Chapter 505: Chapter 505: Let Me Tell Two More Stories_1
「The next morning.」
Ruan Lan came downstairs holding the chessboard, only to see her sister and niece enjoying breakfast. She looked them over and exclaimed, "A woman nourished by love is truly different! Sister, you have no idea how much you change from one day to the next."
Ruan Tang shot Ruan Lan a glare. "Shut up. Go wash up and then eat."
"Your complexion gets better every day." Ruan Lan continued to muse aloud, "Should I find a boyfriend? Hmm... a girlfriend would be fine too."
"..."
Ruan Tang fell silent. She put down her chopsticks and looked at Ruan Lan calmly. The chill in her gaze made her younger sister’s body tremble slightly.
What terrifying killing intent!
Ruan Lan muttered, "I was just kidding. How could I possibly like girls?"
Xu Lai emerged from the kitchen carrying four glasses of soy milk and said evenly, "Don’t all men like girls?"
"Well, of course." Ruan Lan nodded, but she quickly grew suspicious. She vaguely sensed a hidden meaning in Xu Lai’s words, but she couldn’t quite put her finger on it.
It wasn’t until they were halfway through the meal that Ruan Tang finally burst out indignantly, "You rotten brother-in-law, are you saying I’m like a man?!"
"Did I say that?" Xu Lai looked at Ruan Tang, who shook her head. He then looked at Yiyi, and his daughter shook her head too.
Xu Lai spread his hands. "See? I didn’t say it."
Ruan Lan clenched her small fists, flustered and annoyed. "You must be blind! Take a good look, these are 36Ds!"
"You mean AAs, right? Don’t flatter yourself."
"I’m not eating anymore! I’m too angry to eat!" Ruan Lan slammed her chopsticks down, fuming.
"Are you sure?" Xu Lai raised an eyebrow.
"I’m sure!" Ruan Lan said with conviction.
But then Yiyi said weakly, "Auntie, then you should put down your spoon, too."
With a single motion, Ruan Lan scooped a large piece of meat out of Yiyi’s bowl. "Shut up and eat."
"..."
Yiyi pouted, sulking. "That was my meat!"
「After breakfast.」
When taking Yiyi to kindergarten, Xu Lai made a point of asking her teacher for some time off for her. This trip to the Immortal Domain might last a day or two, or maybe even a week, so they had to be prepared. Xu Lai planned to show his wife and daughter the sights of the Eastern Desolate Domain. Though it was the most remote of the nine hundred and ninety-nine domains in the Eastern Immortal Domain, it was his home.
"Of course, Mr. Xu." Teacher Miao Momo naturally had no objections.
Qian Xiao, however, grew anxious. "Uncle Xu, where are you taking Sister Yiyi? When will you be back?"
Xu Lai gave him a smile that wasn’t quite a smile. "We’re immigrating. We’re not coming back."
Qian Xiao’s eyes immediately reddened. He looked at Xu Yiyi, hesitating, before finally stammering timidly, "Big Sister, is that true...?"
"It’s not." Yiyi glared at her dad and grumbled, "Adults aren’t supposed to lie."
Schooled by his daughter, Xu Lai coughed awkwardly.
Perched on Yiyi’s shoulder, Beibei was disappointed.
She had wanted to see Kid Qian blubbering, after all.
But she wouldn’t miss this chance to kick him while he was down. "Look at you, what a crybaby. You’re not manly at all."
"I don’t know if I’m manly or not, but Uncle Xu is just plain mean!" Qian Xiao wiped the tears from his eyes and declared loudly, "I, Qian Xiao, will definitely cultivate diligently and always follow Big Sister! If the heavens obstruct me, I shall tear the heavens apart! If the earth blocks my way, I shall shatter the earth!"
At this, Qian Xiao huffed, "Uncle Xu, don’t do anything you’ll regret. The future of this world belongs to us young people!"
Xu Lai kicked Qian Xiao into the kindergarten. "I’m afraid you won’t live to see it."
Then he turned to the dumbfounded Miao Momo and smiled. "Teacher Miao, please give Qian Xiao a little extra homework for the next couple of days."
Qian Xiao: ???
He protested indignantly, "This is a duel between men! How could you drag a woman into it?"
THUMP.
