Episode 20 – Backstab Crisis (1)
As soon as Lee Gyeongbok pressed start, a cutscene began to play.
It was the latter part of the trailer, the scene where John tried to shake off Jessica.
"Jessica? I need to find Sandra...."
But John didn't get to finish his sentence. The wall opened up with a rumbling vibration.
- Oh lol it starts right away
- What's he so surprised about!
- In.stant.check
The viewers made no attempt to hide their curiosity.
"What is this...?"
Quickly, the cutscene showed the wall.
Inside, test tubes large enough to hold a person were lined up in neat rows.
And inside them were people—or rather, things that had once been people.
- Ha... I knew something was fishy.
- Corpses in the lab, it's a given.
- Expected this much lol
Corpses submerged in semi-transparent green culture fluid. The viewers weren't particularly shocked.
In the zombie genre, this scene was practically a cliché.
But then, as the camera zoomed in, a more detailed look inside was given.
- What the?
- Don't tell me those are alive?
- Ugh, this feels different...
Hearts, livers, lungs, even limbs and eyeballs—organs of every kind.
Although the corpses were decayed, certain organs strangely looked as if they were still alive and full of vitality.
"You're not the only test subject for Elixir,"
Jessica said.
John turned his head at Jessica's words.
"Not just anyone can accept Elixir. Specific factors are required. These people possessed the right factors but... they became contaminated partway through, so all they attained was an incomplete immortality."
"Suitable factors...?"
"Yes. But their sacrifice was not in vain. Using the data, regenfarm improved Elixir. Still, more testing was needed to confirm the results."
Jessica spoke calmly, her face showing no change in expression.
"On a large scale, at that."
"Are you saying all of this was Regenfarm's experiment?"
"That's right. Regenfarm mixed Elixir into regular drugs and distributed them everywhere. From hospitals to people who bought fever medicine or cold medicine—everyone was exposed to Elixir."
- Wow;;; got chills.
- Jessica saying all that so casually is even more chilling
- 〈Message deleted by moderation bot. (1st warning)〉
- Ha... I loved you, fu...!
- Jessica Squad, your heads just got smashed, right?
The viewers now had an intuitive sense that Jessica was not an internal whistleblower.
Rather, she seemed better suited to Regenfarm—clearly cast as the villain.
"Test subjects who became hosts for Elixir instinctively crave the blood of other living things. They're looking for the right factors within."
Jessica turned, a faint smile on her lips.
"That's all that was on the USB. But there's still more you need to know."
John frowned and backed away from Jessica.
"... No, I don't want to hear anymore. I have to go find Sandra."
"This also concerns her."
He came to a sudden stop as he turned away. Jessica's smile deepened.
"You two have slept together, haven't you?"
"... Pardon?"
"From a biological perspective, conceiving a child is about exchanging DNA. It's an act meant to make the next generation better than the one before."
She adjusted her glasses and continued.
"In other words, the Elixir in your body has already been passed on to Sandra."
"What does that—?!"
"John, you'll be fine. But Sandra? Are you sure she has the right factors?"
John's eyes trembled violently at the question.
"Ha, that's a bit overwhelming," said Lee Gyeongbok, and the viewers appeared to feel the same way.
- Even the bed scene was a setup, holy...
- If there's no vaccine Sandra could become a zombie too.
- Scenario writer? We want to send you a gift, just tell us your address^^?
- Viewers watching with blood pouring from the backs of their heads lol, starting with me
- Why! Why can't John and Sandra just be happy!
- What is going on here!
- Such an old meme lolllll
- Didn't love you fu...!
As the chat fell into shock, jessica continued speaking.
"The vaccine—the only place that can extract your suitable factor is here. John, think carefully."
"Sandra..."
John's fists clenched and trembled. A complicated expression crossed his face, but he soon hung his head.
"Alright...."
"Good decision. First, let's draw a blood sample."
Jessica beamed as she approached with a syringe.
- Boiled sweet potato at the last minute, what is this!
- Soda, we need some damn strong soda here...
- This is abalone soup! Donghwangcha~!
- Ugh? This story sucks?
Viewers expressed strong distaste. But then—
"John!"
A shout, followed by a barrage of gunshots. At the same time, jessica collapsed, bleeding.
John turned his shocked eyes. Standing there, gasping for breath, was Sandra.
"Ha, so this is why you like Sandra."
- Sandra punch! Sandra punch! Sandra punch!
- Ah lol, my man is protected by me!
- Damn lol, perfect timing
- Open up! Time for some carbonated justice!
- Sob, I'll never forget the soda Sandra gave us...
Lee Gyeongbok's elation coincided with praise filling the chat.
"Sandra?"
"I'll explain on the way! This way!"
John looked back at Jessica, collapsed on the floor. Her white lab coat soaked up more and more blood.
With a worried expression, he followed Sandra.
She led him deep into the laboratory. When she pressed a button on the wall, an elevator appeared.
"What's this?"
