Chapter 78: Wherever he’s run off
Diego burst into the club’s private lounge, his face was darkened with fury. The heavy velvet curtain swished closed behind him, muffling the distant throb of the music.
Ryan, who had been nursing a drink by the deep leather sofa, sprang to his feet, his own composure visibly fraying.
"Why did you drag me here with such a frantic call?" he demanded. "And what in God’s name was that spectacle Sara made? I watched her dismantle the entire party, Diego. You were supposed to be coronated the heir tonight! I thought the path was clear. I bet you never anticipated this move. And for them to actually use the fucking part of that . I didn’t think they had the guts."
Diego didn’t reply immediately. He crossed the room in three strides, grabbed a crystal tumbler of liquor from the nearest side table, and chugged its contents in one desperate, burning gulp. He slammed the glass down, the sharp clink echoing in the sudden silence, and ran a shaking hand through his styled hair.
"Ryan," he finally managed, "she spoke with confidence. It wasn’t a bluff. I think she has genuinely unearthed something that goes beyond that old ." He locked eyes with his friend, the fear in them cold and sharp. "Listen to me: if Luca moves to indict me tomorrow, he won’t stop there. He’s going to ensure he drags you down with me."
"But I did nothing," Ryan stated.
"I made you the financial manager, remember?" Diego stated.
"Yeah, but I never did anything wrong in the company. You know this well," Ryan affirmed. "And why the fuck did you let the loose ends to be caught by them. Sara wasn’t that sharp, but Luca is. He did send an investigation team within the company. God knows what he has collected against you."
Diego snickered. "I have a way to stop all of this. This was the best chance to trap Sara entirely. But this Luca suddenly entered the game, ruining everything for me." He then slumped down on the lounge, realizing he was going to see the prison this time.
"I have an idea," Ryan said, lowered himself just next to him.
"What?"
"Ask your father to beg Sara to stop all of this," Ryan stated.
"My stepfather will not hear me. You think I rushed here for having fun. I am trapped. And my stepfather will never go to Sara and beg her to stop this," Diego said with a confident tone. He knew his stepfather wouldn’t save him this time.
"Your father will do it because this time it’s about the reputation of the Falcone Family. Do you think he will let the world know his family people did such a thing? And seriously, you committed all these frauds again. How could you make the same mistake again? How exactly did you do it? How did you trap Sara?" Ryan pressed.
"Look, I didn’t trap Sara. It wasn’t my doing. But yes, in this one month I felt it was the perfect opportunity to bring something under me. My dad never even acknowledged me. For him, Sara was always everything. I was seven when mother decided to remarry. Since that age I’m seeing Sara being given everything by Dad. While I have to wait for my turn as if I will get them in alms."
Diego’s brows furrowed together as the pain of being a neglect in the house started appearing in his head.
"You should not have done it, Diego. Luca will pin the entire blame on you. You don’t know that guy. I have found out some serious stuff about him. He’s quite dangerous. Just go to Sara yourself and ask for an apology," Ryan suggested to him.
"I hate her. She’s the reason of my miserable life," Diego muttered, pulling the alcohol bottle in his way. He filled the empty glass and again began drinking.

"Adam, listen to me. Sara is ruining this family from the inside out. Diego, whatever his flaws, would not do anything that would genuinely bring us all down again. You have to believe me!" Marcella pleaded.
Adam stood behind his mahogany desk. He didn’t even look at her. "Don’t become his lawyer again, Marcella," he growled. "Luca’s secretary left a file on my desk earlier. And I saw the dates. He had started the same schemes again, escalating them in just the last month."
He slammed his fist onto the wood, making the crystal decanters jump. "I gave him his chance after the last debacle. I forgave him then. Do you honestly think I will offer absolution this time? Never. You will do better to call him, wherever he’s run off to, and tell him to be here before the clock hit nine."
Just then, Katherine entered the room, holding her cane.
"You will throw Diego out of this house, Adam," she stated. "I will not let his greed destroy our name."
"No!" Marcella shrieked as she stepped forward.
"Diego should know what it means to work hard. You didn’t forgive Sara once and abandoned her. Diego deserves even worst," Katherine continued, ignoring Marcella.
"I know, Mother, what I have to do. Sara didn’t either do anything good. Did you see what she did earlier? She’s lost her mind too. None of my kids understand the worth of this company. So, don’t either preach about Sara. Diego will definitely be punished this time," Adam declared, glancing at Marcella again.
"Call him. I want him home," Adam stated.
Marcella gulped and walked out of the study of her husband.
Katherine tilted her head, checking if Marcella was completely out of the room.
"If Sara hadn’t intervened tonight, you would have declared Diego as the heir of this family," Katherine said. "Sara will bring the company to you. So, don’t give her a cold shoulder. The one you should be worried of is Marcella and her kids. I’ve been telling this you for years," she added.
"Mother, I love Marcella. That’s why I married her. When Sara’s mother ran away, leaving her behind, I was all alone. Marcella gave me the support I needed. So, don’t talk negative about her. As for Diego, I know what I have to do," Adam stated with a stern tone.
