My Ability Pool is Superior-Chapter 20: Reunion

Chapter 20

“Once again reminding everyone citizens, the temporary shelter is to protect the safety of all citizens. Please stay calm and orderly…”
Noisy human voices came from outside the window, and the broadcast was playing various shelter regulations, all mixed together.
The massive noise was irritating to hear, but for some reason, it also gave a sense of stability from order being rebuilt.
Due to the reality of not fully understanding the zombie virus, for safety’s sake, all survivors accommodated in this military base would have an observation period.
Lu Bai leaned against the cold cement wall, idly looking at the light coming through the small window overhead.
Though called single rooms, these rooms were probably converted from confinement cells or prisons. Anyway, they had one thing in common: they were completely empty, with nothing to kill time.
He was sent in yesterday evening, and now it was already bright outside.
With the situation like this, thinking about humane management was enough.
Fortunately, dedicated staff would provide food and drinking water on time, and most survivors under isolation observation had no complaints.
Hmm, naturally there were exceptions.
“Iron doors~ Iron windows~ Iron~ chains~”
Hearing the mournful singing from the next room, Lu Bai’s eyelids twitched.
He was basically ninety percent sure that the guy next door was a death fighter.
After all, he had taken out so many death fighters already. Even without positioning information for verification, he could tell from the other’s mental state.
After experiencing the zombie outbreak, normal survivors almost never reached this level of carefree optimism.
However, even if a death fighter was right next door, Lu Bai couldn’t make a move in a place like this.
He’d deal with it after getting out.
Speaking of which, it was quite a coincidence; the singing next door had barely started.
Lu Bai noticed the sound of military boots stepping on the ground.
Squeak~
Two fully armed soldiers walked over. One soldier opened the iron barred door and beckoned to Lu Bai: “Come out.”
……
Led by the two soldiers, Lu Bai arrived at a place like an office hall.
There were quite a few survivors like him being led over by soldiers. Staff sat behind every glass counter, busy yet exuding an air of orderly efficiency.
Seeing Lu Bai sit down at the position, the staff behind the glass smiled and said: “Don’t be nervous, we just need you to answer some simple questions.”
Lu Bai glanced at the soldiers scattered around the hall and obediently nodded.
“Name?”
“Ke Jianghao.”
“Age?”
“Eighteen.”
“Where were you when this social safety issue broke out? Did you have any close contact with patients?”
“School…”
“…Don’t be nervous, it’s very safe here. Alright, thank you for your cooperation. You can go rest in the tent assigned to you.”
The staff stopped typing on the keyboard, glanced at the information on the computer screen, and casually asked: “Little Ke, don’t you have a younger sister?”
Lu Bai was already preparing to leave, halfway standing up when he heard the question. A flicker of unusual color flashed in his eyes, then he showed an extremely excited expression: “Yes, that’s right. Have you seen my sister?”
“Haha, you siblings both have pretty good luck. Um, let me see—your sister is in tent 13 in District 21.”
……
Leaving the office hall, Lu Bai naturally restrained the excitement on his face.
In view were densely packed military tents, with people coming and going between the gaps, and some even playing poker together.
Clearly, due to a lack of personnel, the enforcement side could at most manage tight on the outside and loose on the inside for now.
An area with over a thousand people, assigned only two or three soldiers.
As long as there was no brawling, no one cared at all.
Lu Bai looked toward the direction of District 21, hesitated for a moment, then decided to go check it out.
Ke Jiangni being in this shelter also meant the others should be with her.
However, Lu Bai impersonating Ke Jianghao without being exposed was very strange.
Could it be that Ke Jianghao had died on the way to the shelter?
While pondering, Lu Bai walked toward District 21, keeping an innocent smile on his face.
By the way, at this stage, the temporary shelter implemented semi-militarized management, prohibiting citizens from crossing areas.
But this regulation, how to put it… was just like how it wasn’t allowed in principle.
If you weren’t caught on the spot, it didn’t count as a violation.
Avoiding the soldiers along the way, Lu Bai easily slipped into District 21.
“Sigh~ When will this damn life end?”
“Come out to sunbathe.”
“Baby don’t cry, Mommy’s here.”
“It was so damn thrilling, let me tell you, that monster was only half a meter away from me then…”
It had to be said that humans were extremely adaptable creatures. No matter what happened, as long as they didn’t die, life would go on.
Lu Bai looked around and didn’t see those familiar faces from school.
He simply checked the numbers posted on the tents one by one.
Lu Bai stopped, poked his head into a tent, but unfortunately, besides a few sets of bedding, no one was there.
He turned back to confirm the number: “21-13, this is it.”
At that moment, a voice filled with surprise and a bit of uncertainty sounded behind him.
“Lu… Student Lu?”
Lu Bai turned around reflexively.
He saw the somewhat familiar face behind him—not pretty, but recognizable—and couldn’t help raising his eyebrows slightly: “Wu Ya.”
Wu Ya nodded vigorously, her tone clearly filled with joy: “It really is you. I thought I recognized the wrong person.”
Lu Bai asked: “Are you by yourself?”
“Jiangni and Tian Wang are over there getting food.” Wu Ya pointed to a sunshade in the distance surrounded by a crowd.
“What about the others?”
At this question, the joy on Wu Ya’s face instantly disappeared, sinking visibly at a speed the eye could see.
Lu Bai didn’t press further and instead asked why they had left the supermarket.
After all, less than a week had passed, so with that supermarket’s supply reserves, it shouldn’t have reached the point of needing them to risk their lives leaving to find food.
“I don’t know how to explain it.”
Wu Ya was silent for a long time, seemingly very afraid of recalling that time: “On the second night after you left, it seemed like there was an extra person in the supermarket.”
“Seemed like?” Lu Bai noticed her wording.
“Yeah… We all felt that way, but Ke Jianghao searched the entire supermarket and couldn’t find that extra person.”
Describing the situation back then, even under the sun, Wu Ya felt a chill on her back.
“This kind of supernatural thing.” Death fighter?
Lu Bai thought thoughtfully and conveniently patted Wu Ya’s head to comfort her.
With his hearing far beyond normal, he wasn’t worried about death fighters having invisibility ability.
It was just that in Wu Ya’s description, it seemed more than just simple invisibility.