"It's an elevator directly connected to the director's office."
It had a reason to keep running even during a lockdown. Sandra quickly pressed the button as she explained the situation.
"The entrance was blocked, so I found this while searching desperately for a way up."
"Sandra...."
John looked at her, overcome with emotion. The viewers felt the same.
- This is true love
- Mmm, it's so juicy.
- Sandra is trending! Hitting the upper limit every day!
- There are two heroines in Bark? What does that mean?
- For real lol, sandra's the only real heroine, right?
Soon the cutscene shifted.
The view took on a grayish tint—it looked like Sandra's recollection.
As soon as she arrived at the director's office, she realized she was in the wrong place and tried to turn back.
"I saw a photo of the director."
A photo hanging in the director's office.
A middle-aged woman stood with a stern expression.
"The face looked familiar. So I thought about it...."
The screen shifted.
It was when Jessica opened her pendant to hand over a USB. Sandra, standing behind warily, was able to glimpse inside the pendant.
The director's photo was inside Jessica's pendant.
- Jessica's doomed!
- She's the director's daughter?
- Then why did she blow the whistle?
- It was a rickroll all along lol
- Serves her right! Ptooey!
It seemed Sandra drew the same conclusion as the viewers. She immediately used the communications equipment to contact the military.
"I told them there was evidence and asked for a helicopter. Then I came right down... the rest you know."
"Sandra, thank you. But...."
John tried to explain what he'd heard from Jessica. But there was no time.
The elevator window rattled, followed by the sound of helicopter blades.
- Oh lol, they're here already?
- The soldiers finally showing some use.
- Is this the ending?
The viewers, of course, thought it was the military's helicopter. But Lee Gyeongbok knew better.
'There's no way the final chapter ends so easily.'
The sense of foreboding he felt below soon became reality.
Visible out the window was not a military chopper, but one bearing the Regenfarm emblem.
And it was armed with a machine gun.
"Get down!"
John hurriedly grabbed Sandra and rolled to the floor. The glass shattered as bullets rained in.
At that moment, the elevator lurched to a halt.
"Ugh!"
"Damn it!"
John and Sandra were not about to sit and take it. The two immediately returned fire, making the helicopter veer away.
- Insane...!
- First it was an armored car, now an attack helicopter lol
- What kind of escort force is this!
- The mercenaries aren't even trying to hide anymore
As the viewers raged, the cutscene ended. Regaining control, Lee Gyeongbok grabbed his handgun.
"The situation's a bit unfavorable right now."
- How do you take out a helicopter with only a handgun and shotgun wtf
- Plus the wind's blowing hard too.
- This is seriously tough
- Is there a rocket launcher in this scenario?
- Lol I think that's it
- If there is one, you could end it in one shot
['CapCompany_kor' has donated '10,000' won.]
[Yes, that's correct. From here on, all progression assumes you have the rocket launcher.]
It turned out some viewers' guesses were right, as the developer themselves donated.
- But there isn't one, right?
- Lol, that's the dev's fault!
- Who handled the level design?
- Honestly, even Purple would protest this.
- The staff are crying! That's another apology letter!
- Lol, go easy on them.
- You really believed that? Viewer-kick!
But the viewers didn't take the developer's side. Lee Gyeongbok checked the chat's mood and quickly continued.
"There really is a reason you'd need a rocket launcher. This'll be tough."
Although he'd already fulfilled all his contractual broadcast time, nothing was certain yet.
As his words distracted the viewers, the topic shifted.
- If even Purple is saying that...
- Man, is this impossible after all.
- Gotta load Chapter 4 and get a rocket launcher.
- Retry? The increased stream time is actually a bonus.
Lee Gyeongbok smiled faintly as he read the chat. He wasn't finished speaking yet.
"So everyone, make sure you pick up a rocket launcher."
With those words, the helicopter circled around to reappear over the building.
As if waiting for it, he took aim at the cockpit with his pistol. Without hesitation, he pulled the trigger.
With a crack, the cockpit window split.
"Close one."
Unfortunately, the pilot survived.
- What was that?
- Wait;;; did he really hit that?
- How do you make that shot with the wind blowing like that lol
- ???: Hey, that's bulletproof glass!
- We'll let you live just this once?
- Taking down a helicopter with a pistol?
The viewers were both surprised and excited by the skillful shooting.
Lee Gyeongbok didn't want to disappoint those expectations.
"Let's take out the gunner first."
He declared and immediately aimed at the machine gunner on the side. Before the gunner could aim, Lee Gyeongbok fired.
A single gunshot dropped the gunner.
- Gunner down!
- Tango down! Tango down!
- Now this just feels natural lol
- Pilot: Hey! Is this really a game?!
As if it was the most obvious thing, Lee Gyeongbok turned his sights. His target now was the helicopter's fuel tank.
Frowning slightly, he squeezed the trigger. With a crackle, a spark ignited, and flames erupted, shaking the elevator with an explosion.
