At 11 pm, Tang Hanlu solved the last math question and put down her pen. She turned to look at the clock. She removed her glasses and rubbed her dry eyes. “Mom still hasn’t gotten back from work. Recently, she has been coming back later and later.”
The cold wind blew in from the window. The temperature dropped and formed frost on the windows. The night descended. Xin Shu Er Yi, the star that represented summer, had disappeared down to the west. From that day onwards, the days would be shorter and the nights longer.

Her exposed toes were cold. Tang Hanlu suddenly realised she had been facing away from the living room while doing her homework. She put down her bag. The broken keychain was stuck to the zipper. Tang Hanlu touched the sharp cut. When she was about to reach home from school, a man in a mask and cap bumped into her. The man rushed out of her building’s elevator. However, she had never seen him before.
“Sh…” Tang Hanlu’s finger was cut open a small scratch by the keychain. Her fingerprint was cleanly sliced through.
“When I entered the elevator, the man hadn’t left. Did he see what floor I’m staying on?” Tang Hanlu felt colder. She rummaged through her school bag. “Where is the key? I remember I had it inside the side pocket. Did I leave it on the door?” Tang Hanlu turned to the dark living room. She hesitated. “I don’t think I locked the front door.”
The living room became more unfamiliar. She felt strangely unwelcomed at her home. The chill crawled up her legs. It felt like something was watching her or something was breathing down her neck.
“Key… Key…”
She tried to walk gingerly, but her slippers still slapped loudly against the floor. She finally reached the living room. She ran to switch on the lights. She looked around. Everything was expected in the living room, but she still couldn’t find her key.
“Did I lose it? Could the man have picked it up? Why was he here?”
Someone knocked on her door suddenly. Tang Hanlu’s hands went to her heart.
“Is someone home?” A woman’s voice came from the door. She sounded urgent.
Tang Hanlu stared at the locked door. She didn’t dare to go over. The solid door seemed to shake along with the woman’s cries.
“Key. Where did I leave my key?”
“My child hasn’t come home. Did you see her? Is someone home? Is someone home!” The woman’s voice turned shrill. “She was playing outside the door. She was drawing on the shoe rack. When I came out, she was gone. My house’s camera caught her walking down the stairs. She came to this floor. Something got her attention and made her come down here! Please! Open the door! Let me check your home surveillance, okay?!”
