Mingyue's wish was simple, but for them it was not easy to achieve at all.
Many of their family members were still missing. Mingyue's parents. Alex's father.
And there was also danger from the Primordial and the Progenitors hanging over their heads.
Every second mattered.
"I promise you," Alex said.
"One day we will celebrate like that. In a warm house, with everyone we love."
Mingyue smiled and nodded.
It felt far away, but she believed they would reach it.
Time passed on.
In the city hall, festive music started playing.
A choir of kids began singing Christmas carols.
The city hall was bright and crowded.
Men wore suits, Women wore dresses.
Jewelry glittered under the dome lights.
Robots moved between the guests carrying trays, refilling glasses, even cleaning spills before anyone noticed.
Alex and Mingyue entered with the flow of people.
To everyone else, they were just another couple coming to enjoy the holiday.
The choir finished one song, then started another.
Applause spread across the hall.
Then the crowd parted.
A man walked up to the main stage.
He wore a black suit with a silver pin on his chest. His hair was dark and neat.
But Alex's eyes narrowed.
'It's him, I have seen him before on TV.
He's giving some kind of speech for his country. But he look younger now.
Either he had extended his lifespan, or he had been rebuilt in a better body.'
The man raised his hands, and the hall quieted.
"My friends.Another year has passed."
We are still here.
We endured when the old world collapsed.
We survived when others fell."
He paused, letting the words sink in.
"We are the ones who carried humanity forward."
More applause.
"This city is proof. We live in Utopia.
No one needed to work, everyone is well-fed.
Our children sing.
Our families eat together. We have peace."
And next year will be better.
We will build more. We will expand.
We will raise humanity to a new stage."
He lifted his hand.
A robot come than give him a glass.
"A future where we decide our own fate."
The crowd cheered.
Alex stared at the man on the stage.
"He's a good talker," Mingyue mumbled.
As someone who grew up in a cultivation world, she always found it funny how some people could rise in rank just by talking.
In her world, someone like that would at best become a bootlicker, then get thrown away when their master got bored.
There was no way they could climb on words alone.
"So he's the one you want to kidnap," Mingyue said.
"Not just him," Alex replied. "We wait until the party ends. I'm sure they have an after party for the leaders."
He glanced at her.
"Just don't be surprised by what you see."
"Alex, I'm from a cultivation world," Mingyue said. "I've seen it all."
Alex's lips twitched. He shook his head.
What he meant was different.
These people loved putting on a clean face in public, then acting like criminals in private.
He was sure they would do something filthy in the back room.
Something that broke every normal law and basic decency.
That was how parasites lived.
But Mingyue's world was worse in another way.
Cultivators did it for power.
He had read about it before.
Using partners as cauldrons. Turning living humans into pills.
Using torture to push the victim's state into something "extreme."
Alex had never thought about it deeply before, but now the logic was clear.
When people were near the end, when their emotions were extreme, their lifeforce burned the brightest.
'They may not understand the mechanism,' Alex thought. 'But they were touching the truth.'
Alex and Mingyue moved to a corner, never losing sight of the world leader's position.
They ate while they watched.
They tried a variety of dishes.
"Your world's food is really amazing," Mingyue said, taking another spoon of ice cream.
"If there's one thing my world won't lose at, it's entertainment and food," Alex said, while feeling bitter inside.
"Even the Mechalyte stole a lot of our entertainment tech and resold it."
Alex's still remember his own prototype is listen on the market list..
'Escio Market,' he thought. 'I need to find out more about that.'
He was sure it was controlled by some independent organization, not the Mechalyte.
With the universe being this large, the Mechalyte were too weak to build a marketplace that big on their own.
They were users, not owners.
Which meant someone else was collecting the real profit.
And that someone else was worth looking at.
Time passed. The music slowed.
People started leaving to spend time with their families.
This party was open to the public, but not everyone stayed until the end.
Alex and Mingyue turned invisible and followed the man who had given the speech. He walked deeper into the city hall, past staff corridors, until he reached a room with two large doors.
Two security robots stood on each side, guarding the entrance.
Alex stepped forward to slip past them.
The robots suddenly moved and blocked the way.
"I'm sorry, sir," one of them said.
"You are not allowed to enter this place."
Alex's eyes narrowed.
He used his ability to analyze the robot, line by line, signal by signal.
'I'm sure this robot shouldn't be able to detect us.'
Mingyue's interest rose.
'Something can detect us here. Good. This won't be boring.'
Alex lifted his gaze toward the ceiling cameras, then toward the hidden sensors inside the walls.
"Who is giving you orders?" he asked. "Someone is sending commands to this robot."
He paused for a breath.
"Is it you, Sigma?"
Alex pushed his senses outward to the limit, trying to catch the controller.
A living being would be simple. He could just find the strongest lifeforce in the building.
But a robot could be controlled remotely.
The signal could be routed a thousand different ways.
He clicked his tongue.
"Fine. If you want to do it this way."
His body blurred.
In the next moment, he was in front of the robot.
Runes shimmered over his fingertips, flickering like thin glass under sunlight.
He smashed his palm into its torso.
BAM!
The robot's chest caved in. Its lights flickered, then stuttered.
The other robot reacted at once.
"Intru…"
It did not finish the word.
Its body froze solid in an instant, then cracked into pieces like brittle stone.
Mingyue stood behind it, her index finger still raised, as if she had only tapped it lightly.
Alex did not look back. His eyes were now busy analyzing the source of the signal.
