Chapter 237: 234: Provocation
"Are you Ye Lingran?" A haughty female voice came through, surprisingly fluent in English.
Ye Lingran listened, lifted her eyes and saw a tall, blonde girl dressed stylishly, with fairly good looks, though her expression was arrogant and disdainful. After sizing her up, Ye Lingran glanced at the two girls beside her, one was a foreigner, the other looked mixed-race. From their attire, it seemed they were socialites here to attend the evening banquet, no doubt!
Due to her foot injury, Ye Lingran initially wanted to stand up out of courtesy, but her ankle wouldn’t allow it, so she offered a polite but shallow smile: "Yes, I am. And you are...?"
The leading girl let out a sneer, snatched a glass of red wine from the hand of the mixed-race girl on her left, and splashed it directly onto Ling Ran. Then she feigned surprise: "Oh, sorry, my hand slipped. Carl said you’re a typical Oriental beauty, gentle and serene, like a beauty from ancient times. Now you really do look the part."
Once the girl finished speaking, the other two girls beside her also started laughing, throwing in a few mocking comments as well.
The sudden splash of red wine left Ye Lingran a bit dazed, her smile frozen on her face. In the winter night’s chill, the wine seeped in, making her shiver as she gradually came back to her senses listening to their ridicule.
Ye Lingran knew Carl. He was the Deputy Director of Administration for the Milan Fashion Week organizers. They had dined together before, and Carl had privately asked for her phone number and invited her to dinner, all of which she politely declined.
She was no fool. The strong intention of these three girls aimed directly at her was surely related to Carl.
Though Ye Lingran was gentle and serene, with a particularly good disposition, she never tolerated silent grievances, nor cared to ask why they were targeting her and speaking such slander. She glanced at the untouched glass of orange juice on the table, then chuckled lightly.
Hearing her laughter, the three girls moved two steps closer, aggressively staring at her: "What’s so funny? No laughing."
Ye Lingran remained unfazed by their threats, leisurely picked up the orange juice, gently swirled, took an elegant sip, and then raised her eyebrows in satisfaction: "Hmm, quite tasty, but it’s quite a pity."
"What do you mean by that?" The mixed-race girl apparently understood Chinese and frowned at Ling Ran’s remark, sharply questioning her.
Ye Lingran was about to stand up, but the pain in her leg made her wince. To avoid their mockery, she forced herself to endure the pain and slowly stood up anyway, completely ignoring the mixed-race girl, focusing on the leading girl, and she smiled radiantly as she replied fluently in English: "Although we’re not familiar, considering this special form of greeting upon our first meeting, I think not responding would be rather rude."
If speaking in Cen Jin’s terms: she’s not a saint, forgiveness isn’t her duty, that’s God’s business, not hers.
The girl seemed perplexed by Ye Lingran’s words, but before she could ask, Ye Lingran, with a gentle smile, splashed the orange juice directly onto her, leaving the two girls beside her too shocked to utter a word.
"You... How dare you..." The girl who got splashed found it unbelievable. Up until now, no one had dared treat her this way.
Due to this incident, many onlookers gathered around. Ye Lingran didn’t want to entangle herself further and her sprained foot wasn’t allowing her to stand much longer, so without bothering with any more exchanges, she turned around and walked away.
"Who gave you permission to leave? Come back here." As Ye Lingran began to walk away, the closest foreign girl reacted, angrily grabbing Ye Lingran’s hair.
Ye Lingran felt the pain, her breath caught, and a cold gasp escaped her as her body was pulled backwards by inertia. Instinctively, she raised her hand to grab her hair, reducing the pain on her scalp.
Seeing the situation grow more chaotic, some people around came to mediate, but the three girls had no intention of letting Ye Lingran go, completely ignoring their mediation with a disdainful remark about them minding their own business.
