I Really Didn’t Want to Be a Trainer-Chapter 689: Hydro Cannon vs. Origin Pulse!

Hoenn region, Slateport City.
Six hours earlier, Teacher Lu was here teasing the sun coral, admiring the swaying red seagrass.
Two hours after Kyogre moved.
A tsunami swallowed the famous scenic beach, white waves driving lounge chairs, umbrellas, and beach volleyballs. Clouds of Tentacool surged into the city with the current, their tentacles interlocking to form a lethal firewall for humans while ensuring their companions would not be swept away by the torrent.
"Whoosh~" Magikarp kept bouncing on the sea surface.
Gyarados, intimidated by the presence of the ancient Pokémon, dove down into the depths.
Only a red-faced, ferocious Gyarados rode the waves on the surface, its forehead carrying the red-haired boy who gripped a spyglass.
"Hey! See anything?"
A ship sailed side by side with the red Gyarados, the hull bearing the name Waterflow. Marshal shoved his way into the captain's cabin, pushing the peaked-cap boy aside.
"Turn back!" Marshal gripped the helm tightly and roared, "The Waterflow is out of control — we're all goners!"
A-Jin raised an eyebrow and said, "I've got Winged Boy, that guy's got Gyarados… do I really need to say who's dangerous?"
Marshal froze for a moment and scratched his head.
Crap… it seems I really don't have a Water-type Pokémon!
Damn it, I shouldn't have agreed to let that brat on board. I was only being nice and giving him a ride, and now this tsunami shows up!
"Stop hassling Marshal!" Kris angrily grabbed A-Jin by the ear and hauled him out of the captain's cabin. "This is all A-Jin's fault for saying we should come to Hoenn — look at what trouble he brought!"
"Ow… it hurts, it hurts. I'm not— I just wanted to show you the meteor shower!" A-Jin gritted his teeth. "I didn't expect we'd run into a once-in-a-century mega tsunami on arrival!"
"That tsunami wasn't caused by nature."
The red-haired boy reined in his Gyarados, leapt onto Waterflow's deck, and frowned. "I'm worried… it might be connected to the ancient Pokémon recorded in history."
"Ancient Pokémon? Like that sheep… cough, like Arceus?" A-Jin exclaimed.
"If I'm right…" Xiao Yin stared back at the raging sea.
"Then the source is the sea god, Kyogre!"
"Professor Oak mentioned it to me," Kris said. "A mythical beast that brings torrential rain when it awakens—very dangerous!"
A-Jin scratched his head and muttered, "Why does disaster always happen wherever Teacher Lu shows up…"
"What?"
"Never mind… my phone has no signal;
we can't reach Red or Ash." A-Jin shook his phone.
"The phone has no signal, but the marine radio does!"
Marshal spread a sly grin and adjusted the frequency. The trio from Vermilion leaned in, curious, listening to the crackling radio.
"Holy— there's a voice!" A-Jin exclaimed.
"Quiet!" All three glared at him.
A-Jin sheepishly smiled and decided not to make a scene for the moment…
"Can you hear us?"
A human voice finally came through the radio clearly.
Marshal replied into the transmitter, "Yes, this is Slateport's Waterflow. Go ahead!"
"This is Hoenn Abyss No. 2, acting captain, Littleroot's proprietor Adam!"
Adam spoke urgently: "Kyogre engaged Wallace and submerged. It's heading rapidly toward your position. Whatever you do, do not enrage it — the Hoenn League will dispatch trainers to deal with it!"
Kyogre… was fighting Champion Wallace?
The thought flashed through A-Jin's mind. He snatched Marshal's transmitter and shouted, "This is Johto's star trainer A-Jin! How is Champion Wallace? We're his allies!"
"Who is A-Jin?" Adam paused. "I've never heard of you…"
"Never mind that!" A-Jin snapped.
"It's not good…" Adam's voice turned hoarse as he looked back.
Wallace was shirtless and wrapped in bandages, forcing Kyogre to submerge again to stop the rains from worsening — that was already the champion's limit.
