Disciple of Immortal-Act 6: Chapter 19: Holy City Rupelm
Act 6: Chapter 19: Holy City Rupelm
After leaving the 《God's Arm》, we rode on Urzottle's back, heading toward the Holy City Rupelm to secure the 《Saint Staff》.
The scenery passed by swiftly as Urzottle flew at top speed.
「Over there…」
I murmured, gazing into the distance.
There was a fortress city in that direction.
The city exuded a solemn atmosphere, with numerous tall towers dominating the skyline.
Without a doubt, this was the Holy City Rupelm.
「… I hope the negotiation with Cardinal Wardell goes without a hitch.」
According to Sophia, Cardinal Wardell gave the impression of being a young, greedy, and reckless man, unworthy of his position.
She had mentioned that he would do any dirty job as long as he was paid, but whether things would proceed smoothly remained uncertain.
Even though Sophia herself said she couldn't come with us, it wouldn't have been a bad idea for her to lend us one of her merchant subordinates for negotiations.
The three of us parted ways with Urzottle near the city gates and entered the Holy City Rupelm together.
As we walked through the city, people dressed in dark, simple clothes stood out.
Statues, seemingly modeled after angels, were scattered throughout the area.
While the city wasn't devoid of people, its atmosphere was quiet and serene, complemented by a pleasant landscape.
「As expected of the holy site of the Jonas faith, the majority of the population are religious people.」
In addition to the 《Saint Staff》—which housed the soul of Jonas—being kept under this city's custody, the Holy City Rupelm was also the birthplace and final resting place of Jonas himself.
「Aren't our attire kind of… sticking out like a sore thumb?」
Pomera asked with an anxious expression.
「Don't worry about it… Just ignore them; they're just curious about us.」
I scanned our surroundings.
As we walked through the city, I couldn't shake the feeling that we were attracting strange, questioning gazes.
I hadn't had much time to research the city's culture beforehand.
「You lot… What's with those gaudy attire?」
A woman in armor suddenly called out to us.
She had long golden hair, wore silver armor, and draped a black cloak over her shoulders.
「Today is the anniversary of Jonas-sama's passing… It has been a long-standing tradition in Rupelm to wear modest mourning attire and gather in front of the Pope's place to offer prayers in the evening. And yet, the three of you appear in such colorful clothing.」
「M-My apologies, we're actually travelers…」
I bowed to her.
「It's good that you understand that much. Well, it's fortunate that you're travelers and unfamiliar with the situation. If you knew about this local festival and still intentionally wore such colorful attire, I would cut you down on the spot. You should buy proper garments in a store to cover those attires.」
「T-Thank you for the reminder, miss… Uhm, may I ask your name?」
「I'm Rizel, a templar. My main job is to watch out for outsider folks like you who bring corruption to this city.」
「W-Well, it's true that Pomera and the others lack proper etiquette regarding our attire on this day, but… there's no need to be so harsh about it!」
Pomera responded with pouted cheeks.
Rizel smirked, seemingly amused by her reaction.
「It’s always the outsiders who cause pointless trouble. Someone who has come here out of genuine faith would never forget the meaning of this day. You might be lighthearted tourists, greed-driven merchants, or perhaps thieves… whichever it may be, it’s deplorable. Don’t mock this day.」
「Excuse me? We are here on important bu—!」
Pomera stopped, her shoulders trembling uncontrollably.
「Ehehehe, we’re here for sightseeing.」
She pressed her head and revealed a bitter smile, as if recalling the true nature of our mission—to destroy the 《Saint Staff》.
Of the three options Rizel had mentioned, we were, unfortunately, the third.
「Disgusting fools. Make sure to watch your words and actions while in this land.」
I touched my chin, pondering for a while.
I was initially worried about where to entrust the letter from Sophia, but it might not be a problem if I handed it to a templar with a connection to Cardinal Wardell.
「… You're a templar, right? Do you have a connection with Cardinal Wardell?」
「Eh? Cardinal Wardell is the one who has authority over the army of Rupelm. As a knight, I have some degree of acquaintance with him, but he is busy today, or so I hear…」
「My apologies, but this is an urgent matter.」
I took out Sophia's letter from my pocket.
「Gold and red ornament, long-eared wax seal… Is this from Sophia Trading Company? So you guys are merchants. Cardinal Wardell has no time to meet lowlifes like you.」
Rizel spoke in amazement.
「Kanata-san… The treatment seems to be different from what we heard before.」
Pomera whispered anxiously into my ear.
Perhaps he's been hiding his true nature well from those beneath him.
Should I approach someone who has a closer relationship with him for direct contact?
However, no matter how much I think about it, every option seems to lead to trouble.
「We already know the location of the 《Saint Staff》, so why not just go in directly and strike? We can't afford to waste much time, and I think we can pull it off without revealing our faces.」
「Kanata-san!?」
Pomera raised her voice in shock.
「Please… Kanata… Philia also won't agree to do bad things.」
Philia tightly gripped the hem of my robe and, with tear-filled eyes, began to persuade me.
「Y-You're mistaken! But, we're in a completely bad situation! …Well, um, I just feel like showing our faces and going around can lead to trouble! We are talking about how we don’t know what’s going to happen if we waste our time loitering around, so it might be better to just act quickly and forcefully…」
I tried to explain desperately to Pomera and Philia.
Indeed, I understood that this was a troublesome item.
However, if it became known that we stole the staff, it would spark a great conflict.
In order to cleverly cover up that part and minimize the damage, the cooperation of church officials was essential.
「…Wait a minute. I think Cardinal Wardell once mentioned the Sophia Trading Company before. But if that's the case… No, perhaps I should it just to be safe.」
Rizel suddenly muttered those words while touching her chin.
「Rizel-san?」
「I don't want to entertain a merchant's messenger, but… just to be sure, I'll confirm this matter with Cardinal Wardell. Come to the cathedral. If Cardinal Wardell agrees to meet, I'll let you through.」
She told us to follow her.
Her expression was colored with disgust.
Though we weren't exactly welcomed in this city… it seemed I had managed to pass the first hurdle.
I wanted to avoid the hassle of looking for someone to contact Cardinal Wardell and showing letters around everywhere.
