Capítulo 1340: Chapter 180: Enticement
Compared to chaos, Lu Li prefers order.
Order is the cornerstone that restrains chaos, a rule that both the weak and the strong must abide by.
Spirits adhere to order, their rituals can be seen as a unique order—if you follow their rituals, you will certainly be safe. Unlike other anomalies, chaotic and disordered.
Therefore, spirits are the first to establish a formidable reputation, yet they cause the least fear.
If humans had to choose which anomaly to encounter, most would prefer spirits.
Obviously, this “Beauty Lake Town” is shrouded in order.
“Because I am dead.”
Lu Li answered the law enforcer referred to by the waiter as “Blue Blood Chief.”
“No new souls have arrived in hell for twenty years.” The Blue Blood Chief was not interested in this: “Why are you here.”
“Because of this.”
Lu Li raised his left hand, revealing the reverse pentagram scar on the back of his hand.
The fiery gaze scrutinizing Lu Li from behind instantly disappeared, and the Blue Blood Chief stopped menacingly picking his teeth, muttering: “Mark of the Devil Monarch… seems you once angered those cunning guys.”
“Do you have a way to remove it?”
The Devil’s Daughter never mentioned making such a possibility unlikely, but Lu Li tried asking anyway.
The Blue Blood Chief looked down at him with pity: “If I were you, I would spend these few days enjoying the last of my time.”
Strictly speaking, it’s twenty-four days.
“I need a few maps,” Lu Li said.
The Blue Blood Chief wasn’t concerned with this soul’s last-ditch struggle, knowing he was brought by the demon’s mark to the whispers, its novelty already worn off, knocking on the table to remind the waiter to entertain the town’s new traveler, and left the tavern with heavy steps and avoiding glances.
The wind and sand were cut off outside as the door closed.
“What maps do you need?” The waiter stared at Lu Li apprehensively. Because only a body remained, because of the demon’s mark.
“Maps of the town’s surroundings, maps of this area, maps marking the town and lairs.”
“What can you pay?” Greed reappeared in the waiter’s eyes.
“Information from the surface.”
“No payment other than souls is accepted here.”
And Lu Li also didn’t want to pay his soul as compensation; he scanned the other demons in the tavern: “Is anyone interested in news from the human world?”
The silent tavern was filled only with the whimpering of the gale outside the street.
The black slime creature’s body beside a table suddenly swelled, bulging, and burped up bubbles.
Pop~
Silence continued.
Beauty Lake Town was just a small town that gradually declined after migration, with no guests, no powerful figures, no rich ones, and pathetically few local residents who didn’t care about stories from the surface, just as farmers didn’t care whether war was about to happen somewhere on the Main Affinity Continent.
Lu Li didn’t get discouraged; he waited quietly until he confirmed no demon was interested, then left his seat and walked outside.
Cling—cling—cling—
The sweet scent of a thriving soul vanished from the tavern as Lu Li left. Soon, a demon with something like a dorsal fin or membrane wings on its back, joints numerous like lumps, resembling a diseased bat, followed out of the tavern.
In the obscuring hot sandstorms, the Bat Demon retracted its membrane wings, crawling and following the shadow ahead,
its outline walked into an abandoned weathered building, folding its membrane wings, rushing into the dimly lit house, like crashing into a fisherman’s net, it crashed straight into a bizarre dream.
A left hand touched the dying Bat Demon, humanity turned into radiance and merged into Lu Li.
The halo disappeared from behind Lu Li, leaving only the Bat Monster’s body covered in lumps lying on the sand.
At this moment, a shadow slipped from the howling wind and sand on the street into the house.
“Private conflicts are forbidden in the town.” The Blue Blood Chief bared a hideous grin: “You violated—”
“I didn’t know the town’s rules.” Lu Li interrupted it.
“You knew.”
Lu Li looked at it calmly: “You never told me about these.”
“…You know now.” The Blue Blood Chief retreated into the sandstorm, whispering from the lines of shadow: “Do not let it happen again.”
Whether it discovered the trace and came or waited until Lu Li made a move didn’t matter, because it indeed adhered to and maintained order.
This was both a good and a bad thing—Lu Li could exchange trustworthy information in the town but couldn’t make the town his nourishment.
Lu Li squatted beside the Bat Demon, searching for rock fragments in the gravel.
The Bat Demon added 0.1 of humanity, roughly the weight of a few ghosts, but the cost performance was low… The Bat Demon was certainly not comparable to a few ghosts, and the Mid-Level Demon should have many souls.
Was it just short on souls?
Weathered fragments could be easily crushed by hand, so Lu Li gave up looking for shards, using the Dreamwalker briefly to cut open the Bat Demon’s skin, smearing some non-toxic dark blood on his skin, and then returned to the tavern.
Cling—cling—cling—
The opening tavern door drew the attention of the waiter and patrons. They saw a bloodstained, weakened, delicious soul pause at the door before hurriedly leaving, not even bothering to close the door.
The sandstorm poured into the tavern, its whimpering lasting a moment, and a slender outline left its seat, shutting the tavern door.
Shut from the outside.
In another weathered building not far from the abandoned Bat Monster’s house, Lu Li found himself blocked inside by a slender Claw Demon.
“You are violating the town’s rules.”
The sandstorm flooding into the abandoned house rose in height, Lu Li’s forehead nearly touching the uncollapsed rafters, retreating under the Claw Demon’s pressure.
“The Blue Blood Chief’s not here…”
Lu Li retreated as the Claw Demon approached, his back pressed against the weathered wall of the house, grains falling down.
“If you eat me, the curse of the Devil Monarch won’t spare you.” Lu Li said to the Claw Demon with nowhere to retreat.
“It can’t find a demon that sneaks a few bites.”
The Claw Demon closed in on Lu Li, then suddenly was engulfed by the expanding halo.
Thud—
The body of the Claw Demon was expelled from the receding dreamscape, Lu Li withdrew his hand.
Similar to the Bat Demon, it was still about 0.1 of humanity.
Meanwhile, an outline of shadow appeared outside the sandy door.
“I’m only defending myself.” Lu Li turned to the Blue Blood Chief, once again late: “It tried to eat me, but I ate back. Does the rule allow counterattacking when attacked?”
“Get out… of the town!”
The Blue Blood Chief roared at Lu Li, who had once again hunted a demon—it realized why a devil would mark this soul.
He was not an ordinary human.
“Did I violate the town’s regulations?” Lu Li questioned the Blue Blood Chief, continuing when it remained silent: “If I violated Beauty Lake Town’s rules, I will leave.”
Unwillingly, the Blue Blood Chief growled as it retreated, then stopped by Lu Li’s shout.
“Are you interested in these two bodies?”
The Claw Demon and the Bat Demon from next door. Hell’s resources were scarce, and bodies were evidently a resource as well.
The Blue Blood Chief leaned towards the Claw Demon, its face muscles tugging to expose its gums: “What do you want to know?”
“How to absorb souls.”
“Kill them.”