Miao Momo gently tapped Qian Xiao on the head. "Enough of your sass. Get back to the classroom, class is about to start."
"Bye, Daddy," Yiyi waved.
"I’ll pick you up tonight," Xu Lai waved back.
Throughout the day, Xu Lai was somewhat distracted. The thought of his impending return to the Old Heavenly Court had put him in a visibly low mood. He spent a good seven or eight hours just staring out the window, lost in a daze. It was so noticeable that even Liu Nanwei, who was always cracking risqué jokes, kept her mouth shut.
She shot Zhou Feng a look and whispered, "Director Xu doesn’t seem to be in a good mood."
"He does seem a bit off," Zhou Feng nodded.
The two whispered for a while but neither dared to ask what was wrong. Instead, they quickly fell silent, giving Xu Lai his space.
Just as they were about to leave for the day, Xu Lai looked over at Liu Nanwei. His gaze was so intense it made her scalp tingle. "Dr. Liu, how about a risqué joke?"
She instinctively crossed her arms in front of her chest and said nervously, "Director Xu, I’m married."
"I know."
"I’m pregnant."
"...I know."
Xu Lai didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. "Don’t look at me like I’m a pervert. I just want to unwind a little."
Liu Nanwei still looked suspicious, but she had to admit, going a whole day without cracking a dirty joke felt a bit strange. She took a sip of tea to wet her throat and, with an animated expression, launched into a new joke she’d recently heard.
It was so bawdy that Zhou Feng had to keep drinking water to hide his embarrassment. Even Xu Lai couldn’t handle it. "Stop, stop, stop! The wheels are flying off and about to hit me in the face!"
Liu Nanwei seemed reluctant to stop. "Just let me tell a couple more."
"I won’t be here tomorrow or the day after. You can tell them to Zhou Feng."
"Director Xu, where are you going?" Liu Nanwei asked, surprised.
"To get married."
"Director Xu," Liu Nanwei said cautiously, "even if you and your wife got a divorce, you can’t remarry this quickly. It hasn’t even been a week."
"..."
"I’m going to my hometown to have another ceremony," Xu Lai said, his face dark.
"Oh, oh, I see." Liu Nanwei was relieved. "That makes sense. I knew Director Xu wasn’t that kind of person. Zhou Feng, you shouldn’t spread such rumors next time!"
Zhou Feng was baffled. He was certain he hadn’t said a thing.
「By evening.」
Xu Lai picked up his daughter and Ruan Tang and returned home. With a wave of his hand, a red, gilded bridal sedan chair, as exquisite as a work of art, appeared at the entrance of Haitang Court.
"Wow!" Yiyi had never seen such a thing before. Fascinated, she jumped inside and soon let out a cry of surprise. "It’s so big in here!"
The sedan chair looked small from the outside, but its interior was incredibly vast, as spacious as a palace hall.
"Are we taking a sedan chair back to your Sect?" Ruan Tang asked, startled.
"Yes." Xu Lai caressed the sedan chair and said softly, "I found the blueprints my master secretly drew long ago, so I had it made. If he’s watching from the great beyond, I’m sure he’ll be very happy."
Ruan Tang silently squeezed Xu Lai’s hand.
"Let’s get packed. We should go," Xu Lai said.
"Isn’t the trip for tomorrow?"
"The journey is quite long. If you sleep on the way, we’ll arrive right around noon tomorrow."
"Okay."
Ruan Tang turned and went back into Haitang Court to pack. Her parents had gone abroad the day after the wedding a week ago, so Ruan Lan, as the only remaining member of the bride’s family, would naturally be coming along. Although Beibei wasn’t family, she was staying by Yiyi’s side.
Yet, even when everything was ready, Xu Lai showed no sign of leaving. He leaned against the sedan chair, gazing at the horizon as if waiting for someone.
"Daddy, why aren’t we leaving yet?" Yiyi’s soft voice came from inside the sedan.
"We’re waiting for someone."
"Who are we waiting for?"
"He’s here."
Following Xu Lai’s gaze, Yiyi and Ruan Lan looked out curiously.
At the foot of the mountain, they saw a young man carrying a massive banner, walking step-by-step toward the summit. His pace was slow, yet exceptionally steady. The man appeared young, but his hair was completely white. On the banner he carried was a single, large character written with flamboyant strokes:
Xu.
