Chapter 337: An Invitation
"Where’s Riven?"
Xavier asked the sleepy lion-man slumped against a tree, drool threatening to escape from the corner of his mouth. He looked half-asleep, his golden mane glinting lazily in the sunlight. His hair waved in the wind, he looked... Well, he looked like Sleeping Beauty.
Xavier frowned. Did this lion have
any
sense of awareness? If danger came knocking, this idiot would probably hand it a pillow and a blanket.
The lion cracked one eye open and mumbled, "He, uh... He was talking to some guy."
"Some guy?" Xavier’s eyebrow shot up. Riven was talking to some random man? That never ended well. Did Riven want more trouble? This was bad, more
competition for his master
? He’d better check it out before things escalated.
He followed the faint sound of voices until he spotted them near the mouth of an alley.
And there it was. Riven, with his smug grin and hands gesturing animatedly, was explaining something in
painful detail.
Bob—the "some guy"—was standing stiff as a fencepost, his freckled face twisted in disbelief, horror, and possibly a touch of regret for every decision that had led him to this very moment.
"...and that’s when the knotting happens," Riven was saying cheerfully, like he was describing how to tie a fishing lure. "It’s perfectly natural. The Alpha and their mate—well, they sort of... stick together. Like a puzzle that perfectly fit."
"A Puzzle?!" Bob clutched his thinning hair like the world was ending. "That’s not—no. No! I—I can’t! I won’t! I’m forty-six, Riven, my knees can’t even handle the
stairs
anymore! You think they’ll handle
this?!
"
Riven tilted his head thoughtfully, as if considering the biomechanics of Bob’s knees. "Well, that depends on the position—" Bob has a new body, he was no longer a middle-aged man, but his brain still has to catch up, Riven understood that.
"Stop!" Bob flailed his arms. "Stop right there!"
It was at that moment that Xavier decided he had seen enough.
"Didn’t Master tell you to stay put?" Xavier cut in, his voice sharp with reprimand. He stepped into the alley, arms folded. His piercing eyes swept the scene: Riven standing too close to Bob, Bob looking like he was about to have a nervous breakdown, and the faint smell of roasted meat coming from the paper bag in his hand.
Riven glanced over his shoulder and shrugged, unbothered. "Master tells me lots of things."
"
Some guy
, huh?" Xavier muttered under his breath, glaring at the lion in the distance.
The whole situation was absurd. They were supposed to be on their way back by now!
"Who is this?" Xavier demanded.
Riven smiled. "This is Bob. He was driving the truck."
"The what?" Oh, right, Xavier did not know what that was.
"Eh, it’s nothing. He’s my new friend!" Riven grinned and pulled Bob in for a side hug.
Xavier sighed through his nose. His patience was hanging by a thread. He reached into the bag slung over his shoulder, pulled out a sandwich, and without ceremony, tossed it at Riven.
Riven caught it one-handed, grinning as though Xavier had just thrown him a bouquet of roses.
"See, Bob?" Riven said, waving the sandwich like a prize. "This is why I keep Xavier around. He throws me food. No offence, buddy," he added, taking a big bite.
Xavier’s mouth twitched. "You’re welcome," he muttered flatly.
Bob blinked. "Wait. So who is this ’Master’?"
"Oh, that’s just Soren," Riven said casually through a mouthful of bread. "He wouldn’t let me go out if I didn’t take Xavier with me."
Bob narrowed his eyes, confused. "So... Soren’s your... Boss?"
"He can be the boss of me nyehe," Riven grinned, but it did not earn him a good response so he coughed and clarified, "He is my boyfriend."
Bob’s eyebrows furrowed, wait a minute.
Riven ignored him. He jerked his thumb toward Xavier. "By the way, do you know him? He’s also in his forties."
Bob stared at Xavier, then back at Riven. His face contorted with incredulity. "No, I am not acquainted with
every
man in his forties, Riven."
If Ronan was Riven’s mate... and now Soren was his
boyfriend
... then— "How does this work?!" Bob blurted out, his hands flailing in the air. "How could this master be your boyfriend when Ronan is your mate!"
Ronan made a grand declaration and warning that they had to respect Riven, his mate. It was because of that move, people were more accepting of Bob. Since male omegas are being accepted more and more, Bob did not have to face any discrimination or an end like previous Riven did. Killed off because he was seen as a burden.
Riven simply smiled, cool as a cucumber, like he had just been waiting for this moment."You’re mated to triplets. Why can’t I have at least two? If everything goes well, I could have four."
Bob choked on his own spit. "
Four?!
Are you insane?!"
"Why insane?" Riven tilted his head, the picture of innocence. "You’re greedy, I’m greedy. We’re the same kind."
"We are
not
the same kind!" Bob snapped, pointing a trembling finger at him. "My situation is different! I—I didn’t
plan
the triplets, okay?! That was— that was fate. It wasn’t me being some..."
"Hoe?" Riven finished the sentence. He did not look offended. Just amused.
"No-" He answered quickly, but he did not seem confident in his denial.
"It’s okay, I am. And I am proud of it." His ears were pointed and his tail was swishing with vigour. He was very proud of it indeed.
Xavier, who had been leaning against the wall, calmly folded his arms and nodded like a man judging a circus performance. "Wow..." Whispered to himself.
"Anyway, I am going to invite you to my home, and you should definitely say yes, I fear I am your only friend here." Riven smiled at Bob, it was an offer he could not refuse.
"And I fear that statement holds true for you, too." Bob frowned.
