Chapter 2040: Chapter 2040: Just Want to Sleep Like the Dead
Li Mingxi thought to herself, wondering if they could get Jim down the waterfall!
Xiao Lang had the same thought.
He deliberately retreated to the edge of the cliff, Jim still attacking fiercely. Xiao Lang suddenly jumped up, leaping over Jim’s head, his foot fiercely kicking him in the back!
Jim staggered forward, then plunged headfirst!
Li Mingxi cheered with delight: "We did it, we did it!"
She rushed over excitedly and hugged Xiao Lang tight, and Xiao Lang hugged her back tightly.
Suddenly, Li Mingxi saw Jim grab the vines on the cliff and leap up—
His face contorted, like a ferocious beast, he darted toward them!
"Watch out!" Li Mingxi reflexively pushed Xiao Lang hard!
Jim grabbed her instantly, hoisting her high up!
Xiao Lang turned around, his heart sank at the sight.
"Ah—" Jim roared, throwing Li Mingxi fiercely off the cliff!
"Mingxi!" Without thinking, Xiao Lang lunged downward, grabbing her in mid-air.
In the blink of an eye, the rushing waterfall swept them into the river, their bodies rapidly drifting with the current.
Jim vented his anger, but his mind cleared up as well.
He needed their lives to exchange for money!
"I’m furious!" Jim was even more enraged, preparing to go down the other side to find the pair. Suddenly, a bullet flew from behind and pierced his head!
He looked back in disbelief, but the darkness of the night made it impossible for him to see the attacker’s face.
Jim’s body fell, his eyes stubbornly wide open.
A few men approached, kicking his body to confirm he was truly dead before relaxing.
"We finally found them, but still a step too late," one of them said in frustration, looking at the river below the cliff.
"We better hurry down to find them. If the boss doesn’t find them, he’ll kill us!"
But to go down the waterfall, they had to detour, which would likely delay them for a long time before finding anyone.
*********
Li Mingxi and Xiao Lang were swept far downstream by the river.
When they fell from the cliff, Xiao Lang held her close, shielding her with his body, so Li Mingxi wasn’t injured.
She only briefly lost consciousness but soon regained it.
In the calmer part of the water, they stabilized themselves, Xiao Lang holding her chest, pulling her toward the shore.
Once ashore, they collapsed onto the grass, unable to walk any further.
The air constantly echoed with their rapid, exhausted breathing.
Xiao Lang gently held her body and asked with concern, "Are you hurt anywhere?"
"No, and you?" Li Mingxi responded.
The moonlight was decent here, allowing them to see each other’s face.
"I’m fine," Xiao Lang replied simply.
Li Mingxi leaned against his chest, murmuring, "I’m so tired, I want to sleep for a while."
"Sleep." Xiao Lang held her tight, Li Mingxi closed her eyes, quickly falling into deep sleep.
Xiao Lang couldn’t resist either and fell asleep after her.
At this moment, they had no concerns, just wanting to sleep as if dead; even if beasts came to devour them, they wouldn’t care.
Li Mingxi didn’t know how long she had been asleep.
She tiredly opened her eyes, finding it almost dawn.
Xiao Lang was sleeping beside her, his eyes tightly shut, his complexion very pale.
Li Mingxi furrowed her brows slightly, propped up her body, and reached out to touch his forehead.
So cold—
