When we arrived at 《Cocytus (Hell's Pit)》… The number of monsters had already increased compared to when we confirmed it using the 《Eye of Tiamat》 from the holy city of Rupelm.
The castle walls had been destroyed, and remnants of golems were scattered everywhere.
「Where's Veranta?」
I looked around to find Veranta from Urzottle's back.
「Over there, Kanata-san!」
I found Veranta's figure at the spot Pomera pointed at.
Veranta was leaping across the remnants of the rampart, battling a giant bird-like monster.
The bird was clad in flame armor, launching fireballs at Veranta.
Veranta wasn't backing down either, seizing opportunities to launch weapons created with 《Universal Alchemy》. However, the opponent seemed incredibly tough, and his attacks didn’t appear to be dealing much damage.
「That bird… it's a Phoenix. Its level is quite high, and even if its HP reaches zero, it regenerates as if nothing happened. A troublesome monster. This might be too much for him to handle.」
Lunaire, who was flying parallel to Urzottle, then raised her speed as she headed toward Veranta.
「GWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!」
The Phoenix opened its beak wide and let out a cry, threatening Lunaire as she fast approached.
Lunaire showed no sign of being intimidated as she closed the distance and deployed a magic circle.
「《Gravibomb》！」
A black light engulfed the Phoenix and contracted rapidly.
The Phoenix's body was compressed into a sphere, sending flames scattering in all directions.
Lunaire reached out her hand toward the Phoenix that was compressed into a sphere.
「《Death》」
A purple light spread out from the center of the Phoenix.
A shrill shriek echoed as the Phoenix let out its death throes. The crushed mass of its flesh turned into blackened sand and crumbled apart.
Veranta dropped his shoulders and heaved a sigh.
Then, he turned his gaze toward me who was riding on Urzottle.
「Kanata and co… You saved me. Sorry, but as you can see, I failed to protect 《Cocytus》. A terrifyingly strong demon attacked, blowing away both my defenses and the surrounding ground. There was no way I could even put up a fight. The best I can do is retreat and hide to avoid being caught in the destruction.」
Veranta spoke apologetically.
「A demon is attacking…」
If the opponent was around level 4000, Veranta wouldn’t say those words for sure.
We should assume that the opponent was level 5000 at minimum.
I couldn't believe that the 《Invisible Hand of God》 overlooked such a demon up until now.
Meaning that demon… Was another assassin sent by the higher being just like Luniman.
『Curse upon Locklore! I pray that the other two will bring about the destruction of this world…!』
Those were the last words of Luniman upon realizing his defeat.
There are likely a total of three assassins sent by the higher being.
「Right now, we are having our hands full dealing with the monsters overflowing from 《Cocytus》. Since we are in desperate need of combat power, we have requested reinforcements from mercenaries under the Sophia Trading Company and A-rank or higher adventurers from nearby cities.」
「I see… I understand the situation. However, 《Cocytus》 is vast, and it contains an overwhelming number of monsters. Given that our forces are already being exhausted, even if reinforcements continue to arrive, we will still be at a disadvantage…」
「Kanata, Lunaire… I have a request for the two of you. It is likely that the demon who went ahead has broken the seal of 《Cocytus》. That's why I need you two to pursue and eliminate that demon.」
「Lunaire-san and me?」
「Yes, the demon we’re dealing with is really strong and has extremely high-level on top of that. A half-hearted effort won’t even leave a scratch. Maintaining the frontline here is already hard enough, I’d like Pomera and Zorophilia to stay behind. Indeed, from what we've heard, we should be prepared for the possibility that the demon who plunged into 《Cocytus》 was even stronger than Jonas.
Pomera's spells might not even leave a scratch on that demon.
In that case, rather than forcing her to come along, it would be better to have her stay behind and defend the surface.
I stole a glance at Lunaire.
「Let's do this, Kanata. Most of the troublesome pieces in this world should already be taken care of. It seems like we're up against a rather high-level opponent, but even for higher beings, this must be one of their trump cards. The fact that a strong enemy has appeared now means that they're finally running out of options.」
「Understood. Lunaire and I will go down to defeat the demon that went into 《Cocytus》. Pomera and co, please handle the monsters on the surface.」
「Y-Yes! Pomera and co will do our very best, so Kanata and Lunaire should be very careful as well!」
「To think wE'd be reTurning to 《Cocytus》 at tHis point… Kanata, let's do this!」
Noble Mimic extended his tongue and roared with determination.
「Wouldn't it be better for Noble to stay on the surface?」
Lunaire murmured so while touching her chin.
「Eh! YoU JuSt WanT tO Be ALone WiTh KaNAta AgaIN!」
「No, our enemy this time seems to be far stronger than Noble, and Noble doesn’t have particularly useful long-range magic. Purely from a safety standpoint, I think it’s too dangerous. It would be more beneficial in terms of combat strength if you helped defeat the monsters on the surface.」
Lunaire shook her head as she explained the reason to Noble.
There was no trace of embarrassment on her face.
This was nothing more than a pure notice of being excluded from the battle.
Noble seemed to realize this as well, letting his tongue droop dejectedly and hanging his head down.
「P-please take care of things on the surface, Noble. It might take us some time to catch up with that demon. Having someone at level 3000 like you guarding the surface puts my mind at ease.」
