called out to stop Matthew again.
“Changed your mind?”
“Could you… could you leave me a pistol? Just the most ordinary kind, consider it an investment!” The young man hesitated at first, but after a few words, he seemed to find confidence and spoke boldly. “After I complete the mission, I will pay twice the Credit Points for the pistol…”
“Hahaha! Matthew, I’ve found that entering a composite-type Quest World isn’t without benefits. At least we always meet some interesting rookies!” Jote couldn’t help but clutch his stomach laughing. “Kid, you’re too funny! I’d really like to see your expression before you die! Investment… hahaha!”
“Jote, say less. Let’s go quickly!” Matthew smiled wryly. Even the cold-faced Japanese woman gave the young man a strange look and shook her head.
Watching Matthew’s group retreating backs, the young man’s face turned red. He breathed out with difficulty, clenched his trembling hands, and muttered fiercely, “You will regret this, you definitely will!”
“Alright, those Veterans have left. It seems we should discuss what to do next!” Among those who remained, the blond young man in a suit spread his hands and said with a bitter smile, “Let me introduce myself first. I’m Jonathan, Jonathan Cabell!”
“My name is Lü Kuang. Don’t worry, everyone. Even without those three Veterans, we can complete the mission. No one understands this world better than I do!” The student-like young man slowly exhaled a breath of anger, clenched his fists as if encouraging himself, “They will definitely regret it!”
“I… am Liza. My daughter is Emi!” The blond young woman said somewhat helplessly, “Thank you for staying!”
“My name is Qin Lun, I’m a doctor.” Qin Lun smiled amiably.
He hadn’t wanted to stay. Going with those three Veterans would have made uncovering the mission plot much faster. Unfortunately, he didn’t even have a mission, so how could he have mission rewards? If he signed the contract, others would probably notice something was wrong immediately.
“Hill, a Catholic priest. May the Lord bless us!” Hill solemnly made the sign of the cross in front of him.
“…Lin Bin. My buddies call me Xiao Dao,” the fierce-looking young man rolled his eyes and said coldly, “More than names, I want to know why you stayed. Wouldn’t it be better to follow those three Veterans? You don’t have a baby to hold you back!”
“I couldn’t do it. Even if it costs me my life, I can’t stand by and do nothing! Besides, the Main Quest only requires escape. At worst, I’ll forgo the mission rewards and hide with them!” Jonathan looked at Liza and her daughter and gave a pained smile.
“…Me too.” Lü Kuang avoided eye contact, turned his head away, and muttered quietly, “But I don’t think we need to hide!”
“The Lord will not abandon any of His flock!” Hill smiled and nodded.
“I’m the same as everyone else. Plus, we have one more person than them. It’s too early to give up on the mission, don’t you think?” Qin Lun showed a charming smile, “And what about you, Xiao Dao? What do you think?”
“My fate can only be controlled by myself!” Xiao Dao’s fierce face twitched slightly, giving a reason completely different from the others.
“Thank you, thank you all!” Liza held her daughter and spoke gratefully.
“It seems, at least we are more united than those people. However, we still don’t know if everyone’s missions are the same. Maybe it’s better to understand each other a bit, what do you think?” Qin Lun’s eyes flickered, and he turned back to ask with a smile, “Also… Brother Lü Kuang, what did you mean when you said ‘you know this world very well’? Would you mind explaining it to us?”
“This… alright, after everyone shares their missions, I’ll explain to you all!” Lü Kuang hesitated briefly, then nodded in agreement.
Main Mission One: Survive for one week in the Phantom Demon World and accumulate three lowest-grade Phantom Demon Pearls. Mission reward: 1500 Credit Points. Mission failure: Erasure!
Main Mission Two: Join the Oni Clan faction and increase Faction Reputation to 1000 points. Mission reward: 3000 Credit Points, 6 Skill Points, 2 Free Attribute Points. Mission failure: At the end of the World Mission, deduct 10000 Credit Points. Those with insufficient Credit Points will be erased!
Side Mission One (C-grade, optional): Rescue Jacques Brown’s son, Henry Brown. Mission reward: Increase Oni Clan reputation by 2000 to Respect. Mission failure: No penalty!
Side Mission Two (C-grade, optional): Kill the female Phantom Demon Capidana. Mission reward: Increase Oni Clan reputation by 2000 to Respect. Mission failure: No penalty!
Side Mission Three (B-grade, optional): Kill the Phantom Demon Chief Scientist Guildenstern or Mori Ranmaru. Mission reward: Killing one increases Oni Clan reputation by 3000 to Respect. (Killing both increases Oni Clan reputation by 6000 to Revered. Mission failure: No penalty!)
Side Mission Four (A-grade, optional): Kill the Phantom Demon King Oda Nobunaga or Hashiba Hideyoshi. Mission reward: Either kill increases Oni Clan reputation by 10000 to Worship, and grants a random Bloodline Item from this world. (Killing both: original rewards unchanged, additional reward: random profession advancement item. Mission failure: No penalty!)
World Exploration Degree Mission: The two major factions in the Phantom Demon World contain numerous hidden Plot Missions. Completing each hidden Plot Mission grants World Exploration Degree rewards, which will be calculated upon returning to the space.
Hint: Each time a Reincarnator accepts a hidden Plot Mission, it will increase the World stay duration. Completing either Main Mission One or Main Mission Two is sufficient. Completing both grants additional rewards!
Hint: Side Missions One to Four can be completed selectively. Reputation rewards from missions will be obtained after mission completion and confirmation by your faction! Side Missions can be completed alongside Oni Warriors. Depending on the Oni Warriors’ level of participation, mission difficulty and rewards will be adjusted accordingly.
Hint: Extra Phantom Demon Pearls beyond those needed for Main Missions can be exchanged for Oni Clan reputation points. Faction Reputation points can be used to exchange for unique Oni Clan items in the dimension where the Demon-Breaking Mirror is located. Reputation point exchange does not affect already obtained reputation levels. The Demon-Breaking Mirror is only visible to Reincarnators.
After seeing the mission content submitted by the others, Qin Lun thought for a moment, and a trace of seriousness appeared in his eyes. Although he didn’t understand the difficulty of these Plot Missions, nor the specific value of Credit Points, one thing was certain.
The intelligence revealed by these missions contained a huge trap!
Should he tell them? Qin Lun looked up and met Hill’s gaze, seeing the Shepherd shake his head slightly.
“Don’t worry, everyone! I’m a hardcore player of the Oni Warrior game. I remember every step of the walkthrough. Those Veterans leaving is their loss. We can definitely complete all the Plot Missions!” Lü Kuang said proudly to the others, “Maybe we can even uncover many hidden plots!”
Probably no use to say it now! Watching the high-spirited Lü Kuang and the half-believing others, Qin Lun sighed and suppressed the thought in his heart.
“Lü Kuang, just from the names that appeared in the missions, can you be sure this is the world of Oni Warrior?” Xiao Dao asked with a dark expression.
“Of course! When we first woke up at the beginning, I took a quick look around the rooftop. Our view from this angle is blocked by the water tower and the tall building ahead. Go to the west side of the rooftop and take a look!” Lü Kuang said with a laugh.
Everyone followed his suggestion and moved to the west side of the building’s rooftop. Instantly, they all widened their eyes, staring at the towering giant iron structure in front of them. From this iconic building, they immediately knew which city they were in…
“This is both one of the two main scenes at the start of the mission plot and also the hometown of one of the main characters, Jacques Brown!” Lü Kuang pointed at the Eiffel Tower before them. “Welcome to the City of Fashion—Paris!”