"Wallace was struck by falling ice fragments from the aftershock and is temporarily out of danger… Since you're acquaintances of Wallace, do not act rashly;
evacuate that sea area immediately!"
The radio hissed with static. A tense silence filled the cramped captain's cabin.
Marshal, Xiao Yin, and Kris instinctively turned their gazes to A-Jin.
"What should we do?" Xiao Yin said calmly. "You give the orders."
A-Jin bit his lip. "I don't know… but…!"
Smack!
He slapped his own cheek hard and yelled, "If Teacher Lu and Red were here, they'd charge out and smash Kyogre to pieces!"
Marshal pressed his face to the porthole, his expression changing sharply. He glanced at the still-functioning transmitter, then at the massive dark shape racing closer beneath the towering waves outside.
"Do you think… Kyogre can understand radio waves and translate them into human speech?" Marshal said with an awkward laugh.
A-Jin froze, scratched his head, and grinned, "That's probably not that impressive, right?"
"Haha, I think so too." Marshal nodded.
"Idiot!" Xiao Yin's face darkened as he snapped, "That's Kyogre!"
Before he finished, a gigantic whirlpool swallowed the Waterflow. Waves nearly ten meters tall formed a nearly 70° sloped hollow, twisting into a vortex. The ship rocked wildly;
not capsizing would be a favor from Arceus.
Boom!
Lightning streaked across the sky. Looking up at the nearly ten-meter crest, Kyogre's white lower jaw appeared first, then its wings and deep-blue belly, and finally its lashing tail fin.
Thunder cracked as Prime Kyogre hovered beneath the storm clouds, its rising wave almost tearing the sky apart!
A red flash blossomed in a Poké Ball aboard the Waterflow. A flicker of mockery passed across Kyogre's eyes as it halted and fixed its gaze on the humans daring to provoke it.
"Roar!!"
The red Gyarados reared up within the maelstrom and tore a savage roar toward Kyogre. Xiao Yin stood grim-faced on its head, Marshal trembling with lingering fear.
"Woohoo!!"
Winged Boy burst from a wave. A-Jin put on goggles, grabbed the glider frame made from a cue stick, and directed a volley from a school of Feebas:
"Everyone, fire Hydro Pump together!"
Bang!!
Twenty Feebas unleashed synchronized Hydro Pumps at Kyogre's massive body—
With minimal effect.
Like kids spraying water guns at a fully equipped special-ops soldier.
Kyogre seemed to sneer, opening its massive maw as surging energies gathered and a brilliant light blossomed from within!
Their faces drained of color.
Kyogre's eyes darted playfully to Gold the Fifth suspended midair, then curved in a mischievous smile.
Hydro Pumps, huh?
My turn!!
"Roar!!" Kyogre opened its mouth and surging energies burst forth, the world falling silent!
Origin Pulse!!!
In an instant, the sea boiled and waves heaved like cliffs crumbling into the ocean;
beams of light rained down from the heavens!
Boom!!
Marshal's face drained of blood. "That thing… is it going to die?"
"Relax," Xiao Yin said. "If he could die that easily, he wouldn't be A-Jin."
In the emergency, A-Jin released Winged Boy and let himself plunge into the sea, holding his breath and grabbing Polibro to dive deeper underwater.
The ocean surface behind him looked like it had been struck by a cannon;
waves raced across, slamming into A-Jin's back. He opened his eyes wide, rode the rising surge back to the surface, and gasped:
"Hah… damn it, I almost died!"
Kris rode atop Lapras, hauled the injured A-Jin up, and looped his arm around her neck in concern. "Are you okay…?"
"I'm fine."
A-Jin swept wet black hair aside and stared up at Kyogre beneath the storm canopy, panting, "That fat-headed fish… it wants to duel me on land!"
Kris helplessly said, "If it comes ashore, it'll probably be facing Groudon."
A-Jin: ???
"I suspect trainers on the western front will be fighting Groudon," Kris said with a wry smile. "And on the eastern front… it's this Kyogre."
