Chapter 90: Chapter 89: Round Over
Zaen hissed in pain. Nuang’s rapier was incredibly accurate, and coupled with her inhuman movements, made it impossible for him to dodge the strikes infinitely.
At first, the blindfold helped him, but Nuang, as if realizing, began changing her moves erratically. The blindfold kept altering the ’lines’ at the last moments, which once again threw him off.
Nuang smiled at him, the strange goo appearing in her hand.
"It was a nice chat," she mumbled. "We should continue it when we’re back in the lair."
Before she could slap the goo on his face, Zaen hit her with the stick and jumped away. However, the maneuver cost him a lot. The rapier ripped through his shoulder, spurting blood everywhere.
"Still had some strength left?" Nuang scoffed. "The more you struggle, the more I want to turn you into my dog."
Zaen popped a pill into his mouth to heal up, all the while looking at the spot where he had killed Nuang’s last ’dog’. Honestly, they were strong, too strong for him to win on his own.
And this stupid system has gone silent at a time like this.
Even while facing the anomalies, there had been hints of victory all over the place. However, now he didn’t have a way to win. Although he had the fortune wheel, with only two points to spare, it was as good as nothing.
Should I go berserk?
The thought entered his mind, but in the two times he had used it, it had never ended well. Sure, he got his victory, but the events that followed ruined his life.
"Then there’s only one thing left to do..." Zaen mumbled through gritted teeth.
Before he could do anything, Nuang slapped a massive ball of goo on his face.
Zaen fell to the ground, scratching the goo like everyone before. However, to ensure he couldn’t get out of it, Nuang had used an unusual amount of goo, leaving only Zaen’s forehead exposed.
"I would have covered your entire body if I wasn’t running low on the supply," Nuang said, squatting down before Zaen while he struggled to breathe. "Don’t worry, I’ll let you go after knocking you out."
Soon, the goo successfully invaded his mouth and nose. Zaen’s clawing got even more frantic.
Sure of her victory, Nuang didn’t bother with the rest of them. However, as soon as she dropped her guard, Zaen’s hand shot out and grabbed her by the opening of her hoodie.
"What—?"
Before she could question the motive, Zaen slammed his forehead against hers. Nuang fell backwards, feeling the warm blood trickling down her face. She grabbed her head, and though it was buzzing with pain, her head was intact.
"The blood...?"
All colors drained from her face when she realized what had happened. She hurriedly looked back at Zaen, only to see the goo shifting towards his open wound.
"AH!"
Zaen gasped for air as soon as the goo stopped clamping down on his mouth. His breaths were heavy and labored, but still, he was smiling like a fool who won the lottery.
"Gotcha, bitch."
His words didn’t infuriate Nuang because she was still thinking about how he knew about the goo’s weakness.
Although it appeared that she was controlling the goo, it was just a low-grade artificially engineered anomaly that she kept by her side. In reality, she was just a swordswoman.
As for the goo, like most low-grade anomalies, it was infatuated with human flesh and blood.
Hence, whenever Nuang slapped it on someone’s face, it naturally wanted to get within their body, and the obvious method was via the nearest orifices.
As a result, it clogs one’s mouth and nose when slapped on their face, trying to get inside their body.
However, when Zaen’s head cracked open, they found immediate access to blood and willingly left the nose and mouth.
"How did you—!?" Nuang snarled, but stopped after seeing the sight before her.
Instead of attacking her, Zaen slashed his body in multiple places. The goo left his face and harmlessly began feeding on the blood.
At the same time, something else happened.
The goo that had covered Mimi, Ben, and Hina slowly slipped off their bodies.
While Ben was knocked out for good, the girls were only shaken momentarily before seeing the goo feeding on Zaen’s blood that had scattered around after the rapier ripped through his shoulder.
Who would have thought that a careless observation would lead me to this discovery?
If not for the tense situation and the goo sucking his blood, he would have patted his own back.
Back when he threw Nuang’s dog’s severed limb at her, he had noticed the static-textured goo moving towards the arm. However, since she had tightly grabbed the goo, it couldn’t latch on to the limb.
It was then that Zaen realized Nuang didn’t have absolute control over the goo.
His theory was further backed by the fact that after throwing the goo, she didn’t immediately leave the surroundings, waiting for the goo to get deeper into the target’s mouth.
If she had absolute control, then why would she need to stick around till the target was completely immobilized?
"Then, there’s your stinginess," Zaen coughed, spitting out the last bit of goo that was stuck in his mouth. "If I had absolute control over the goo, I would turn it into people’s coffins. But you only use a small amount each time as if it would run out."
"Not to mention them," he continued while pointing at the ones she had struck before fighting Zaen’s group. "If your control over the goo was perfect, it wouldn’t make sense to leave them attached to corpses. Instead of using a new batch, you could have made the goo hop from person to person."
Her glare towards Blaze intensified as he stripped her weakness bare before her. Not only was he good at fighting, but he was also quick-witted.
"To think you’d piece together my weakness based on such flimsy details," Nuang smirked, clapping along. "Alas, we have already achieved our goal here."
As soon as she said those words, Beep-Boop appeared there, and along with it appeared strange portals.
[The scenario has been irreparably altered.]
[Initiating clean-up protocol.]
[All survivors will pass this round. Please leave the scenario through the portals.]
"I’ll see you again... Zaen," Nuang snarled as she disappeared inside a portal.
Zaen wanted to chase her, but his legs gave out as Beep-Boop appeared before him.
[Each participant can only leave through their assigned portal. Ignoring the rule would lead to their stamina being drained.]
Zaen could only click his tongue in frustration as the cultists left. None of them shared the portals with the other group. Perhaps it was another one of Beep-Boop’s ploys to make things exciting for the next round.
