Chapter 94: As Expected of a Sage
Just like every other time he had been “blessed” by a god, this was not what Rowe wanted.
And just like every other time, he could clearly feel himself getting stronger.
[The bright moon as your eyes and hands]
From now on, wherever moonlight shone, his field of vision would expand dramatically. With a thought, the light itself could be turned into a weapon and wielded freely.
The latter did not matter much to him. The former, though, had its uses.
Even with a primordial body and an inhuman physique, his eyesight had already surpassed reason. That did not mean there was no room for improvement.
Sharper vision meant finer perception.
And finer perception meant he could better trace the lines that led toward “death.”
Yes. The newest divine blessing was already being filed neatly into Rowe’s ongoing plan to seek his own end.
That said…
“Is this not a bit too casual?”
Rowe looked at the pleased Artemis and the slightly wide eyed Athena.
Athena truly was surprised.
She valued Rowe highly. That much was obvious. As a Virgin Goddess, she had been willing to share her glory with him. The Goddess of Wisdom loved those who possessed wisdom, and the Goddess of War was delighted by warriors who could lead battle to Victory.
Rowe had both. To call her regard “love” would not even be exaggeration.
But she had not expected Artemis, upon meeting him for the first time, to go that far.
Among the gods, the Moon Goddess had always been pure and aloof. Her blessing was supposed to be the hardest to obtain.
“Now he is also my proxy, Athena.”
Artemis spoke with undisguised satisfaction.
After a brief moment, Athena exhaled and recovered her composure.
“Hmph. I miscalculated.”
“Eh? The Goddess of Wisdom admits she was wrong?”
“The wiser one is, the more clearly one understands that nothing in this world can be calculated perfectly,” Athena said solemnly. “But Artemis, even among the gods, there is an order. I was the one who first bestowed my blessing upon Rowe.”
“I was there first, Artemis.”
“But you have not reached the finish line yet, Athena.” Artemis answered without shame. “I am also the goddess of competition. For me, as long as the race has not ended, the places can always be reversed.”
Hopeless.
They were starting again.
Rowe watched them silently as the two goddesses somehow slid back into another argument.
The spectacle was, in some ways, on a much grander scale than the quarrels between Enkidu and Ereshkigal.
“Ahahaha. As expected of the Sage, to provoke two main god level goddesses into fighting over him at the same time.”
At the voice in his ear, Rowe narrowed his eyes.
“Hermes, is that you? Did you not say you would block all harassing gods for me?”
“I did. But main gods are beyond my authority.”
The messenger of the gods appeared at his side, the bard like figure with ink blue hair floating effortlessly, his smile bright.
“Let alone stop them. Right now I do not even have the qualification to look directly at them.”
Athena and Artemis stood among the top of the Twelve Olympian Gods, second only to Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades. Together with Apollo, they could all compete for the title of strongest main god below the three rulers.
The difference between them and ordinary gods was a chasm.
Just as ordinary humans could not look directly at gods, ordinary gods, without permission, could not look directly at those two.
“Even if I force myself to look, all I see are two pillars of overwhelming divinity,” Hermes said, spreading his hands.
He did not need to point it out. Rowe already knew that the quarrel between the two goddesses was quickly pulling in the attention of half the Greek pantheon.
“Is that Her Highness Artemis, the Goddess of Moon and Competition, and Her Highness Athena, the Goddess of Wisdom and War?”
“They seem to be arguing… arguing about what? About… a person?”
“Is it that Sage of Uruk who fought Lord Ares, God of War?”
“To think he could make two virgin goddesses fight over him at once?”
The rustling voices reached both goddesses at the same time.
They stopped.
They turned.
Their gazes rose in unison.
“Why did they stop?”
“It looks like… they are looking this way?”
“That is impossible. We were only speaking by thought. How could Their Highnesses hear us?”
“Father Zeus above, please save us.”
Boom.
Moonlight fell like a hammer.
A white hand flicked lazily.
Gods in the sky, on land, and in the sea were gagged and beaten in an instant, flung about like rag dolls by divine power.
The entertainment of main gods.
Did they really think that was something they were allowed to watch?
Damn it.
The gods realized, almost at once, that they had been set up.
And the one who set them up…
“Lord Rowe is gone. Lord Rowe. My Lord Rowe!”
Looking at the spot where Rowe had been standing, Artemis let out a wail.
The Goddess of Wisdom also fell silent, her delicate brows drawing together, an odd sense of loss stirring in her chest.
Why could they not simply have held hands a little longer?
…No. What was she thinking?
This was simply the Goddess of Wisdom’s longing for wisdom.
That was all.
In any case, she had helped Rowe this time. If she were to ask him for help in the future, he should not refuse an opportunity for a private discussio—
No. That was not it either.
Athena drew a deep breath.
Before she left, she gave one final look to the Moon Goddess, who was still muttering to herself in frustration.
“Enjoy your obsession alone, Artemis. I am leaving.”
…
“Hahahaha. That is what you get for watching the show.”
Outside Arcadia, on the shoreline, Rowe looked up at the pathetic state of the gods in the sky, land, and sea, all knocked about and disheveled, and could not help laughing aloud.
He was genuinely amused.
“Hahahaha Lord Rowe, I did well, did I not?”
Hermes floated beside him, very obviously fishing for praise.
As the messenger of the gods, he was the courier between divinity and mankind, capable of both letting divine will descend and quietly intercepting it. For ordinary gods, at least.
And the ones who had been watching, by sheer coincidence, were all ordinary gods.
So, at Rowe’s request, he had loosened the restrictions and let those bored deities witness the argument between Athena and Artemis. At the same time, he let the two main goddesses clearly hear the peanut gallery commentary.
The entertainment of main gods was not for others to spy on.
A beating was practically a mercy.
Rowe took the chance to slip away.
He had come only to confirm Enkidu’s condition, after all. Since she was at a critical stage of transformation, it was better not to disturb her.
“It was acceptable.” Rowe smiled faintly. “The next time I have to hit you, I will go easier.”
Hermes: “…”
Was that something he was supposed to be grateful for?
He decided not to think too deeply about it.
“Sage of Uruk, I will take my leave first,” Hermes said. “If you ever need me, simply call my name. The wind will guide me to you.”
With that, he vanished once more.
In some regards, he really was a diligent man.
Rowe remained in place, deep in thought.
“You really are here.”
A clear voice sounded behind him.
The young huntress with long green hair strode forward, each long step drawing the eye. Her skirt swayed with her stride, slender hips shifting with unconscious confidence as she approached him.
“Sage Rowe of the legends of Uruk.”
Atalanta stopped and lifted her gaze, eyes bright and serious.
“I, Atalanta, in the name of a student of Saint Enkidu, challenge you.”
Rowe had expected her to find him. After all, he still held the bow and arrow that Enkidu had given her.
But hearing those particular words, he was silent for a beat.
Was she serious?
