My Ability Pool is Superior-Chapter 33: Chaos Intensifies

Chapter 33

Tap~ Tap~ Tap~
Crisp footsteps echoed from the corridor outside the laboratory. Anyone paying a little attention would notice that the intervals in this series of footsteps were extremely uniform, without the slightest panic.
Hearing the movement, the four soldiers guarding the isolation room all became vigilant and simultaneously aimed their muzzles at the laboratory gate.
A Gu pressed his forehead against the glass of the isolation door, excitedly observing the situation outside.
The footsteps in the corridor grew closer and closer, sounding as if they had already reached the laboratory entrance.
A heavy atmosphere enveloped the laboratory interior, with the soldiers all prepared to open fire the moment the other appeared.
The next second, a boy dressed as a high school student turned the corner from the corridor. He acted as if the several fully armed soldiers didn’t exist at all, walking straight toward the isolation room.
In A Gu’s field of vision, this scene was extremely unreasonable.
After all, the task of those four soldiers was to guard A Gu, who was hiding in the isolation room.
In this situation, if a stranger suddenly appeared, they should at least be shot to kill on the spot, or called out and interrogated.
However, nothing happened. Even from the expressions of these soldiers, they seemed to still be vigilantly staring at the laboratory entrance, anomalously ignoring the handsome high school student who had walked in.
The entire process was so anomalous that it was somewhat oppressive, making A Gu instinctively want to escape.
To be factual, A Gu had anticipated death fighters coming to his door, but he hadn’t expected the first one to arrive to be this strange.
What made him feel most uneasy was that he couldn’t guess at all what type of ability the other had.
It was certain that it was absolutely not as simple as invisibility, but if it was large-scope cognition modification… that clearly didn’t fall within the scope of silver ability.
“An effect from a combination of two abilities?” A Gu felt he should say something.
The boy suddenly disappeared from in front of A Gu, then suddenly appeared again.
The other’s strange behavior inexplicably relaxed A Gu quite a bit. Whether it was a hint or showing off, it all carried the meaning of wanting communication.
The high school student provocatively blinked his eyes: “Open the door.”
Click~
A Gu did so, trying to make himself appear relaxed: “How about cooperation?”
“No need for cooperation. If you don’t want to be eliminated right now, just follow me.”
……
“District Twenty-three, which way was that again?”
Lu Bai, carrying a chilling eight-sided Han sword on his back, leaped onto the high wall of the military base and looked around.
He didn’t go to find Wu Ya and the others first, but instead left the military base, dug up the eight-sided Han sword he had buried by the roadside, and only then turned back.
In the end, he was just repaying the goodwill conveyed by Wu Ya; he wasn’t their nanny.
He didn’t mind protecting others, but that had to be premised on his own safety.
This temporary shelter already had over a hundred death fighters gathered. Even though Lu Bai knew he was definitely stronger than other death fighters, he didn’t think he could rampage through the entire military base without restraint.
Lu Bai called up the system panel, confirmed that A Gu hadn’t moved, then exited and leaped down from the high wall.
Calculating the time, from retrieving the sword to turning back, he hadn’t delayed too long, but the chaos within the settlement had already spread to an uncontrollable degree.
On his way to District Twenty-three, crowds of panicked fleeing people filled his view, with zombie figures occasionally appearing.
After all, the population density in the settlement was too high. Once zombies broke in, under virus-style infection, their numbers would rise geometrically.
Lu Bai couldn’t possibly kill every zombie he saw; at most, he could resolve the ones blocking his path.
The closer he got to District Twenty-three, the fewer citizens he encountered along the way, replaced by one blood-and-flesh monster after another.
What this represented went without saying.
Though he didn’t want to be too pessimistic, Lu Bai felt the chances of Wu Ya and the others still being alive were indeed minuscule.
One sword severed the heads of two zombies, and the passage entrance to District Twenty-three came into view.
Da-da-da!
The dense gunshots hadn’t stopped yet, and soldiers were still resisting at the passage.
But both ends of the passage were blocked by large numbers of zombies, making breakout difficult. This resistance was nothing more than a slow death.
The color steel tile enclosures separating the settlement were riddled with gaps everywhere, and large sections had been violently crushed.
“Damn it! I’ll fight you all to the death!”
Sun Chuan held an assault rifle, standing behind his comrade’s shield, continuously pouring out firepower.
He felt very unlucky. At this rate, he probably wouldn’t even get a single point before being eliminated.
As a death fighter, randomly starting as a soldier had briefly excited him for a while.
When the virus outbreak happened, seeing the rapidly decreasing number of death fighters on the system panel, he decisively decided to hole up in the military base—maybe he could survive into the top ten.
Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned. Before he could hole up long, he was transferred to the newly formed rapid response force.
No matter what incident occurred, his squad had to rush to the scene first.
Especially tonight—upon receiving the order to seal the passage, he had faintly felt uneasy, but with his comrades around, he couldn’t find an opportunity to run.
Sun Chuan touched the magazine slung over his shoulder, involuntarily trembling in fear.
He forcefully swallowed a mouthful of saliva, knowing he couldn’t wait to be killed any longer.
Once the last magazine was emptied, he would instantly be overwhelmed by the zombies.
He had to escape. Even if there was only the slightest possibility, he had to try.
Taking advantage of the moment when his teammate beside him swapped magazines during alternating fire, he tensed his muscles, reached out to grab the back collar of the shield comrade in front, and yanked him backward forcefully.
The shield soldier lost his balance from the yank and fell backward.
The zombies, who had been tightly held back at the passage periphery, naturally wouldn’t miss this opportunity and all crazily pounced toward the soldier lying on the ground.
Sun Chuan took advantage of the gap where the zombies were attracted to his comrade and rushed in a direction with fewer zombies.
It must be said that Sun Chuan had excellently grasped this fleeting gap. Now, he just needed to take out the two outermost zombies to break through successfully.
For him, holding an assault rifle, this wasn’t difficult.
But his luck had indeed always been poor.
The tent on the side suddenly collapsed from a collision, and a zombie flew out, smashing right into him.
“Fuck!”
The terrifying force sent Sun Chuan flying a full six or seven meters. Taking such a hit, broken bones would be the least of it, let alone getting back up to continue fleeing.
In despair, Sun Chuan caught sight of a figure with the corner of his eye, standing behind the collapsed tent.
“Save… save…”
He couldn’t even say a complete sentence; as soon as he opened his mouth, blood surged from his throat.
Lu Bai didn’t extend a helping hand, just stood in place scratching the back of his head, a harmless smile on his face.
