Chapter 29: Chapter 29: Crossed Arrows
"Impossible. Don’t ever go there. I’m telling you, even with guns, you’d be dead in seconds," Burgors said, his voice tense, like he had seen hell itself.
"So... there’s no chance?" Jaxon asked again, calm but persistent.
"It’s the last place you’d want to set foot in," Burgors replied immediately.
"Jaxon, you didn’t tell me about this," Natasha whispered sharply from his side, nudging him. "Why on earth do you want to go there?"
"I was hoping to scavenge some drones from it, but... maybe it’s not worth the risk."
"Wait, you’re looking for drones?" Hannah suddenly spoke up.
"Yes. If you have one, we could exchange it for food or whatever you need."
"No," Hannah answered quietly. "But I saw someone from our neighborhood using one last month. If we look for it, we might be able to find it."
Jaxon’s eyes lit up. "That’s great! Thank you, I owe you one."
"No, I’m not even sure if it’s still there. But I hope this helps."
"It’s a big help. Can you show me the exact location?"
"Gladly," Hannah said, pulling out her phone. She began showing him the spot and even marked it on a map app.
....
They did not stay long, mostly exchanging information. They talked about the infected they had encountered and the bits of news they had seen online.
"It’s getting late. We still need to search for the drone, so we’ll head out," Jaxon said as he and Natasha said their goodbyes.
"Be careful out there. I hope you find it," Hannah said, waving at them.
"If we do find the drone, I owe you one," Jaxon replied, waving back as they left.
After they had walked some distance, Natasha lightly elbowed his side.
"What was that for?" Jaxon complained, turning to her.
"Are you interested in that girl? Her eyes never left you the whole time we were there."
"What nonsense..."
"Nothing. Forget it," Natasha said, looking ahead.
’Am I imagining things? Or is she...’ Jaxon raised an eyebrow, then shook his head and cleared his thoughts as they continued walking.
Both of them stayed vigilant as they slowly made their way toward their destination.
They moved with care, always keeping something between them and the open streets, their eyes scanning every direction. No one knew what kind of strange infected might appear next.
After half an hour, they reached the place. It was a normal three story house, surrounded by walls. Nothing about it stood out at first glance.
"Do you see any infected?" Jaxon asked Natasha as she looked through the binoculars.
"I think it’s clear," she replied after another careful look.
"Same here, but we move slow," Jaxon said.
Behind the curtains inside the house, a shadow watched the two approaching figures. Then it quietly slipped away.
.....
Jaxon and Natasha followed their usual routine, checking each room one by one and making sure nothing was hiding inside.
"Clear," Natasha said quietly. "I don’t see any bloodstains or signs of infected. It looks abandoned."
"Alright," Jaxon replied. "Let’s search for the drone."
They began rummaging through the rooms, opening drawers and checking corners. The house had many bedrooms, and searching every floor took time. After a brief exchange of looks, they decided to split up and search separately.
While searching one of the bedrooms on the third floor, Jaxon was busy rummaging through drawers and cabinets.
Then a figure appeared at the doorway.
"Raise your hands. Turn around slowly."
The feminine voice behind him made his body stiffen.
’A person? How did she get this close? Did she come in from outside? We would have noticed...’ his thoughts raced.
He took a slow breath and forced himself to steady.
He figured that a weapon was pointing behind him, so he didn’t summon his rifle as he raised his hands.
"Are you the owner of this house? I apologize for intruding your home, I mean no harm."
"Silence! Turn around slowly, and don’t think of pulling anything stupid."
Jaxon frowned. ’The way she moved silently behind me and that commanding tone, she’s not an ordinary person.’ Though he couldn’t tell if the voice was hostile or not.
He slowly turned around and finally saw the person. Black long hair, pure white skin, a beautiful woman in her mid-twenties. But what caught his attention was that she was wearing police pants.
’Bow and arrow?’ Jaxon stared at the weapon pointed at him, confused and alert at the same time.
"Who are you?" the woman asked again.
"My name is Jaxon. I live nearby," he answered calmly. "Are you a police officer?"
"I’m the one asking questions here," she said, her voice commanding. "What are you doing in this house?"
Jaxon ignored her harsh tone and spoke honestly. "We’re looking for something we need. Someone from the neighborhood told us this place was empty. Her name is Hannah, if you know her."
Their eyes locked, neither willing to look away.
Then a sharp voice cut in.
"Move that weapon away from him."
Natasha appeared behind the woman, her pistol aimed straight at her back.
The woman did not flinch. She did not even turn around. "Lower your weapon," she said calmly. "Or he dies."
"I’m warning you," Natasha snapped, her voice tense, her eyes colder than usual. "Put it down or I’ll shoot."
The woman scoffed. "Go ahead, little girl. He’ll be dead before you pull the trigger."
"My gun is faster than your bow," Natasha shot back, refusing to back down.
"Then..."
Before the woman could finish, Jaxon raised his voice.
"Both of you, stop."
His words echoed through the quiet street, cutting through the tension.
The woman frowned and glanced at the windows, carefully checking to see if any infected had been drawn in.
Seeing her reaction, Jaxon spoke calmly. "Relax. We already checked the area. There are no infected nearby. Let’s stop this and lower our weapons."
"Do you really think I would hesitate to shoot that pretty face of yours?" the woman shot back.
