Chapter 112: A ring of bodyguards
Luca’s palm pressed gently onto the back of Sara’s head. "I’m fine, Sara. Please calm down," he said in a soft, soothing tone. "I am sorry that you had to see all this. Everything is fine now. You and I are safe."
Sara sniffled before pulling away. She furiously wiped the tears from her eyes. "What if he had shot you?"
"Well, I’m trained for situations like this," Luca stated. "We will be leaving shortly from this place. And Sara, you need to understand something: he didn’t come to harm me, but you," he revealed.
Suddenly, the room was filled with the loud ringing of a phone while Luca’s own phone was buzzing persistently inside the pocket of his trousers.
Sara quickly answered the call, which was from Vinni.
"How is Luca?" Vinni asked in a panicked voice from the other side. "We were informed that firing occurred at a hotel where you both are staying," she said breathlessly. "Did he get heavily injured? And what about you? Are you fine? Michael and I are coming over there immediately!"
Since Sara had instinctively put the phone on speaker, Luca quickly answered. "Don’t come here, Mom. I’m fine. Sara and I will be returning today," he instructed firmly. "Don’t listen to the news. I’ll be coming home straight with Sara. I got a small cut on my arm, but the doctor has already dressed it. So, there’s nothing to worry about."
Meanwhile, Sara kept staring at him, utterly bewildered. She was unable to comprehend the unsettling calm on his face, especially after being attacked by a professional shooter.
"Alright," Vinni said, sounding slightly mollified but still agitated. "Your father is already talking to the police. Sara and you will be airlifted back home," she added, relaying Michael’s decision.
"Tell Dad not to do it," Luca stated, his voice tight with frustration at the lack of control. "I already have an arrangement in my mind. You don’t have to trouble people for this."
Suddenly, Michael had snatched the phone from his wife. "Luca, your safety can’t be compromised, nor Sara’s," he pronounced, his voice firm and commanding. "I’ve already talked with the commissioner. You and Sara are returning in a chopper." He gave out his final, non-negotiable decision.
Luca knew better than to argue when his father used that tone. "Okay," he conceded, and hung up the call.
Pressing his fingers to the temple of his forehead in exhaustion, he immediately dialed Remo, who answered instantly.
"Drive fast," Remo instructed his own driver, assuming Luca needed him there immediately.
"Don’t come here," Luca commanded. "Sara and I will be airlifted. Instead, be ready with all the information on the shooter. Someone hired him to harm Sara." Sensing his wife’s distressed presence behind him, he ended the security conversation abruptly. "Rest, I’ll talk to you later."
"How could you be so calm?" Sara asked as she observed his unsettling control after a near-death experience.
"I may look calm, but inside I’m burning with rage," Luca admitted, his voice hardening slightly. "Whoever the fuck planned this is going to..." He paused, cutting himself off, unwilling to say the word ’kill’ in front of her, knowing she despised his shadow work managing the mafia business.
"Luca, I don’t understand you sometimes," Sara said, shaking her head. "I—I thought something terrible would happen to you because of me. I felt so vulnerable. The gun was right there beside me, but I couldn’t even lift it." Tears began flowing freely from her eyes again.
"Don’t cry," Luca soothed, his touch gentle. "Anyone in your situation would be scared. And your hands aren’t meant to lift a weapon. You are scared of such things, and that’s alright." He poured water for her in a glass and forwarded it to her.
"Drink it and relax. Okay?" Luca rested his comforting hand on her shoulder, urging her to compose herself.
Just as he did, a sharp knock occurred on the door. He went to open the door and found two uniformed police officers standing in front of him.
"Mr. Luca, as per the orders from the commissioner, we are here to escort you and your wife. Please pack your stuff because the chopper will arrive shortly. It will land at the terrace of the hotel, so make sure to come with your wife to that location," one of them informed him.
"Sure. Thank you," Luca replied with a polite smile.
He went back into the suite and saw that Sara had not touched the glass of water. Instead, she was already pulling the suitcases out of the cupboard and efficiently packing the clothes they had left scattered outside.
