Chapter 46: The Red Hair Boy
Nathan turned to see where the voice was coming from. They had just entered a ballroom that seemed to be specifically designed for events like this, and he saw a group of teens his age. They all had different hair colors.
Nathan focused on the young man who was currently staring at him with a mischievous grin. The young man had red hair and light brown eyes. Handsome, with a few freckles on his face.
He knew that this young man was the one who had just said he was an unlucky child.
Nathan stared intently at the boy, then at the other children there. They immediately fell silent, pretending not to see him.
He ignored them and kept walking.
The atmosphere was lively, but quiet. Nathan looked at the room filled with guests he didn’t know, dressed in impressive clothes. The sound of the violin and piano drowned out the conversations.
Nathan was now walking beside Leo. When he arrived, several pairs of eyes immediately focused on them and stopped what they were doing.
But when Alexander stepped inside, taking his place beside Nathan, heads turned politely toward them. They immediately greeted them with the friendliness of business associates rather than family.
Nathan stopped every time Alexander greeted them and made small talk. He saw that his other siblings had scattered and disappeared from view. He found Roger laughing at the front door with a young man.
Nael, where is that boy?
He felt out of place. Moreover, the stares of the people around him made him even more uncomfortable. He wanted to walk to the end of the room, find a spot to hide, but Alexander’s hand held him back.
The man gently pulled him to stand beside him. Then he spoke to the couple in front of him. The woman, who looked to be almost half a century old, smiled broadly with a serene expression.
"Nathan, this is Aunt Amber," Alexander introduced.
Hearing that name, Nathan immediately remembered the woman in the photo album. Was this woman his twin aunt?
"You must have had a hard time, but thankfully it’s all over now. You can relax," Amber said, gently rubbing Nathan’s arm.
A woman who looked almost identical approached and greeted him cheerfully.
"Hi, you’re Nathan, right? We heard you were coming tonight. Welcome, sweetheart," the woman said.
Before Nathan could speak, the woman had already taken his hand. "Call me Lily. You don’t need to be shy around me. I’ve been in your position, and you know, I still can’t believe it even now," the woman laughed.
Nathan just smiled bitterly. He didn’t know how Lily could be so cheerful after what had happened to her.
Lily heard the curious children calling Nathan a cursed, and she looked at Nathan with a big smile.
"You don’t need to care about other people. You can’t choose your family; we are bound by blood without our consent. But you can control how you respond to them. I felt the same way when I first arrived. They kept saying I was bad luck, and I told them, ’It’s your family that’s unlucky, and because of me, you survived!’" Lily said with such a funny expression that Nathan couldn’t keep his stiff face.
Nathan smiled slightly. He kept listening to Lily’s story and unconsciously replied and smiled from time to time. Amber added her own comments, making the conversation lively.
Alexander also knew how to make the conversation more interesting. Soon, several people came and joined in, creating a small crowd in the middle of the ballroom.
From those introductions and brief conversations, Nathan was able to conclude a few things.
The Salazar family was enormous. Antonio had three siblings, but only he and his brother, Baron, remained.
Antonio had four children. His sister, Annemarie, died young. His brother Baron, who had two children. And Emanuel, who died in his thirties and had one child.
And those children had many children of their own. That was why the room was now full of people with their partners as well. Although Nathan was sure there weren’t a hundred people, it was still a lot in his eyes, and he was overwhelmed trying to remember all their names.
Among them all, his parents were not present. Deep in his heart, Nathan also wanted to meet them.
Nathan tried not to look overwhelmed. Thanks to Amber and Lily, he was able to blend in more naturally and enjoy himself.
Even so, some people were still busy with their own conversations, but they subtly turned to get a glimpse of him.
Alexander slowed down, speaking quietly so only Nathan could hear. "Still fine?"
"I’m not five," Nathan muttered, but he appreciated the small gesture. He didn’t know what he would do without Alexander there.
And from what he had observed, his grandfather was highly respected in the large family. It was evident from how they treated Alexander and his siblings.
Baron Salazar, Antonio’s younger brother, approached with a broad smile.
"Welcome home, boy. It’s good to finally meet you." His tone was simple, not dramatic, and somehow that made it easier to accept.
Nathan stared intently at the old man. His face resembled Antonio’s but was plumper and carried a friendly smile. His laugh was elegant but shook the room. The man seemed pleasant.
Nathan also met Julian, the only son of Emanuel, Antonio’s youngest brother who had passed away. At first glance, Nathan could tell that the tall, thin man was unfriendly.
The man had light brown hair, and next to him stood a pale-skinned woman with red hair, who immediately started talking when they made eye contact.
Unlike Lily, who was talkative but made you want to get closer, this woman was the opposite. Every sentence she uttered ended with her comparing Dante’s children to herself.
Julian and Amanda, the red-haired woman, had five children. When they introduced one of them, Nathan immediately frowned.
Because the annoying red-haired boy earlier turned out to be their son. And his name was Francis Salazar.
