Chapter 539: Chapter 265: The 3rd Missing Person_2
"Hello, Mr. Jiang, we’re here on behalf of Director Zheng to investigate the missing persons case, and we’d like to ask you some questions."
Jiang Yanbo appeared quite robust, seeming just over fifty.
But who would have thought he was already over sixty, his face full of interwoven wrinkles only added to his profound look.
"Ah, it’s you, come on in."
"Changjun mentioned it to me earlier."
As Jiang Yanbo ushered them inside, Luo Fei and his partner entered the house and were immediately enveloped by a strong scent of incense.
As Zhao Donglai nodded in agreement, Luo Fei cast a glance toward the adjoining bedroom.
His keen sense of smell allowed him to clearly pinpoint the source of the aroma, and what he saw shocked even him.
On a nearby altar were jade sculptures of Bodhisattvas, gilded statues of Buddha, wooden platforms for monks, and Arhat portraits. It was stunning, as if they had entered a temple’s prayer hall and incense pavilion.
Unexpectedly, this old mine manager was such a devout Buddhist, it was quite surprising.
Based on his understanding of a person’s appearance and demeanor, Luo Fei could initially gauge Jiang Yanbo’s character traits.
He was shrewd and ruthless, with years of experience sharpening his cunning wisdom.
This old man was anything but simple.
"What’s the situation? Have you found out anything about their disappearance?"
"Not yet. Preliminary investigations suggest they were abducted, but the perpetrators were extremely discreet, which indeed makes this difficult."
Hearing this, Jiang Yanbo let out an ’oh’.
"I see."
"It seems they’ve gotten themselves into quite some trouble. Hmph, I did tell them over the years to keep a low profile, but it seems they’ve aroused someone’s displeasure. They had it coming."
Listening to his resolute tone, Zhao Donglai chuckled wryly. Apparently, this old mine manager had already warned his subordinates.
This made his previous words seem a bit awkward.
"Comrade, such matters are surely their own doing."
"A decade ago, they were reckless with me, and otherwise, they wouldn’t have such good positions today—a staffer and a team leader holding power..."
"Sigh, really hard to comment on."
Zhao Donglai and Luo Fei exchanged a glance, understanding that the old mine manager had no useful information to offer.
"Sir, there’s another thing we want to ask you."
"Was there any case or incident in the mine back then involving Feng Jianyi and Liang Lei, or perhaps involving others? This is very important to us."
Jiang Yanbo mumbled at their question.
"Case? Incident?"
"Yes, there was once a major incident when the mine shaft water leakage and collapse buried two tunnels."
"But fortunately, it was at the finishing stage, so there were no casualties inside the tunnel."
Upon hearing this, Luo Fei and Zhao Donglai’s expressions instantly turned grave.
Burying two tunnels! This was certainly not a small case.
A water leakage collapse should be regarded as a safety accident, and responsibility should rightly fall on the head of the team leader and staffer.
Because they directly participated in the core management jobs on the mine, even more so than the mine manager and project manager.
Wait a minute...
Staffer? Team leader?
Aren’t these the positions Liang Deng and Feng Jianyi held at Wenshan Six Mine? Could there be a connection here?
Zhao Donglai motioned for Jiang Yanbo to continue, as this lead seemed valuable.
But what Jiang Yanbo said next only left Luo Fei and his partner even more puzzled.
"The incident created a big stir at the time; simultaneously, eight miners fled due to work mistakes, leaving no clues, and they haven’t been heard of since."
"Fled?"
At these words, Luo Fei and his partner were perplexed, as Zhao Donglai quickly asked what exactly happened and how the miners fled.
"These eight individuals were responsible for the development and excavation work of the mine shafts. Since the monitoring s below were recorded and screened by them, due to failure to on time to the mining area, significant losses were caused, and they all chose to escape after the incident."
It was unexpected to learn that something of this nature had occurred back then.
While Wenshan Six Mine wasn’t very famous here, it was known as a rich mine in the outskirts, with many workers yearning to join the workforce there.
If an accident occurred at such a place, the loss would indeed be substantial.
"Wasn’t it a bit outdated to rely on manpower for monitoring and inspection?"
"It was ten years ago. At that time, to detect any water leakage or seepage, onsite inspections and patrols were required, with miners carrying lamps walking around both inside and out, at least three checks a day."
"I see."
Luo Fei suddenly thought of something.
"Then, after these eight fled, was there any other responsibility pursued?"
"Yes indeed."
Jiang Yanbo shook his head helplessly, waving his hand.
"Unfortunately, those being held accountable were Feng Jianyi and Liang Deng, who had just assumed the roles of team leader and staffer. They were primarily responsible for the work allocation and personnel scheduling at the time, so in the absence of accountability, they had to bear the consequences."
The outcome was unexpected.
However, as criminal investigators, Luo Fei and Zhao Donglai were even more puzzled.
If this was the case, why would these two individuals, already blamed and punished back then, unexpectedly disappear now?
Where have they gone? Who exactly took them away?
"Alright, we’ve gathered enough information for now. If anything else comes to mind later, please contact us. We won’t disturb you any further today."
Luo Fei stood up, signaling to leave, and Zhao Donglai also saw no further reason to stay, so they bid farewell and left.
Just as they walked out the door, the phone rang.
It was Zheng Changjun calling.
"Director Zheng, what’s happened?"
"Another person has gone missing. Their family has already ed it. Something’s not right. Please come back."
"Alright!"
Hearing the situation, Luo Fei and Zhao Donglai dared not delay, rushing back quickly.
Back at the bureau, Zheng Changjun was already waiting in their office.
"Another person has disappeared, leaving no trace again. As soon as the family discovered it, they ed the case immediately."
Seeing his serious expression, Zhao Donglai blurted out.
"Is it someone from Wenshan Six Mine again?"
"Yes."
Zheng Changjun sighed deeply.
"This time, it’s Sun Bo, the project manager from Wenshan Six Mine. His main duty was liaison for external mineral procurement orders. He was the direct superior of Liang Deng and Feng Jianyi, and all three were part of the same batch of employees. He disappeared at noon today."
With those words, the three fell into silence.
Luo Fei suddenly turned to Zheng Changjun, speaking with unprecedented seriousness.
"Director, ten years ago Wenshan Six Mine experienced a water leakage collapse accident, did you know?"
With a grim expression, previously silent, Zheng Changjun raised his head alertly at Luo Fei’s sudden inquiry.
As he looked at him, there was a glint of realization in his eyes.
If anyone else had asked him this, he would have been surprised, but given his understanding of Luo Fei’s capabilities, it wasn’t bewildering.
"Yes, I’m aware."
"You are aware?"
Zhao Donglai was taken aback.
The incident back then, though without casualties, involved fugitive issues.
Why wasn’t it ed or promptly handled back then? Could it be the director was involved?
"Yes, that’s why I specifically tasked you to investigate this case. At the time, I was still in the criminal investigation unit, not yet the director, and was merely assigned this case."
Before he finished, Luo Fei interjected.
"Claiming personnel fled, but eight disappeared after the accident, you have another perspective, don’t you, Director Zheng?"
"Yes."
Zheng Changjun nodded.
"You’re correct, I suspect they all died!"
