Chapter 99: Chapter 99: Settlement
Mu Qing stood up from the ground and said, "There’s a sewer exit about ten minutes ahead. I was caught there."
"Hmm."
Su Changxing nodded, lifted his knife, and moved forward, saying, "Let’s go, we should leave here now. Someone might come at any moment."
Mu Qing glanced at the torch on the ground and said, "Aren’t we going to use the light?"
Su Changxing shook his head and said, "No need."
Mu Qing thought for a moment and said, "You really have a lot of superpowers, even night vision."
Su Changxing paused and said, "What if my eyesight’s just particularly good?"
With his night vision ability enhanced once more, he could now move freely in the sewers without a torch.
Watching Su Changxing disappear into the darkness, Mu Qing still picked up the torch from the ground and followed, saying, "I’ll keep the torch; my eyesight’s not great."
They didn’t encounter any more survivors, proceeding in silence, an oppressive atmosphere lingering. After more than ten minutes, they finally saw weak beams of light appearing near the wall ahead.
Mu Qing, a bit excited, said, "This is the place. Those two survivors crawled down from here."
"I’ll go up and take a look first."
Su Changxing climbed up the damp stairs. As he approached the manhole cover, he vaguely heard familiar roars, though they were distant, indicating there probably weren’t any zombies nearby.
He pushed aside the heavy manhole cover, emerged from the sewer, sat on the ground, and looked up at the sky. The night was fading, the horizon turning white with crack-like streaks of faint yellow light.
Chenxi was about to break through the darkness.
Su Changxing wiped his hair, feeling a sense of survival after a calamity, and called down, "Mu Qing, come up."
Before long, Mu Qing crawled up as well, staring at the outside scene in a daze.
Su Changxing glanced at her and asked, "What’s wrong?"
Mu Qing paused for a moment before saying, "It’s more desolate than I imagined, this is essentially a dead city."
Su Changxing thought for a moment and said, "It was always a dead city... if we hadn’t come."
He surveyed the surroundings, contemplated briefly, and roughly determined that they were currently in the opposite direction of Shield Company’s previous location.
The area near the sewer entrance had already been cleared, with no zombies in sight. Su Changxing led Mu Qing westward.
Having received a message from Huang Biao earlier, they had likely moved southwest, so Su Changxing planned to head in that direction to meet them. It’s much better to have somewhat familiar and trusted people looking after each other in the apocalypse.
Mu Qing could also be brought along; she wasn’t completely incapable of combat, just relatively weaker. However, considering her superpowers, she could actually outmatch ordinary people and had great potential.
If she received a few rounds of attribute enhancement, her fighting ability would dramatically increase.
"These zombies’ life force is truly terrifying, much stronger than ordinary humans."
Mu Qing panted heavily, struggling to kill a zombie with a weapon, covering herself in blackened blood.
Su Changxing looked at the zombie lying on the ground, its flesh mangled, and said, "They’re quite similar to you, only dying when their vital points are hit, although their only vital point is the head."
Mu Qing squeezed the axe in her hand, hesitated, and said, "Is that even comparable?"
Su Changxing nodded, seriously saying, "In a way, it is."
Mu Qing: "······"
In the early morning, the two of them drank some water and ate something beside a dilapidated car.
Mu Qing leaned against the car door, munching on a biscuit, and said, "To someone like you, the apocalypse feels like a picnic... feels a bit ridiculous."
Su Changxing took a bite of a yellow peach and said, "For some, it’s just an escape game."
Mu Qing checked her phone, her expression shifting slightly, and said, "According to my information, the officials are setting up a gathering site nearby. I’ll be heading there soon; someone will pick me up... Do you want to come to the gathering site? At least it’s safe there, though it’s not fully constructed yet."
Su Changxing was a bit surprised, not expecting someone to come for Mu Qing so soon. He thought for a moment and said:
"I won’t go for now; I have some things to handle. Maybe later, and even the official organizations are struggling now."
For the moment, he had no intentions of going to such officially established gathering sites, which involved complicated matters. He preferred staying with small groups like Huang Biao’s.
Mu Qing, with her hands in the pockets of a green jacket, her hair lightly swaying in the wind, smiled and said, "Alright, no problem. With your abilities, you don’t need protection... I’ll transfer you the points later. If you have any issues, just contact me. I’ve added you, Bixian."
Su Changxing nodded and said, "Okay, be careful, and don’t get caught again."
After more than ten minutes, Su Changxing looked in another direction along the street. Seven or eight people in green camo uniforms, holding weapons, were slowly approaching while clearing zombies.
Their actions were decisive, with a high degree of coordination, appearing well-trained.
The leader, a middle-aged man with a stern face and rough skin, approached Mu Qing and nodded, saying, "Executor, we’ve come to escort you back to the gathering site."
Mu Qing nodded expressionlessly and said, "Hmm, thank you for your hard work. Let’s leave now."
The middle-aged man gave Su Changxing a brief glance, then continued, "Since the site is still under preparation, according to the regulations, we are not accepting any other personnel."
Su Changxing raised an eyebrow and smiled, "Don’t worry, I won’t go with you. I’m not familiar with her."
Mu Qing showed a slight smile as she looked at Su Changxing and said, "Farewell then, don’t die."
The middle-aged man frowned slightly, said nothing, then waved and led his team back in the direction they had come from, walking at the rear.
Su Changxing followed slowly behind them. With others clearing the zombies, he could relax while keeping an eye out for a relatively safe place to take a nap.
Because of the Dreamer, he already felt a hint of drowsiness.
After walking for four or five minutes, the middle-aged man stopped and looked at Su Changxing, questioning, "If you’re not coming, why are you following us?"
Su Changxing looked at him with some curiosity and laughed, "The road is only so wide; can’t I go the same way?"
A glimmer of blue light flashed in Mu Qing’s eyes as she said, "Although he can’t go to the gathering site, helping protect civilians within one’s ability shouldn’t be a problem."
The middle-aged man thought for a moment, his expression still stern, and said, "To ensure safety, please wait until we leave before proceeding."
