Chapter 80: Fix things with force
Luca strode into the dining room, and spotted Sara already seated at the small table, bathed in the soft morning light.
"Why did you abandon the room without even handing me a towel?" he complained, dropping into a chair across from her. He arched a brow with a teasing, possessive gleam in his eyes. "Last night, my dear, we had the sweetest—"
"Luca, don’t."
Sara cut him off. She slowly lifted a piece of toast, a toasted bread slathered with olive oil and tomato, to her lips.
The sudden shift in her demeanor made him genuinely pause. "What has gotten into you suddenly? I thought everything was going well between us," he said, the genuine confusion pushing past his playful facade.
She took a small bite of the bread and chewed it well before speaking,
"Yes, it has been going well," Sara stated. "But I didn’t wish to fall for your cheap trick. Let’s not talk while eating." She was concerned about the meeting she had to attend later.
Luca observed her while eating from his own plate.
Luca stared across the table, his mind racing. ’Why is she acting so cold? Did I make any mistake?’ he worried. The intimacy they shared last night felt suddenly fragile, tainted by her disdain. ’Maybe I should give her a gift. But then, she isn’t either moved by them. Should I ask Remo for advice? He understands women well,’ he concluded, the need for a consultation overriding his pride.
Meanwhile, Sara continued to eat. ’Frida must be panicked after what I said last night. But why hasn’t she made any move so far? She didn’t try to contact me.’
The two of them finished the meal in heavy silence. As Sara took a final sip of coffee, Luca finally pushed his chair back, excusing himself from the table. Jonathan had already signaled the servants, who swiftly moved in to clean the table.
Luca didn’t make it far. He stopped right outside, near the swimming pool, and immediately called Remo. After a few rings, Remo answered with a sleepy grunt.
"Mm?"
"Wake up!" Luca snapped, pacing the tiled edge of the pool.
"What happened?" Remo mumbled, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. "It’s only eight in the morning. What are you intending to do?" he muttered, already sliding back under the sheets of his hotel room bed.
"Tell me what does women like? Other than dresses or jewelry," Luca stated with impatience. "Sara is hard to impress."
Remo suddenly threw his head back, his eyes opening wide in genuine surprise. "Weren’t you uninterested in her? You married her because of some business, I think. Then, why do you want to even know what will impress her?" he mused. By now, the sleepiness was completely gone from his eyes.
Luca ran a hand over his nape, rubbing the tense muscles there. "Changes of plan. I ended up confessing my love to her. But she doesn’t believe any of my words."
"You did what?" Remo practically shouted into the phone. "Were you lying to me all this time?" His voice rose.
"Remo, it’s not the time to act surprised," Luca shot back, clearly irritated. "Just tell me something that will make Sara happy. She wasn’t even happy during our honeymoon. Only a few times, but mostly she was distracted by the trouble of her family caused her," he explained, frustration evident in his voice.
Remo sighed. "We’re talking about Sara, Luca. She’s not easy to please. Maybe gift her some business-related book. She’ll be far happier to have it than some usual stuff that others like," he advised.
"No. That’s not a nice idea," Luca instantly refused.
"Wait a minute. How did you confess to her? Did you surprise her with roses all around? I’m sure you did," Remo murmured, picturing the grand gesture Luca was usually capable of arranging.
"I didn’t," Luca said simply.
Remo was stunned. He sat bolt upright in the hotel bed, running his fingers through his hair. "Wait! You told her your feelings just like that?"
"Yeah. We both know each other since we were kids, and I don’t think Sara even likes proposals like that." Luca scrubbed his nape again, sighing. "Not to mention, things happened, and in the heat of the moment, I spilled the secret that I buried, including that I’m a mafia," he confessed.
"Wow! And you want Sara to love you back," Remo said. "I remember the way you rejected her. She was crying the entire day and disappeared from the college then, saying she was doing an internship."
Remo’s tone sharpened with a clear warning. "You better wait for her to open up to you. Don’t be some horny freak trying to fix things with force."
That cut deep. Luca’s pride flared, his patience snapping.
"I am not like you," Luca snapped as he gripped his phone.
"Who are you yelling at?" Sara’s voice reached his ears.
Luca quickly looked away from the pool, instinctively pressing the phone closer to his mouth. "I’ll talk to you later," he whispered to Remo, cutting the call before his friend could make another fatal remark. He hung up and turned to Sara, offering a casual shrug.
"It was just some employee," he lied smoothly, tucking the phone into his trouser pocket.
Sara stared at him for a moment, her suspicion clear, before speaking. "Dad called me. I will be going home. You can go to work by yourself."
"I’ll come with you," Luca offered immediately, wanting to understand why her father had called and unwilling to let her slip away while their issues were unresolved.
"No," Sara stated. "You should focus on your work, too. I can drive a car, so I’ll be taking one."
"Fine. Just call me if anything happens," Luca said as he walked to her.
"I will," Sara assured.
"Are you upset with me?" Luca asked.
"No," Sara refused.
The response made him smile. He hugged her suddenly, inhaling the fragrance of her soft perfume. She moved her hands to his back, hugging him too.
As they pulled away, she tucked her hair behind her ears. "I-I will leave first. See you later," she added and left his sight.
"I think I know what I’ve to do," Luca mumbled to herself with a grin.