As Sara finished the work, she zipped the case and gazed at Luca, then specifically at his bandaged arm. "You’re not doing anything until this wound completely heals," she stated sternly, making it a clear, non-negotiable demand.
"Your wish is my command," Luca replied, smiling genuinely, recognizing the love and concern behind her ultimatum.
He reached out to grab the handle of the rolling trolley bag, but Sara slapped his hand lightly.
"Just follow me outside," she said, giving him a look that clearly stated his injured arm was off-duty.
Luca nodded, conceding to her authority, but his eyes quickly scanned the luxurious suite one last time to ensure they hadn’t left anything crucial behind. As they stepped out of the suite, they surrendered the keycard to the waiting hotel staff. One of the staff members immediately took the bags from Sara, moving ahead of them toward the elevator.
They both followed the man into the elevator, which swiftly took them to the top floor. Stepping out, they ascended the final flight of stairs and were immediately met with the loud, deafening noise of the incoming chopper blades.
Sara had Luca’s long coat draped over her arm. She turned to drape it around his shoulders, concerned for his wound, but he stopped her. Instead, he gently took the coat and placed it around her shoulders, pulling her close to his body, shielding her from the wind and the noise.
"Sheesh! What are you doing?" Her voice was swallowed entirely by the roar of the helicopter, rendering it inaudible to him.
"I’m glad you’re not hurt, Sara," Luca said, his voice forced loud against the noise. He lowered his head and pressed his lips firmly onto hers, a final kiss of pure relief.
Sara stopped, her eyes wide with momentary confusion, her body going stiff from the sudden, intense kiss amidst the chaos. After a beat, her shoulders relaxed, and she kissed him back.
They withdrew, and Sara tucked strands of loose hair behind her ear, fighting against the strong wind created by the rotating chopper blades.
One of the officers approached them, signaling firmly that they should board the chopper immediately. Luca held Sara’s hand tightly, leading her toward the aircraft. He helped her settle into the seat first, and she quickly put on the large, bulky safety earcaps given by the second pilot. Luca sat down beside her, securing his own harness, as the two officers filed in behind them.
Sara’s breath hitched in her throat. It was her first time riding a chopper.
Her hand instinctively moved to Luca’s, seeking grip. He smiled, understanding her silent need for reassurance, and leaned his head close to hers.
"Since we are having this unexpected ride, why don’t you try to enjoy it a bit?" Luca suggested gently, raising his voice to be heard over the engine whine. "Look out the window, how beautiful the world looks from up here."
"How could you even enjoy anything in such a frightening situation?" Sara murmured in a complaining tone, though she couldn’t help but look outside.
As the chopper lifted rapidly, a soft, involuntary smile carved onto her lips, mesmerized by the shrinking landscape of La Alpujarra. She tilted her head back from the window and found Luca’s face inches from hers, his expression warm and entirely focused on her.
She then gazed briefly at the two officers, who were thankfully looking away from them, respecting their privacy.
’How can Luca be so calm?’
she again thought, the question echoing the unsettling control he maintained.
’What if the bullet had struck him? He shielded me, not caring for his own life.’
While looking outside at the rapidly receding mountain landscape, she kept having profound thoughts she hadn’t allowed herself to entertain in a long time regarding Luca.
But one thing she was absolutely, irrevocably sure about was that Luca loved her more than she could even imagine. She had been a fool to believe that he didn’t care or that his feelings were shallow. After today’s terrifying incident, witnessing his protective instinct and selfless action, she was completely certain of his deep, true feelings for her.
The ride came to an end after an hour. It gently settled onto the helipad, and slowly, the deafening noise of the chopper blades drained away.
As they both stepped out, they were immediately ushered toward a waiting car, which was conspicuously surrounded by a ring of bodyguards. Sara was quite intrigued, perhaps even intimidated, to see the extent of the security detail. But then, she reminded herself. Luca was such an influential and powerful figure that this level of security was necessary, especially now.
"Yes, both Sir and Madam have entered the car," Sara heard one of the bodyguards speak discreetly into a communication device before the car swiftly drove away, heading straight for the De Augustino estate.
Sara glanced at Luca, who was looking at her only as if he was worried for her.
