Chapter 1940

Chapter 1940: Chapter 1940: Opportunity to Enter the Eastern District
In the afternoon, Xu Huo was preparing to catch up on sleep, so she asked the mute girl to wake her up at dinner time.
Unexpectedly, before the meal was ready, a boy from downstairs came to knock on the door. The mute girl had just woken Xu Huo and went to open the door.
The boy straightened his thin body, "I want to eat. I can help you with chores, clean the house, cook, or run errands."
The mute girl immediately panicked, her survival instinct worrying that she might be kicked out because of the boy’s arrival, but her humanity stopped her from harboring ill will towards the boy, so she could only nervously point to the kitchen, indicating that the meal was almost ready, and she went to serve it.
Xu Huo let the boy in and also asked the mute girl to prepare all the vegetables bought today.
In the small living room, Xu Huo asked the boy a few questions.
The boy looked small, but he was actually ten years old. In the Western District, ten was considered an age old enough to be labor for the family. The reason he was so thin was simple; perhaps his irresponsible father left him to fend for himself.
"Why not leave?" Xu Huo finally asked.
"I’m not leaving. I want to grow up under his eyes, watch him grow old, then torture him, and eventually kill him," the boy said openly maliciously, looking at Xu Huo. "I’m the seed of a bad man, so I’m also a bad man."
Xu Huo didn’t say much more. When the food was on the table, she invited him to eat and then told him to take the remaining bit of bread crust home, "Your father is a physically robust, mentally sound adult, while you are a malnourished child without friends. Don’t think that just because he loses his limbs, he’s at your mercy."
The boy gripped the bag and nodded seriously.
"In the future, if you’re hungry, come to eat." Xu Huo told him, "When I’m not around, take care of each other with the mute girl."
The next day, Xu Huo went to work as usual, but after arriving at the Supervision Department, she learned that something big had happened in the Western District last night—a failed siege against the Resistance Army. The Eastern District even lost two advanced players.
Xu Huo expressed some regret and then, like everyone else, inquired about what happened.
A talkative Inspector rushed to share what he had found out.
Due to the rising incidents of attacks on Inspectors recently, the Eastern District Headquarters pointed the finger at the Resistance Army—whether or not the accusations were justified. They were opposed to each other anyway, and removing some people during this opportunity posed no loss to the Eastern District. It served to strike a warning blow.
This action was indeed consistent with the Eastern District’s stance. A few lives were insignificant; responding on a larger scale truly emphasized the superiority of the Eastern District.
So they planned to take down the Resistance Army’s headquarters, intending to kill a number of its core members and intimidating them from acting up for at least a year.
Coincidentally, with the incident at the freezing plant, the Eastern District Supervision Department even increased their manpower. Little did they know that their plan to besiege others would end up with others besieging them. The Resistance Army, at a small cost, killed two advanced players, severely injured more than ten others, and escaped swiftly. Not only did they avoid significant losses, but none of their players died, and the core members had already been relocated.
This battle was a resounding success for the Resistance Army, drastically different from their previously frequent heavy losses and struggles for survival against the Eastern District.
"The Resistance Army used to be so poor. Have they become rich recently?" An Inspector asked.
In the eyes of those in the Supervision Department, the showdown between the Resistance Army and the Eastern District players ultimately came down to props and devices. The Eastern District’s instruments were impeccable, and even the Rotating Aromatherapy was formidable. The Resistance Army managed such an easy escape, suggesting they had acquired specific props or instruments that countered the Rotating Aromatherapy. Given they managed to kill two people, it also indicated an increase in their weapons.
"What is this Rotating Aromatherapy?" Xu Huo interjected with a question.
"It’s that ball the Eastern District players have on their waists," Lin Guang explained. "Its real name is the D2 Vibration Disruptor. It can quickly render someone unconscious, and not just ordinary people, even players fear it. But it’s hollow and kind of like an old-fashioned scented ball. People have seen Eastern District players putting incense in it, so we call it that."
"The Rotating Aromatherapy doesn’t work on Eastern District players. I think they rely on it too much; that’s why they were caught off guard," the seasoned Inspector analyzed confidently, "If you ask me, they were too careless. There are players in the Resistance Army, and you can’t rule out the possibility of one or two geniuses; it’s not surprising if someone brought back something good from other districts."
"Since the Rotating Aromatherapy is so effective, why not equip the Inspectors with it?" Han Cong couldn’t help asking. "It’s much cheaper than any laser cannon. If we had that kind of disruptor, not that many Inspectors would have died, right?"
"What are you dreaming about? That’s only for people who go to the Eastern District," the seasoned Inspector said, concealing his envy before adding, "But you still have a chance."
"Is it about Inspector training?" Xu Huo asked. "I’ve heard others mention it."
"You certainly have your ear to the ground. This is supposed to be insider info; newcomers generally don’t know about it." The seasoned Inspector glanced at him.
Xu Huo smiled and said nothing.
This wasn’t really insider info; one could glimpse traces of it from past records in the Supervision Department.
The turnover rate in the Supervision Department was too high, not merely because of recent deaths. There were always recruitment notices, and these were also announced in the districts under the Supervision Department’s jurisdiction. However, Inspectors cannot take up duty where they live, so the branch Inspectors, like Xu Huo, always come from other places.
Not everyone could have been killed, and it was common knowledge that the only promotion path for Inspectors led to the Eastern District.
But there’s no way the Eastern District would accept so many people. Participating in training as "prospective Eastern District residents" seemed more plausible. As to whether participants stay in the Eastern District or leave afterward, that’s another story; they wouldn’t return to their original branch.
From internal duty records in the Supervision Department, someone like Li Song hadn’t left here for at least two to three years. Were they unselected?
Not necessarily.
So, whether genuine Inspectors or players among them, a portion would definitely enter the Eastern District.
The Supervision Department and the Eastern District were well aware of this.
"If you pass the training, can you stay and work in the Eastern District?" Han Cong promptly asked.
"Young folks these days have plenty of opportunities," the seasoned Inspector said, patting his shoulder with a smile. "If you ever make it to the Eastern District, don’t forget your old colleagues here."
Feeling embarrassed by his words, Han Cong asked more about the training, looking very eager.
On the other hand, Xu Huo, who seemed to know a bit of the inside story, didn’t say much more.
However, others saw his attitude as having "connections," attracting envy from some.
