(Alaric’s POV)
Standing outside 704, my brows wrinkled into a frown. The door was ajar, and the custodians alongside the sanitisation staff were busy clearing up and disinfecting the room. I double checked the numerical signs displayed on the plate, which read 7-0-4.
Knowing how excellent my memory is, there is no way I will be getting the room number incorrect. ’Did that human give me the wrong room number, then?’ It definitely has to do with the person serving at the reception desk. ’Utterly careless and negligent~ .... Tskkk ... truly despicable.
As I was busy inside my head, one of the cleaning staff noticed me and asked, "Sir, what can I~ ... help you with?"
"Didn’t this room get assigned to the person named Fabian Stephens?" I asked, my face scrunched.
I noticed a subtle shift in his expression, but it disappeared as quickly as it appeared. He replied with a strained smile, "Sir, Mr. Stephens has already been discharged."
"Discharged," I remarked and looked at him. I could clearly see him shuddering under my gaze, "Did he? When did that happen?"
"He~ .... He~ ...." The person stammered and was about to open his mouth when someone interrupted him, "Travis~ .... What are you doing with cleaners? Go to the nurse station, now." The voice was sharp and blunt.
The intruder then turned to me, "Sir~ .... Who are you looking for?" Her lips displayed a professional smile. Even under my gaze, she didn’t seem to flinch. ’Interesting.’
"Fabian Stephens," I stated calmly while gauging her reaction.
Unlike the previous one, she remained calm and collected, hearing that guy’s name, which told me she was a person with authority here, "Sir~ ... The guardian of Mr. Stephens has discharged him."
"What guardian? When did this happen?" I pried some more, my eyes drifted towards the ID badge hung on her neck.
Her smile, it remained intact. She answered, her voice came out without any hitch, "Around fifteen minutes ago, someone named Ms. Yelena Yates signed his discharge papers. May I know what is your relationship with Mr. Stephens?"
Hearing the guardian’s name, a surge of relief washed over me, even though I didn’t know the cause or the reason. But I felt a calm settle inside my chest.
Now that he was already discharged meant he was no longer a patient, and I didn’t need to make any visit.
Good for me. Wasting time here was purposeless anyway, and I don’t do needless shit.
I, languidly, withdrew from the room. As I neared the one with the Head Nurse badge, glancing her way, I commented, "Mr. Stephens~ .... I have no acquaintance with the likes of him."
The look of confusion and bewilderment was evident in her eyes, but do I care? Absolutely not. So, I just walked past her casually. But only after taking three steps, my damn foolish wolf blurted out, "By the way, did Yelena Yates come alone or was there someone else accompanying her?"
"Ms. Yates~ ... she had company, though I don’t know the other person’s name. She seems to be her friend," she told me.
I nodded and made my way out of the scene completely, scolding Alex, ’Can’t you hold your horses for once?’
’What can I even ask a general question now?’ Alex rebuked. As we bickered while I walked at some distance, the muffled voice of those inside the room reached my ears, "Head Nurse Lila, will it be really alright? That girl, Ms. Yates, seems like she will go through with her threat. If the words get out~ .... not just Travis’s job will be terminated, but our entire department, as well as the hospital’s reputation, will be dragged down."
The term ’threat’ caught my antenna.
"I have already informed about the matter to the higher ups. They will do as they seem fit. As for Travis, you shouldn’t worry about him. Just focus on your work," it’s the voice of the head nurse, Lila Black.
The sudden piece of information piqued my interest, my steps halted instinctively as I turned around. That nurse was heading to the other side. I followed and stopped her, "Wait, what did you just say? REPEAT IT." I commanded.
She seemed genuinely startled to see me. Her eyes darting nervously, but her answer came out swift and without hesitation, as if reflexively, "Sir, I don’t know what you are talking about."
Rubbing my temples, I sneered in her face, "Answer me while I am being polite. Or do you want to see the flip side of the coin that badly, huhh? I am pretty sure neither you nor this hospital would like that to happen." I stated coolly.
Her mask of calmness cracked, her eyes widened in horror. I, Alaric Everests, wasn’t the one to make empty threats, that’s not my thing. And I made sure it reflected from my words.
Just as I was expecting, the dart had hit the mark.
The nurse fumbled with her words, "Sir~ .... I~ .... It’s~ .... You see~ ...." She was all over the place.
"What are you, a newborn? Forgot to talk, umm? Should I teach you then?" I spoke, giving her a lazy death stare.
"Sir, you see, what happened is that. Mr. Stephens~ .... He left the hospital without being discharged. When Ms. Yates and her friend arrived and found no one in his room, they told us. We made a search for him all around the hospital’s vicinity and found that he left on his own accord. The CCTV showed that he, himself, onboarded a cab and went away," she finished, trying to defend the hospital as well as sound reasonable.
"Show me the footage," I ordered.
"Sir~ ... that’s not how things work in our hospital," that human tried to stay her ground. But did she have a chance to go against me, hahh~ .... definitely not.
"You don’t seem to understand the situation here. Head. Nurse. Lila. Black. There can be severe consequences for defying me," a smooth yet chilling smirk crept on my lips.