Beep beep beep—
Marshal's earpiece suddenly chirped.
"Who could be calling at a time like this?"
Marshal muttered and tapped the Bluetooth, his expression shifting as he flashed a big grin.
"Yes, received!"
"What's up?" Xiao Yin asked.
Marshal chuckled but didn't answer.
The earlier contact had come over the long-absent Team Rocket channel.
When connected, a cold, hoarse command came through.
"Stay put. I'll be there immediately!"
Whoosh—
A submarine cleaved the surface, the R emblem flashing!
The hatch opened.
A man in a suit stood on the sub, wind and spray parting around him, hands in his pockets, staring at the ancient creature in the distance.
Giovanni's lips twisted in derision, hands in pockets, the metallic R on his chest catching the light.
Bang!!
A red flash streaked from beside him.
A Beedrill with blood-red compound eyes and bristling stingers sliced into the storm, cutting toward Kyogre in the sky!!
"Xiao Yin!"
Giovanni barked:
"That Kyogre is too dangerous — don't act recklessly!"
At the same moment.
Beedrill's twin stingers jabbed toward Kyogre's pale yellow eyes. Kyogre beat its wings and let out a furious roar!
"Roar!!!"
A haunting, world-shaking whale cry.
Marshal's expression turned odd. Telling Xiao Yin not to act recklessly… the one who acts recklessly here is Boss Giovanni!
Xiao Yin snapped his head around and made eye contact with the man on the submarine.
"Father…"
"Leave this to me."
The sub pulled alongside the red Gyarados. Gyarados bowed its head slowly as father and son met each other's gaze.
"Or," Giovanni relaxed a wrinkle into a small smile, "we could fight side by side."
Xiao Yin was taken aback, his eyes glinting, then he nodded.
"Save the sentimentality, Uncle Giovanni!!"
A-Jin leaned against Kris and struggled to stand. "That fat-headed fish's Hydro Pump is terrifying… you need to be prepared!"
"That's not a Hydro Pump…"
Giovanni lifted his gaze to Kyogre in the sky.
"That's… Origin Pulse!"
Kyogre opened its huge mouth as a harsh white light flowed within;
water and gale-force winds intertwined as the dazzling Origin Pulse slammed like a light cannon into Beedrill's back!
Boom!!!
Waves erupted. Before Beedrill could fall, a red flash recalled it into its Poké Ball.
A-Jin: "Beedrill — was that a one-hit KO?!"
"This isn't my battlefield."
Giovanni stood atop the submarine with hands in pockets and said calmly, "I'm here to lead my son in retreat. Bystanders are none of my concern."
Marshal cried out, "Boss, take me! I've bled and labored for Team Rocket!"
A human touch surfaced in the midst of life-or-death conflict.
A-Jin opened his mouth and, staring up at Kyogre charging its power, muttered, "There's always wood left in the forest when the trees burn!"
Then he brightened and looked at Giovanni with shining eyes, clasping his hands together: "Boss Giovanni, I've admired Team Rocket for ages—take me with you!"
Xiao Yin pinched his brow, giving A-Jin the 'this guy is hopeless' look.
Giovanni paused. "And you are?"
"We met back in Michina!" A-Jin gritted his teeth. "Boss, are you face-blind?!"
The rain intensified, cutting off the conversation. Giovanni's expression turned solemn.
"Advance the submarine."
That talking Meowth — their submarine was relatively advanced.
Giovanni pondered.
The downpour swelled. Kris reached out for A-Jin, but a towering wave suddenly crashed between them like a chasm!
"Class rep!" A-Jin's face paled. "Hold tightly to Lapras — don't let go!"
Kris looked toward the charging Origin Pulse, trembling as she fumbled a Dive Ball from her hand and grit her teeth:
"I'm a Pokédex holder too… don't underestimate me!"
If she could hit it… even delaying it by half a second would help!
But Kris's hands were shaking on the churning sea;
she clung to Lapras with no chance to release a Pokémon.
