Chapter 90: To hold the inheritance
"Jonathan, shall we talk more about your young master?" Sara asked, stopping suddenly in the garden path.
Earlier, after Luca had left abruptly, Sara had quickly decided to execute her plan: she needed to find out what she had missed in Luca’s life that had forced him to become a mafia. Though she knew it was his grandfather’s influence, she felt there was something more.
She had already taken proactive steps, inviting Remo and Marco home for dinner and sending Luca a list of items she needed, asking him to purchase them, a move to keep him outside of the house.
"Pardon me, Madam? What exactly do you want to learn about the young master?" Jonathan asked, turning to face her with a confused expression. He was clearly unsure about discussing Luca’s private life.
"Since when has he been in the business of the mafia?" Sara asked straightforwardly, her voice low but piercing. "Did it happen right after his grandfather died, or is it even before that?"
When Jonathan hesitated, clearly uncomfortable with the dangerous subject, Sara pressed him gently. "Don’t you want Luca to stay safe? Do you want him to hurl guns at people? I know he does it, but when and how? I am just unaware of that," she murmured.
Jonathan began, rubbing his hands together nervously. "Madam, the young master was into it from a very young age." He looked away, confirming her fears. "When Sir Julian was alive, he would keep Young Master Luca under his shade. Because the young master’s parents were essentially absent from his life in the initial years of his childhood, he spent most of his time with his grandfather."
He sighed, shaking his head. "Pulling him out of that business is almost impossible. His parents tried a lot and even decided to keep him away from the inheritance. But somehow, the young master claimed it all."
"Through bloodshed?" Sara frowned, dreading the answer.
"No. Young Master Luca did not go that far," Jonathan replied quickly, easing her deepest fear. "But he was brutal to everyone who opposed him. Well, I am just a servant in this household, so my opinions shouldn’t matter."
"Your opinions matter. Say it," Sara insisted. "What do you think about that event? His claim to the inheritance?"
Jonathan gathered his courage and offered his honest views. "I think Young Master Luca deserves to hold the inheritance. When Sir Julian was sick, no one was by his side, not even his son and daughters. Only his one grandson was beside him, despite the crucial college entrance exams that were right on the way." He paused, looking genuinely worried. "But yes, I think Young Master Luca should think about his safety. And now, he is married, so he must think of you as well."
"I had decided to let him do whatever he wanted in his life. However, I don’t want him to live a life where threat is looming over his head all the time," Sara revealed, the concern for Luca clear in her voice. "Whatever we talked about today, let’s not share it with Luca."
"Of course, Madam," Jonathan agreed with a respectful smile.
"Also, I believe he has spies too," Sara stated, frowning slightly as she recalled the unnerving speed with which Luca had found out about her private meeting with Vinni.
"Yes, he does. But I’m not aware of who they are," Jonathan replied honestly.
"It’s okay. I’ll find them out soon," Sara stated with a newfound resolve. "Thanks. You can resume your work." With that, she turned and walked back inside the mansion.
"I just wanted a short break from everything, Grandma," Sara replied, sighing. "You must have found out that I no longer have any relationship with the Falcone Family. I helped Diego for Dad as my last favor on him," she asserted.
"Yes, I heard. But something more happened. Luca was here with his friend, carrying a gun," Katherine stated. "Though he made them teach a good lesson, having a gun in his hand was the last thing I ever imagined."
"What did he do there, Grandma?" Sara asked, immediately worried, her attention now fully captured by the severity of the situation.
"I was in the hospital for my monthly checkup," Katherine explained, detailing the distressing events. "When I returned, the servants told me the incident here. Luca and his one friend threatened Diego with his mother’s life. Then, he pointed the gun at Diego, asking him to tell the truth who trapped you and brought Falcone Industries to the brink of bankruptcy. Frida was forced to tell the truth. She confessed that she made you sign the papers when you were drunk, Sara."
Katherine’s voice grew desperate. "Though the truth is out, and your father is ready to take action, what shocked me is why Luca has a gun. Sara, do you know anything about this? I don’t want to believe what a servant just told me, so I’m asking you."
Sara hesitated for a moment, weighing the consequences of sharing the full truth, but decided her grandmother needed to understand the scope of the danger and Luca’s power. "Grandma, he is a mafia leader. Even I found out about it not long ago," she confessed softly.
Katherine’s heart sank in shock, the phone shaking slightly in her hand. "Oh, Sara," she whispered, her voice laced with disappointment and fear. "How could he be the one? I always thought he was a gentle soul with such an upright personality."
"Grandma, I don’t think he did anything wrong there," Sara asserted, defending Luca’s actions despite the method. "At least, Frida spoke the truth. You need not worry about me. I am safe here." Her worry shifted immediately back to her grandmother. "But I do want you to come to me."
"I will think about that," Katherine said, instead of refusing this time. "But tell Luca not to hurl guns like that."
"Sure, Grandma. How were your s? Is everything okay?" Sara asked, swiftly changing their conversation.
"Yes, everything is fine. The doctor gave me a few multivitamin tablets. Nothing more," Katherine replied.
"I see. I will hang up then. Rest well, Grandma. I love you," said Sara and ended the call.