- It blew up?
- Helicopter explodes from a pistol shot lol
- Steven Seagal would be jealous lol
- ???: I guess a rocket launcher is needed. (Not really)
- That's for normal people to use
- Another 'perfect' run...
Lee Gyeongbok grinned, but soon turned his gaze.
'It's not cutting to a cutscene.'
Meaning there was still something left to do—and he knew exactly what.
"Sandra!"
The place itself radiated danger. The elevator would surely crash any minute now.
He quickly helped Sandra up and opened the ceiling hatch.
- Looks like it's gonna fall soon
- Soon... what?
- Guys, stop catching onto that! Lol
- Insane decision-making and action speed.
- If it were me, I'd have asked Sandra lol
- Waaah! I'm just a baby viewer, leave everything to Sandra!
As the viewers relaxed and joked around, Lee Gyeongbok and Sandra climbed on top of the elevator.
He grabbed the cable and looked back at Sandra.
"Get on."
"Ah, okay!"
Sandra hesitated for a moment, but soon obeyed. As she did, control disappeared and a cutscene resumed.
With a thunderous noise, the elevator plummeted. The car vanished in an instant, falling into the darkness below.
- Whoa holy...
- A little slower, and that would've been bad...
- Why didn't Sandra move right away?
- She was worried she might be heavy~
- For real lol, caring about her weight is real right?
- Lol, that kind of detail is there, too
As if proving the viewers' points, sandra whispered into John's ear.
"Thank you."
"I'm glad we weren't too late."
"... I'm not heavy, am I?"
"Not at all."
At that reply, sandra pressed closer to John's back. As John climbed the cable, the screen faded to black.
- This is real love lol
- How do you people know that? Weren't we all single?
- Lol, once again only I was serious.
- Ban reason) Being a normie
- Typical normie: steals everything from the outcasts
The chat was rowdy for a bit, but as the cutscene resumed, everyone refocused.
They arrived at the director's office.
'Huh?'
But control was immediately returned.
"The stairs to the roof are this way,"
Sandra urged.
But Lee Gyeongbok didn't immediately follow.
"Looks like there's something we need to find."
As he whispered, the viewers agreed.
- Maybe there's something behind the director's photo?
- Should we contact the military again?
- First, let's search the computer.
- Maybe there's a hidden item?
Lee Gyeongbok had similar thoughts.
He gave the office a quick search, then turned to the computer.
"It's password protected."
Suddenly, a word came to mind.
[Elixir]
Elixir.
Wasn't that what Regenfarm was ultimately pursuing? He pressed enter, and the screen changed.
- Oh lol
- Maybe there's some dirty Regenfarm secret?
- It could be something about the director and Jessica.
- Hurry up and check!
He scanned the desktop quickly. There were many folders and files, but—
"Ah, all these files are encrypted. Can't open them with 'Elixir.'"
Unfortunately, there was nothing to open. But some files weren't encrypted.
"Let's try this one."
A folder labeled 'CCTV' and a video file inside.
When Lee Gyeongbok played the file, the view turned into a cutscene.
- Huh?
- Oh lol, looks like he found it.
- That's the director's office CCTV.
The door to the director's office—not the elevator—opened, and someone rushed in, looking around nervously before running to the communications equipment.
〈This is it. If I plug the USB in here...〉
Muttering to himself, he plugged in the USB.
- Wait...
- Hang on, is this...
- What the hell?
Some viewers typed in the chat as if they recognized the video. Lee Gyeongbok decided to watch the entire cutscene.
On video, the man used the communications gear to call for military rescue.
〈Thank you for your cooperation. We will be sending troops shortly, please stand by.〉
〈Thank you.〉
After the transmission, perhaps relieved, the man slumped on the sofa.
〈At last, I can finally get out of here...〉
At that line, the chat sped up.
- Wait... isn't this the old route ending?
- Why is this showing up?
- Shit... this is getting creepy.
Several viewers were ing that they were watching the ending scene of the previous route, but from the perspective of the CCTV.
But the video didn't end there.
The man's body slumped to the side and stopped moving. Soon after, the elevator opened and mercenaries wearing gas masks came in.
Behind them was Jessica, also wearing a gas mask.
〈Clear.〉
〈Test subject secured.〉
With practiced motions, the mercenaries grabbed the man. Jessica then pulled out the USB and spoke.
〈Transfer the test subject and switch back to the external network.〉
Those words were all the viewers needed to understand the situation.
- That's insane lol
- Shit, that really is the original route protagonist
- They connected the stories like this?
- Plugging in the USB switches to the internal network?
For gamers who had played the original Bio Crisis, it was the ending they'd seen.
The "happy ending" of a successful escape was actually—
- Lol, it wasn't the army, it was mercenaries
- Tada! It was Jessica's rickroll all along!
- Wow... in the original route you become a test subject?
- Look at all those baboons clutching the backs of their heads, lol!
He was captured as a test subject—a bad ending.
