Chapter 92: The First Day Back
The double entendre in Lin Tian's earlier comment hadn't been lost on Gan Yanyu. With a playful pout, she nudged him lightly with her elbow and whispered, "We should get going. We'll be late for school."
---
Qingzhou Seventh High School.
Classroom 3-A.
After parting ways with Gan Yanyu at the school gate, Lin Tian made his way to his own classroom. Though he was slightly concerned about how Gan Yanyu might fare on her first day back—especially since they weren't in the same class—he knew there was little he could do to look out for her now.
As he settled into his seat, his desk-mate Xu Yong immediately gawked at him. "Who are you?"
"Your dad," Lin Tian shot back dryly.
"Holy crap, you're alive? I thought I was seeing a ghost!" Xu Yong exclaimed, grabbing a textbook from his desk and holding it up as a makeshift shield against any potential punches. "You've been absent for three days straight! I thought you were dead or something."
"I had some things to take care of, so I took leave," Lin Tian replied nonchalantly.
"This isn't like you at all, bro. My Bro Tian treasures every second like gold. Even when you skipped a day for being sick before, you stayed up all night catching up on lessons!" Xu Yong shook his head dramatically, lamenting the obvious influence women had over men.
"And here I was thinking you didn't care about me anymore—you never reached out either!" Lin Tian raised an eyebrow skeptically.
"Don't give me that bull. Check your phone. How many messages did I send you?" Xu Yong snapped.
Reluctantly, Lin Tian pulled out his phone and opened WeChat. Sure enough, Xu Yong's frantic texts flooded the screen:
21:42 - Bro, why weren't you in class today?
22:23 - Lin Tian, where the hell are you? Don't tell me you hooked up with that girl already?!
22:36 - You bastard, not replying to my messages? Are you serious right now?
22:58 - Bro, please reply. I swear I'll believe whatever excuse you give. You're killing me here, ughhh…
"…"
Thankfully, Lin Tian hadn't seen these messages until now. He grimaced. On Tuesday night, between the relentless caffeine and hours spent practicing piano, he hadn't even glanced at his phone.
"And let's not forget the video you posted with Gan Yanyu!" Xu Yong continued, clearly still traumatized. While everyone else watched the clip and cooed over its sweetness, Xu Yong had spent that evening writhing on his bed like a tortured worm.
"…"
Lin Tian couldn't deny it. Since the concert, his perspective on certain things had shifted. Upon reflection, if it were Gan Yanyu… maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea after all.
---
After their usual morning banter, Lin Tian scanned the classroom. Everyone seemed engrossed in their morning reading session, oblivious to his presence. Turning to Xu Yong, he asked cautiously, "Hey, Yong, has there been any weird gossip about me going around recently?"
"Gossip? There's always gossip about you," Xu Yong replied matter-of-factly, ticking off examples on his fingers. "Like how you've already secured admission to Tsinghua or Peking University, or that you have a soulmate from another school, or that you're packing 23 centimeters—"
"That last one's true," Lin Tian interjected smugly.
"Anyway," he continued, leaning closer, "what about rumors related to the concert?"
"Concert?" Xu Yong furrowed his brow, utterly baffled by the sudden mention of music. "Haven't heard anything about that."
"Good."
Lin Tian exhaled in relief. He'd been worried that his and Gan Yanyu's performance would spark a frenzy of gossip within the small high school community, given their real names were attached to the event. But so far, nothing unusual had surfaced. Aside from the occasional lingering glance—likely due to his own striking appearance—no one seemed particularly interested in him.
It made sense. To outsiders, the music scene felt vast and significant, but unless someone broke through into mainstream fame, most people remained blissfully unaware. And considering photography had been prohibited during the concert, news of their performance hadn't spread widely either.
Honestly, Lin Tian didn't mind the attention; he was used to being the subject of idle chatter. Occasionally, bold admirers would approach him for contact info, but none of that bothered him. His primary concern was Gan Yanyu. Freshly returned to school, unnecessary attention or trouble could easily overwhelm her.
Just then, his phone buzzed in his pocket. Pulling it out, he saw a new friend request on WeChat. The username read "NANAL," accompanied by an avatar of a stylish Western cartoon character. Perplexed, Lin Tian wondered if it was someone nearby who'd added him randomly. Out of curiosity—and because he rarely received random requests—he accepted.
The profile revealed little: a foreign landscape as the background photo, location listed as unknown, and only three days' worth of posts visible. Without further information, Lin Tian sent a simple message: Who are you?
No response came.
Lin Tian rolled his eyes. Figures—the person who eagerly added him vanished without a trace after sending a request. If this mystery user ever decided to team up with adult film star Kana Momonogi to become a covert operative, they'd surely excel at stealth missions.
Shaking off the odd interaction, Lin Tian stashed his phone away and focused on the lesson.
---
During the extended break between classes, Lin Tian stretched lazily. Even for someone like him, who'd missed three days of school, adjusting back to the rhythm took effort. He wondered how Gan Yanyu was faring—whether her return to class had been smooth.
Maybe he should check on her?
With that thought, Lin Tian stepped out of the classroom. As soon as he did, he noticed a large crowd gathered down the hallway near Class C. Curious, he approached and found a group of boys craning their necks to peer through the windows.
"Is she a transfer student?" one boy whispered excitedly.
"No, I heard she was on leave and just came back today," another replied.
"She's so aloof, so elegant…"
"Just sitting there makes her look stunning…"
"Bro, I'm telling you, I'm genuinely into her…"
Hearing snippets of conversation, Lin Tian already had a pretty good guess about whom they were discussing. Stretching his neck to join the peeping crowd, he looked inside the classroom.
There sat Gan Yanyu, perched in the last row by the window. She held a book open, brows slightly furrowed as she read intently, exuding an aura of quiet sophistication. A gentle breeze swept past, lifting strands of her hair. Absentmindedly, she brushed them aside, her eyes briefly falling on the pink watch adorning her wrist.
Her lips curved upward into a radiant smile.
