Saryx let out a chuckle.
"Can you imagine it? One human fighting all the dragon Sovereigns, leaving unscathed, and even beating them."
"And you still plan to challenge her?" Mingyue asked.
"Of course I'm not stupid," Saryx replied. "Even as a dragon, I won't commit suicide for pride."
Alex's eyes narrowed. "It's the star. You plan to do something with the star."
Saryx's grin returned. "It's not just the star. Those soul insects, and the remains of the Arachne Progenitor here, will help my plan."
"Arachne Progenitor?" Mingyue's voice sharpened. "You mean the thing inside that mining facility?"
Saryx's claw flicked, and he rushed forward.
Alex met him with the hammer shaft.
CLANG!!!
Their bodies slammed together, shoulder to shoulder, and Saryx tried to turn his weight into a throw.
Alex shifted his hips and resisted, then drove a short hammer jab into Saryx's ribs.
BAM!!!
Saryx took it and answered with a knee.
Mingyue cut in from the side, her blade tapping his wing edge.
CLANG!!!
Saryx snapped his elbow back, but Mingyue had already moved, stabbing again at the cracked chest.
Saryx twisted, barely avoiding the thrust, and the blade scraped across scales, drawing sparks.
"Seems you came here without knowing it," Saryx said. "So what's your goal?"
"We came to kidnap you," Mingyue replied, eyes cold.
"HAHAHAHA!" Saryx laughed, like it was the funniest thing he'd heard all year. "Kidnap me? Go ahead if you can. But I don't see the point."
Alex didn't smile.
He used the moment Saryx laughed to slam the hammerhead toward Saryx's chest again.
Saryx caught it with his forearm and forced it aside, then snapped a claw toward Alex's face.
Alex leaned away, but the claw still grazed his cheek.
Mingyue's sword flashed again toward Saryx's wounded eye.
Saryx jerked his head, and her blade cut his cheek instead, reopening that thin blood line.
Alex asked.
"You said your father fought Alucard. Does that mean the other Overlords know too?"
Saryx scoffed and drove a knee toward Alex's stomach.
Alex took it on his forearm, then shoved Saryx back with the hammer shaft.
"You think a dragon Overlord would tell others he got beaten by the remains of a loser?" Saryx said.
Alex didn't let him breathe. He stepped in again, forcing Saryx to keep guarding.
"If your father lost," Alex said, "does that mean he's dead?"
Saryx's grin twisted.
"It would be better if he were dead," Saryx said. "But no. Your zombie Progenitor let him live."
Saryx's claw snapped out again.
Alex raised the hammer shaft and met it head-on.
CLANG!!!
The impact rang through the forest like a bell.
Mingyue stepped in on Saryx's blind side and stabbed for the cracked line on his chest.
Saryx twisted his torso at the last instant.
The blade didn't pierce deep, but it scraped the wound and widened it by a hair.
Saryx's tail whipped backward without warning.
BAM!!!
Alex shifted and took it on a rune layer around his ribs. The layer cracked, and the force still pushed him back half a step.
Saryx followed the tail's recoil and drove his elbow toward Alex's throat.
Alex jammed it with his forearm, then shoved the hammer handle up under Saryx's armpit, trying to break his balance.
Saryx answered by dropping his weight and ramming his shoulder into Alex's chest.
BOOM!!!
Alex slid back, boots carving two deep lines into the grass.
He stopped the retreat by planting the hammerhead into the ground for a breath.
Mingyue flashed in again.
One blade distracted Saryx's wing edge. The other went straight for the wounded eye.
Saryx snapped his head and barely avoided the eye strike.
The blade cut his cheek again and drew another line of blood.
His eyes turned sharp.
He grabbed at Mingyue's wrist.
Mingyue twisted her grip and let the blade slide in her palm, changing angle.
She pulled the sword free and used the motion to slash at Saryx's fingers instead.
CLANG!!!
Scales stopped the cut, but purple ice clung to the joints.
Saryx's hand slowed for a breath.
Alex took that breath.
He stepped in and drove the warhammer into Saryx's ribs, the same spot again.
BAM!!!
Saryx's body jolted. His feet dug into the ground to stay upright, claws tearing the soil into chunks.
Saryx continued, voice rough as he fought.
"I don't know the details. I left as soon as the fight started. But I know my father is still alive."
Mingyue's eyes narrowed, and her grip on her swords tightened.
Alex's mind moved fast.
If Alucard was truly alive, then the whole situation was worse than they thought.
What was Alucard's goal in showing himself to the Dragon Overlord?
Why didn't he gather the survivors of the vampire race first?
But knowing how quirky Alucard was, Alex decided it was pointless trying to guess his motives.
People like him could do things for no reason at all.
"Why not make a truce, Saryx?" Alex said. "We'll help you against the Primordial representative."
Saryx's lips curled. "Normally I'd say no. But you two have the strength to be useful."
His eyes sharpened. "The question is what you want from it. If you expect to kidnap me afterward, then over my dead body."
He lifted his chin slightly, filled with arrogance.
"I am Saryx, Dragon Prince of the Void Dragon Tribe. I will never fall to that level."
Alex raised two fingers.
"I only need two things from you. First, information about the Primordial representative and the locations of the vampire outposts you attacked.
Second, you listen to my proposal about fighting the Human Empire."
Saryx snorted. "That's three, not two."
He paused, then nodded once.
"Fine. I can give you that. And I'm interested in that proposal."
Alex didn't waste time.
"First, do you know the name of the Primordial representative?"
He needed something concrete.
If the name had appeared in the Human Empire's records, he could dig for more information later.
But even with his ability to think many possibilities, he never imagined the name Saryx would say next.
"Of course," Saryx replied. "Her name is Olivia."
