Chapter 77: Against Big Mama 2
The arrows rained.
Using the grappling rig to pull himself would not be possible. That was just aiming to die faster.
But that was not Soren’s plan. His plan was to dodge them. Yes, to do it in midair.
He felt it. It was fast, the first arrow entering into the sphere of his Blackfield.
This one came for his head. Eye level, easy to dodge.
He moved his head to the left. However, he sensed it. Just behind the arrow that he just dodged—at the left side—was a second arrow.
Impossible. Did the antibodies predict I’ll dodge that attack?
Still, Soren had inertia from when he lifted off the whale; he could still dodge this one.
Unfortunately, another. Two this time around, timed too perfectly.
Dodging was impossible.
Then again, he couldn’t dodge, which did not mean that he could not parry the attack.
He swung his dagger.
Dang!
The force shook his hand. It was as if his hand had just hit a metal wall.
The momentum of the arrow was just too much.
More.
More?
He waved his dagger again. Blocking two more before...
Shit
He was riddled with holes.
[You died]
.....
He woke up...
Well, that was the first try. Not that he expected much from it. Only that he wanted to see and feel the battlefield for himself.
Now that he had confirmed how the head of Big Mama was defended from the air, he needed to think of a way to overcome that defense.
Of course, there was already one brooding in his head.
He closed his eyes for a bit. As if to summon the courage to continue.
A wide, crazy smile formed at the edge of his lips.
I can’t believe I am actually going to do that.
..... Once again, the arrows came. However, instead of dodging, Soren tried something unheard of.
His legs moved as the first arrow passed.
Slacker’s eyes widened. "Is he trying to step on the flying arrows?"
Ratler shook his head. "He is dumb, but not that..."
But he was.
Because that was exactly what he was attempting.
Unfortunately, it did not go as he planned.
[You died]
...
Soren sat upright. He needed to review this crazy idea.
The plan was a simple one. If he was out of inertia when he was in midair between the whales, then he would use the arrows coming at him as literal stepping stones.
Two problems with this plan.
Problem one: The arrows were traveling too fast. What he was attempting was like trying to walk on a moving bullet—a near impossible feat, even for one enhanced by a shade.
Problem two: Even if he could step on these arrows, he would have to be very fast, as they were made of a kind of viscous liquid.
However, even in disadvantage, there was always a silver lining.
After all, for the viscous liquid to be fired and behave like arrows in midair, it meant that the molecules that formed their nature were very tight.
Soren grew up in a mechanics workshop. He was very familiar with the surface tension of liquids.
Surface tension: the assumption that the surface of any liquid body was covered by a thin film spread out across its body.
Surface tension was the reason certain lizards could even run on water.
Of course, they had to be very fast to do it.
While it was different from liquid to liquid depending on viscosity, it definitely existed.
Soren was trying to act like such creatures.
This was the reason for his crazy smile.
This was a task others would consider impossible.
But not him. The reason was because of the set of abilities he had.
Abilities he had acquired after Chronovore had devoured so much.
He already had an idea of the first one he was going to use.
And so he tried it...
The arrows came again. He focused hard, channeling his soul energy. His energy changed slightly. Just enough for no one below to notice.
However, he was now using Ivory’s Frog ability.
The power focused in his legs.
Ivory had incredible speed. Even thinking about how she moved now was scary.
With Ivory’s speed, it should be possible.
The muscles in his legs tightened.
NGHHHHH....
The sound it made seemed like it would tear his jumpsuit.
The kind of power his legs contained right now was deadly.
And just as Soren expected, it worked.
The first arrow reached the sphere of his Blackfield. And his powerful leg stepped on it.
Slacker watching below was speechless. "I’m..."
"impossible." Ratler finished his words.
At least it should have been, but right before their eyes, they could see it.
Soren had stepped on an arrow midair. Unfortunately, while he got the first, he missed the second.
[You died]
...
Soren sat upright.
"YES!!!" He screamed loudly, causing Cynthia, who had just woken up, to look at him weirdly.
But he could not hold back his joy.
This meant that it was possible to do this in midair.
But all he needed now was control.
After all, he was like a toddler that was learning how to walk.
It was going to take time.
Let’s try that again.
[You died.]
.....
Again
[You died.]
...
Again... (69 deaths later...)
He had finally understood how to do it.
And so he moved, from one arrow to another.
He ran in midair.
His legs moved like never before.
His Blackfield helped him sense the arrows the moment they entered his sphere of influence, and the shade ability he stole from Ivory helped him run on them.
Right now, anyone that saw this was speechless.
In this manner, dodging in the air, he finally made it to the body of Big Mama.
However, the moment his feet landed, he already knew this was going to be a different kind of hell.
After all, all around him were Antibodies. They were in their hundreds—like little giants ready to show he was a mere ant.
The first attack came from behind—a sickle that was launched for his head.
He tried to dodge.
But his legs.
They were too tired.