Kyogre hovered beneath thunderous skies, spreading wings and tailfin as it looked down at the roiling ocean;
to it, Lapras seemed like a fragile leaf adrift!
Kyogre opened its huge mouth as energies gathered. A human-like taunt glinted in Kyogre's eyes.
Bang! Bang!
Far off, a bright red Latias skimmed the sea surface, stirring up a row of water spouts.
The successive sonic booms drew Kyogre's attention to a distant sector of the sea.
The vivid red shape flashed brighter as it ascended rapidly. Riding on Latias's back was a black-haired youth, bent low into the wind!
"Teacher Lu?!" A-Jin shouted.
"When did he learn aerial combat?!" Marshal exclaimed.
"Teacher Lu and Latias are kinda cool…" Kris said, dazed.
Everyone agreed:
A flying champion is the full embodiment of a champion!
"Slow down, slow down!"
Lu Ye clung tightly to Latias's neck, dizzy as he turned his head like a novice driver:
"Does this thing have a handbrake? Where's the clutch?!"
"Idiot, don't fumble around — it tickles!" Latias blushed and scolded.
Suddenly, both of them froze and looked up at the imposing sea god in the sky.
"Well, we certainly ran into a big one…"
Lu Ye flew low over the sea, staring up at the massive Kyogre and murmuring.
"Stupid big lump, you fat fish!" Latias angrily cursed.
"Kids shouldn't swear… whatever, suit yourself."
Teacher Lu's emotions were mixed.
He had come to assist Wallace, and immediately collided with Kyogre…
Not sure whether to call it bad luck or extraordinary fortune.
Kyogre beat its wings and paused in the air above the battlefield, thick storm clouds behind it.
In the next instant Kyogre's glare turned furious. It opened its mouth and targeted Latias — the unexpected arrival — for attack!
"Lu Ye!" Giovanni barked, "Watch out for its Origin Pulse!"
There was no time to wonder why Giovanni had shown up here.
A surge of danger ran up Lu Ye's spine, bringing sharp tension and an adrenaline spike that sharpened his thinking.
There was no time to dodge the Origin Pulse.
Even teleporting it away could destroy the Reversed World.
Only one option remained!
Lu Ye hurled a Dive Ball at great speed. Beside him, Victini's figure appeared. Lu Ye shouted over the thunder:
"Victini, use Helping Hand!"
"Nimi~!!"
Victini's V-mark heated, it raised a victory gesture, and an endless stream of energy poured into the surfacing Blastoise.
Whatever buff it was, give it everything!!
Lu Ye threw himself all in, Aura and Power of Transcendence both flaring. His eyes were steely as he rode on Latias, black hair whipping in the gusts.
Rain lashed down. On the dark sea surface, a turtle shell surfaced, rings of ripples spreading around it.
Blastoise slowly raised its head and met Prime Kyogre's gaze in the sky.
"Ka-may…ヾ(⌐■_■)"
A hint of disdain flashed in Prime Kyogre's eyes. It opened its maw wide;
terrifying energy swirled inside!!
Xiao Yin's expression changed.
Teacher Lu… is trying to use Blastoise's Hydro Cannon to block an Origin Pulse?!
Isn't that a fool's dream!
But—
"The legendary Pokémon with infinite energy, Victini!" Kris cried out.
Victini's energy flowed into Blastoise, and the fire of victory transformed into biting cold, forming a sheet of ice beneath Blastoise!
Rumble!
Lightning crisscrossed the sky. Blastoise stepped onto the floating ice, removed its cherished sunglasses.
Behind the shades, a pair of death-defying, fierce eyes.
Blastoise's facial muscles tensed as it stared at Kyogre!
"Ka-may!"
A decade's honing forged into a blade never yet tested.
Today it will be shown;
who dares complain?!
A red glow burst from Blastoise's shell. Surging water jets wrapped its feet and then exploded outward with a 'thump.'
Ability: Torrent!!
"How could it come out with Torrent active at entry…" Boss Giovanni muttered in confusion.
