Chapter 202: Chapter 202
"Hold on," Lyra whispered, though she knew he couldn’t hear her. "We’re coming. Just hold on a little longer. Don’t you dare die on us. Not like this. Not in your sleep after everything you’ve survived."
But inside the dream realm, Satou was fighting a battle they couldn’t see or help with. All they could do was watch his body slowly weakening and hope that help would arrive in time.
The emergency communication reached Loki within minutes.Loki had been in his castle reviewing territorial s when the magical alert activated—the specific signature he’d given Cassius for absolute emergencies only.
"This better be good," Loki muttered, activating the communication channel. His irritated expression immediately shifted to concern when he heard Cassius’s urgent voice explaining the situation.
Ten minutes later, a portal tore open in the middle of Satou’s settlement. Loki stepped through, his presence making the air pressure change noticeably. He was followed immediately by a woman in dark robes covered in arcane symbols—Morgana, his personal mage and specialist in obscure magical disciplines.
Lyra met them immediately. "Thank you for coming so quickly. He’s this way."
They moved through the settlement at a rapid pace, drawing stares from residents who’d never seen a high-ranking demon lord in person. Loki ignored them all, his focus entirely on reaching Satou.
In Satou’s quarters, the scene was tense. Jessica still sat beside Satou, maintaining her diagnostic magic. Cassius stood nearby, his vampire senses monitoring for any change. And now a new figure had arrived—Seraphine, who’d received Lyra’s emergency communication through the crystal and portaled in immediately.
The corrupted angel looked devastated. "Is he—"
"Alive," Lyra confirmed. "For now. His mana is depleting slowly. We have maybe four more hours before it reaches critical levels."
Loki moved to Satou’s side, his own senses extending to examine the situation. After a moment, he cursed viciously. "Dream assassination. Someone’s actually using dream assassination on my sponsored demon lord. This is a declaration of war."
"Can you help him?" Seraphine demanded, her voice cracking slightly. "Can you wake him up? Get him out of there?"
"Not me personally," Loki admitted. "Dream magic isn’t my specialty. But Morgana..." He gestured to his mage. "She’s studied every obscure magical discipline known to demonkind. If anyone can help, she can."
Morgana moved forward, her hands already glowing with complex diagnostic magic far more sophisticated than Jessica’s healing spells. Her eyes unfocused as she read the magical signatures permeating Satou’s body.
"Dream assassination magic confirmed," she said after a long moment. "Specifically, the signature matches Merc Assault’s technique—I’ve studied his work from war records. The target is trapped in a nightmare realm constructed from their own fears and traumas. The assassin is there with them, using the environment itself as a weapon while remaining hidden. Eventually, the psychological torture breaks the target’s will, and their heart simply stops."
"How do we stop it?" Lyra asked urgently.
"We can’t pull him out forcibly without killing him," Morgana explained. "The connection between his consciousness and body is too fragile right now. But I can project my own consciousness into the dream realm. Make contact. Provide support and guidance from within."
"Is that dangerous?" Jessica asked.
"Extremely," Morgana admitted. "If Merc Assault detects my presence, he could trap me there too. Or kill me in the dream, which would kill my body. But it’s the only option we have. Lord Satou needs to know what’s happening, needs to understand he’s in a dream so he can start fighting back properly."
"Do it," Loki ordered without hesitation. "Whatever the risks, do it. Satou is under my protection, and I don’t abandon my people."
"Mine either," Seraphine added firmly. "Do whatever you need to do. I’ll provide magical support from this side."
Morgana nodded and began preparing. She sat cross-legged on the floor beside Satou’s bed, her hands forming complex signs as she chanted in an ancient language. Dark energy began coalescing around her, swirling in patterns that hurt to look at directly.
"This will take a few minutes," she said, her voice becoming distant. "Once I’m in the dream realm, my body will be as vulnerable as Lord Satou’s. Someone needs to protect us both."
"I will," Cassius said immediately, moving to stand between Morgana and the door. His vampire senses extended, alert for any physical threat.
"I’ll monitor both of your vital signs," Jessica offered, already positioning herself where she could reach both Satou and Morgana.
"And I’ll coordinate any additional support needed," Lyra said, her analytical mind already running through contingencies.
Seraphine moved to Satou’s other side, taking his hand. "I can do more than just watch. Dream magic might not be my specialty, but corruption magic can influence minds and consciousness. If Morgana can establish a connection to the dream realm, I might be able to send power through it. Enhance Satou’s abilities inside the dream."
"That could work," Morgana said, her eyes now completely white as her consciousness began separating from her body. "If you can match my frequency... Yes, I can feel your power. It’s compatible. When I make contact with Lord Satou, be ready to channel everything you can."
"Understood," Seraphine replied, her own magic beginning to glow—purple corruption energy mixing with Morgana’s darker dream magic.
Loki watched all of this with a grim expression. "Whoever hired Merc Assault is going to regret this decision. Dream assassination is expensive and requires significant connections to even contact him. That narrows down the suspect list considerably."
"Suspects can wait," Lyra said sharply. "Right now, we focus on keeping Satou alive."
"Agreed," Loki said. "But once he’s safe, we’re hunting down everyone involved. No one attacks my people without consequences."
Morgana’s chanting reached a crescendo, and suddenly her body went completely limp. Her consciousness had successfully projected into the dream realm.
Now all they could do was wait and hope she could reach Satou in time.
In the dream realm, Satou was making progress toward the distant door.
The nightmare demons came at him in waves, and he’d learned quickly that most of his normal abilities didn’t function here. Shadow Step, Void Step, his elemental manipulations—all of them failed to activate in this twisted space.
