Chapter 413: 015: Household Matters_2
Ye Lingran smiled at her, glanced at the daffodils in the vase on the windowsill that were about to wither, and softly said, "Could you change those daffodils? And please wash the grapes, thank you."
The caregiver took the items and went to work. Ye Lingran placed her bag on the counter next to her, walked over, and sat by Grandma Ye’s side on the bed’s edge. Seeing her raise her hands, Ling Ran naturally held them. "Grandma, I’m here to see you. You haven’t forgotten me, have you?"
"You’re Ranran, my beloved granddaughter. How could Grandma forget you!" Although Grandma Ye was elderly, she was dressed very cleanly and neatly, and her face was fair and tidy. It was apparent that she must have been a beauty in her youth.
Ye Lingran smiled knowingly, "How have you been feeling these days? Is there anything that’s been bothering you?"
"It’s quite good here, but I’ve been missing you."
"I’m sorry, Grandma, for taking so long to come see you."
"Oh, Grandma understands. You’re working after all! You must be busy." Grandma Ye smiled warmly, patting the back of Ye Lingran’s hand. The joy on her face was clearly heartfelt. As she spoke, she glanced towards the door, hesitating slightly, as if pondering something.
"Grandma, what’s the matter?" Following her elders’ gaze, Ye Lingran noticed nothing and couldn’t help but curiously ask.
"That... where’s my grandson-in-law? Didn’t he say he would come see me again last time? I’ve been waiting for so many days, and he hasn’t come." Grandma Ye looked at Ye Lingran with slight disappointment, her tone hinting at a feeling of grievance.
Ye Lingran was taken aback, her lips moved slightly, suddenly unsure of what to say.
At this moment, the caregiver emerged with freshly washed grapes, smiling, "Miss Ye, the grapes are washed. Besides you, Grandma Ye talks the most about her grandson-in-law these days, boasting to Grandma Huang next door about how handsome and excellent he is and how well-matched you two are!"
"Thank you." Ye Lingran took the transparent tray and placed it on the table beside her. After pausing, she asked, "Did she mention him when she was clear-minded or when her mind wasn’t very clear?"
"Both."
Ye Lingran pressed her lips together, looked at Grandma Ye, and managed a smile as she explained, "He’s been a bit busy at the company lately, but once things settle down, he’ll definitely come to visit you."
"Really?"
"Of course it’s true!" Ye Lingran softened her tone, like coaxing a young child, as she helped Grandma to the sofa and personally peeled grapes for her.
Afterward, Ye Lingran stayed with Grandma Ye, chatting with her, and accompanied her for a walk in the garden at the nursing home to enjoy the sunshine. As five o’clock approached, the sun’s rays became less warm, and she helped Grandma Ye back to her room. It coincided with the mealtime at the nursing home, and Ye Lingran coaxed her elders to finish lunch before leaving.
As she left the nursing home, the sunset covered the earth in a warm orange-red glow. Ye Lingran gazed at the setting sun in the west, exhaling deeply. She suddenly began to reflect on whether the lie she told was right, as not only did she deceive her grandma, parents, and friends, but it seemed... she was almost deceiving herself. The hollow feeling in her heart these days, she knew exactly where it came from.
Since returning from Jiang City that time, they hadn’t met more than twice. One time at Lu Shishu’s birthday, and another when she went with Yun Xi to a factory under the Yun Group and saw him, but they didn’t speak, as he was busy discussing cooperation with some foreigners. As for calls and messages, they were even more scarce.
She began to contemplate the issue again, yet her mind was a mess without any clear thoughts on what to do.
After standing in place for a while, a ringtone interrupted her thoughts. Upon regaining attention, she took out her phone from her bag, and seeing the caller ID, her heart skipped a beat—she really was thinking about what came just now.
Ye Lingran calmed her slightly tense and flustered heart, took a deep breath, and answered the call, putting it to her ear. "Hello..."
"Are you still busy?"
"No..." Listening to the gentle male voice on the other end, Ye Lingran felt a sense of familiarity. After a pause, she replied.
"Where are you now?"
"Just came out of the nursing home."
"Went to see Grandma?"
"Yeah, today the work at the studio was finished, and I had a break, so I thought I hadn’t seen her in a while and came to visit." Ye Lingran spoke while walking toward her parked car, curiously asking in return, "Um... did you call because... something’s up?"