"What the hell kind of cheat is this!" Marshal's face went pale.
The power-up wasn't finished.
To counter an Origin Pulse, you need a wave of comparable force to neutralize it!
Ink-black sky, monsoon rain, and roaring waves!
Lu Ye rode on Latias's back and raised his gloved hand high with fingers exposed.
At the peak of the gesture, his hand tilted to one side.
The Keystone set into the glove blazed with an incredibly bright white light. In an instant, the entire sea area looked like daytime!!
"Blastoise—"
Everyone's breath seemed to freeze. Lu Ye's voice cut through the storm, ringing across the sky above the sea.
"Mega Evolution!!"
Rainbow light enveloped Blastoise. Its two rear cannons merged into one, forming a final weapon. Blastoise's eyes buzzed with a red glow;
a crest rose from its forehead. Its fists gathered water, launchers on its forearms flashed cold light, and the rainbow Mega symbol bloomed on its brow!
Mega Blastoise, Ability: Mega Launcher!!
Roaring Aura spread across the sea, billowing wave after wave of shockwaves.
Even Giovanni had never seen any Pokémon wield Aura to such an extreme.
This was the result of infinite energy amplification: trainer and Pokémon united in unwavering belief, their bond reaching the pinnacle!
"Maybe… it really can block the Origin Pulse!" Giovanni's eyes flickered.
A flicker of hesitation passed in Prime Kyogre's eyes. Waters behind it surged into monstrous floods, waves rolling, the towering water column in its mouth building to strike.
A nuclear-like pressure, an ancient deluge.
Prime Kyogre's Origin Pulse!
Boom!!
"Mega Blastoise, full power—"
Lu Ye's voice was icy:
"Hydro Cannon!!!"
Mega Blastoise braced, cannons swelling with water flow. Three jets combined into a single Hydro Cannon and surged toward the descending pillar of light.
The sea under the floating ice caved downward;
the waves on both sides pulled up like split walls. At the center of the depressed sea stood the resolute Mega Blastoise.
"Ka-may!!"
Origin Pulse and Hydro Cannon collided head-on!
Thunderous booms reverberated;
the sea erupted into titanic waves, churning without end!
Johto's Pokédex holders stood dumbfounded.
"Holy crap!"
Gold the Fifth reacted first.
"They're actually going to smash Kyogre!"
Two columns of light wrestled like titans;
neither gave ground.
A flash of terror crossed Kyogre's eyes.
Boom!!
The Hydro Cannon smashed the Origin Pulse, shattering much of the incoming water column. The reduced beam slams into Kyogre with tremendous force, sending it hurtling into the waves!
The massive ancient Pokémon fell from the sky and slammed into the sea, churning up a colossal swell.
Boom!!
Kyogre wasn't exhausted;
it bobbed in the undulating sea, enveloped in apprehension and confusion.
Could a Blastoise really do that?
That Blastoise had used Hydro Cannon to shatter Origin Pulse head-on!??
For half an hour after the clash, Kyogre drifted quietly in the sea, showing no intent to continue fighting.
Ancient Pokémon are intelligent creatures.
They know how to conserve energy;
battles between rivals are the real main event.
Kyogre submerged to the seabed and looked up at Blastoise's belly, staring through the surface toward the black-haired youth on Latias's back.
"Maybe… I should slip away first."
Kyogre thought:
"Avoid that human and Blastoise… take a detour?"
The sea became calm and windless. The duel they'd just witnessed left an indelible impression.
Giovanni lifted his head, lips moving, but finally said nothing.
Teacher Lu relaxed slightly atop Latias.
They had bought enough time…
Lu Ye's glance fell on Mega Blastoise standing on the ice.
Blastoise had left Mega form and slid its shades back on, slowly producing a roll of Revival Root.
"Ka-may…ヾ(⌐■_■)"
That was close… but I'm still alive.
Lu Ye: "……"
Even if it has to shoulder Primal Groudon and hold Prime Kyogre in check, Turtwig's evolution remains invincible in this world!
