Chapter 29: A Fearful Night
On a quiet and lonely night, Nathan could only hear the wind howling outside, making the zinc roof rattle loudly. Inside the room, he could only hear his own sobs.
He kept trying to listen carefully for any shouting outside. Maybe they were hurting Nael. But he heard nothing. He grew increasingly frustrated.
Time passed so slowly. His body was tired, and the restraints on his hands and feet made him stiff and sore.
After an agonizing silence, he didn’t know how long, he finally heard footsteps. They sounded like heavy boots scraping against the tiles.
Nathan immediately tensed up and held his breath. His heart began to beat rapidly again. Were the kidnappers back? Would they take him this time?
He tried to move to the corner of the room when the door opened. A tall, sturdy figure entered, wearing a thick jacket. He didn’t look like the kidnappers. Nathan squinted, trying to see clearly in the dim light.
As the figure got closer, his eyes widened completely.
"Malvin...?" he said in a choked voice, unable to believe the man was there. He hoped he wasn’t dreaming.
Malvin smiled, his entrance somehow accompanied by dramatic smoke—no one knew from where—with a calm and serious expression, as if he had just defeated hundreds of soldiers on the battlefield.
He raised a finger to his lips, signaling Nathan to be quiet.
"Shh. I came to save you," he said with his signature calm smile.
Nathan didn’t know he could ever be this happy to see another human being, especially his hated brother. He kept staring at Malvin as the man untied his hands and feet, trying to convince himself he wasn’t dreaming. That he really had another chance to live.
Malvin looked at Nathan, who was staring at him like a frightened puppy. He hugged him tightly. "It’s okay. You’re safe now."
Nathan let Malvin hug him. Now he couldn’t hold back his tears. He felt relieved, touched, and still had a bit of fear lingering in his chest.
Malvin was a little surprised Nathan would let him hug him. The boy must have been really scared. He couldn’t stand seeing his brother cry like that, so he hugged him even tighter.
"It’s okay. Everything will be okay. Don’t cry..."
Nathan suddenly remembered Nael. He pulled away from Malvin’s embrace and cried out, "Nael! They took Nael! They said they wanted to take his eyes! Please save him!"
Nathan panicked, immediately standing up, afraid Nael had already been killed.
"Yes, yes... we’ll look for Nael together. But you have to calm down first," Malvin said with a calmness that made Nathan impatient.
Nathan didn’t know what to do. He was too panicked and scared, and he broke down again without realizing it. His body trembled at the thought that Nael might already be dead.
He cried again in front of Malvin, desperate. "Please save that kid,
huhu
~~~"
"Yes... We’ll go now... okay..." Malvin tried to calm his brother down, wanting so badly to say that Nael was fine, but he couldn’t mess up the plan.
Nathan nodded. His tough attitude completely melted away. That made Malvin find it adorable.
"They’re really evil! Be careful," Nathan whispered, walking behind Malvin.
Malvin smiled, feeling Nathan’s tight grip on his arm.
They walked out slowly. In front of them was a yard surrounded by a zinc fence. Snow was still falling, adding to the thick layer on the ground.
Nathan looked around, completely unfamiliar with the place. Where had they taken Nael? His eyes immediately focused on a larger building not far away.
It looked like an abandoned farmhouse. The place they had been in seemed to be a warehouse.
The closer they got to the house, the tighter Nathan’s grip on Malvin’s hand became, afraid the man would get hurt with every step. He respected Malvin even more seeing how calm he was at a time like this.
Finally, they reached a wooden door that looked damaged by termites. Malvin knocked, making Nathan tense up.
"You’re just going in? Without a weapon?" he whispered.
"It’s okay. Let’s see if we can negotiate with them. Alexander will be here soon, so there shouldn’t be any problems," Malvin said.
"But what if they’ve already killed Nael?" Nathan said, trying to hold back the tightness in his chest.
Before Malvin could answer, the door opened. Nathan immediately tensed when he saw the man who had carried Nael earlier.
"Finally, you’re here. I was just about to dissect the boy," the man said with a nasty laugh.
Nathan held Malvin’s hand tightly. He couldn’t focus on what Malvin was saying; he just prayed Nael was okay.
The man opened the door wider.
Nathan froze.
Nael was inside. Still tied up. Still intact. Still... alive.
Instead of feeling relieved, Nathan burst into tears. "NAEL!!"
His voice startled everyone. Nael, still crying on a cot and tied up, turned his head.
"Nathan!! Malvin!!" he shouted, then cried even harder.
Nathan looked at Nael from head to toe. Without realizing it, he breathed a sigh of relief.
Nael was still intact.
Trying to reassure him, he asked, "Are you okay? Are your kidneys still there?"
Nael nodded, afraid to speak when he saw the kidnappers standing there, alert.
A man approached Malvin. "Where’s the money?"
Malvin smiled. He was a terrible actor, but his task would soon be over. "Let the boy go, then I’ll show you the money."
Nathan was anxious because he didn’t see Malvin carrying a suitcase or anything that looked like money. He prayed the kidnappers wouldn’t realize Malvin was lying and kill Nael.
He prayed hard as they untied Nael, though they still held him tightly.
"Let him go, give him to me," Malvin said.
"The money," the man repeated with an indifferent expression.
Nathan was too focused on Nael to notice what was happening. Suddenly, a fight broke out between Malvin and another man.
’Damn! What is happening now?!’
Nathan started trembling violently again.
