Chapter 263: Chapter 262: Someone Uses a Child to Blackmail Their Way Into a Wealthy Family
"What do you like to drink?"
Mrs. Grant quickly withdrew her gaze, hardly lingering on Serena Sullivan’s legs.
"Plain water!"
Serena replied with a faint smile.
This wasn’t her first time meeting Mrs. Grant; four years ago, Serena had met both Renee Grant and Mrs. Grant.
Their purpose in seeking her out was the same.
Skipping to now, it’s likely for the same reason.
"How have you been these years on the outside?"
Mrs. Grant’s inquiry made Serena, who was holding a cup, pause for a moment.
Unlike Renee’s opening line, Mrs. Grant didn’t immediately say something like telling her to leave Ethan Grant.
Mrs. Grant and Renee were about the same age; she was the second wife of Mr. Grant. She married him when she was just in her early twenties.
"Not bad."
Serena replied politely, thinking that Mrs. Grant would soon get to the point.
These days, her photos with Finn Chandler had caused a stir online, with everyone saying that she was two-timing.
She wanted Mrs. Grant’s position while also unwilling to let go of Finn Chandler.
However, The Matron Grant didn’t mention a word about it.
Sitting across from Serena, she sipped the floral tea in her cup slowly, unhurried.
Not in a rush, nor did she seem to be waiting for Ethan to arrive, as if she really just invited her out for tea.
They sat for most of the day, and Serena had nearly finished the water in her cup, but she dared not drink more, fearing a sudden urge to use the restroom.
For someone disabled, nothing was more feared than needing to go but being unable to.
"It’s not that I dislike you."
After a long silence, Mrs. Grant spoke. Serena looked up, realizing they were finally getting to the point.
"You’re pretty and smart, though your family background is a bit lacking, it’s still acceptable."
"Since Ethan likes you so much, I have no reason to oppose."
Mrs. Grant spoke gently; she was an elegant, warm woman.
Years ago, Serena didn’t know what she discussed with Claire Sullivan in a café.
Claire was very agitated, eyes red with anger, and when she came out, she pulled Serena away, while The Matron Grant sat in the café, leisurely sipping her coffee.
A woman like her, calm and composed, was more formidable than Claire Sullivan and Renee Grant.
"I am not worthy of Ethan Grant."
Serena spoke bluntly, expecting Mrs. Grant to coldly sneer, but was surprised by the look of bewilderment in Mrs. Grant’s eyes.
Was Mrs. Grant not like the others who believed Serena wasn’t worthy of Ethan?
Four years ago, and now, with her leg disabled, even more so.
"It’s not up to me to decide if you’re worthy or not." Mrs. Grant’s face returned to calmness, and she picked up the teapot to refill Serena’s cup.
"In the past, some people used children to blackmail a family into marrying high."
"I’ve always detested that approach."
Mrs. Grant changed the subject, saying things Serena couldn’t decipher.
"Serena, I’ve come here..."
Mrs. Grant looked at Serena and continued talking until Butler Sterling’s voice was heard from outside.
"Young Master, you’ve arrived."
The door opened, followed by hurried footsteps approaching from behind Serena.
Serena took a sip from the cup in front of her, not needing to turn her head. From Butler Sterling’s announcement and Mrs. Grant’s smile, it was clear Ethan Grant had arrived.
He walked up to her, bent down, and his handsome face leaned close to her ear, "Are you okay?"
"No!" Serena replied succinctly as the wind blew in through the window, carrying with it the pungent smell of disinfectant.
