Chapter 44

Chapter 44: Chapter 44: Surrounded
But more kept coming, emerging from every side. Soon, the van was almost surrounded as the infected charged with relentless fury.
THUD... THUD... CRUNCH-CRACK.
The wheels of the vans rolled over bodies with wet, sickening sounds. Their van plowed through the horde, spraying black blood across the windshield.
A sudden thump shook the car. Jaxon’s shot went sideways. The impact rattled his arms and shoulders, making it almost impossible to aim.
"Don’t run over them, just keep your distance." Jaxon said to Natasha.
"I’ll try," she answered, gripping the wheel tight. But the infected kept pouring out from every direction, charging straight at the vans. There was hardly any room to maneuver.
Suddenly, three infected leapt and clung to the side of their van, smashing their heads repeatedly against the windshield.
BANG... BANG... BANG.
Cracks spiderwebbed across the glass, but Natasha jerked the wheel, skidding to the side. The tires ran over one body, crushing it under the tires.
"From the right!" Isabel shouted.
CRACK... CRACK.
Four more infected slammed into the van at once. The impact rocked the vehicle so hard it almost tilted. The car swayed left, then right, but Natasha fought to keep control and managed to keep it balanced.
More kept coming. They charged with rabid fury from the front, sides, and rear.
"The windshields," Cindy gasped, panic in her voice.
SHATTER... SHATTER!
A final crash broke through. A jagged hole appeared in the glass, and a hand shot inside, grabbing Cindy’s hair.
"Ahhh!" Cindy screamed as she was yanked backward, but she twisted and clutched the hand, refusing to let go. Its jaws snapped from outside, trying to force its way in.
"Cindy!" Isabel dove to help, striking the hand again and again. But the creature held tight, its grip almost unbreakable.
The van rocked violently as Natasha fought to keep it moving, trying to shake the creatures off while keeping everyone alive inside.
"Let go!" Isabel shouted. She swung her M16 and fired into the gap. Black blood splattered across the inside of the van.
Finally free, Cindy pulled back from the windows. She drew her pistol and started firing at every gap where claws or heads tried to force their way inside.
At the front, Jaxon stayed focused, shifting his rifle from one angle to another. He fired right, left, forward, and behind, as black blood sprayed everywhere, coating the windshield and the tires as bodies fell away.
"Jaxon..." Natasha’s voice trembled. She wanted to fight too, and help him.
"Just focus on driving."
In the other van, things were even worse. Burgors yelled as a hand gripped his arm from outside, pulling him toward the shattered window.
"Help! Help!" he cried.
Elena reacted immediately. She swung her knife and sliced through the infected’s arm. The creature howled in rage.
A second hand grabbed her hair from behind, but she twisted, drawing an arrow from her quiver and thrust it backward. The infected screeched as the arrow pierced it.
"Use the guns!" Elena yelled, grabbing the M16 Jaxon had given to Burgors. She fired at the broken windows, shooting down the infected trying to force their way in.
"Dieee!" Haris joined in, blasting the creatures that had almost entered through the shattered glass.
Inside the van, Hannah, Jannah, and Hiromi grabbed anything they could find, using them to push back against claws and snarling heads pressing in.
Every second was chaos.
Hannah’s eyes widened in terror as she looked up.
"From the top!" she screamed.
The infected were no longer just charging from the streets. They climbed walls and houses, crawling up like insects, then leaped down onto the vans, their fall making their attacks even more violent.
The roof of Burgors’ car dented under the heavy impacts. Metal groaned as one of the infected smashed down, and a face-shaped dent formed above his seat.
"Fuck, fuck, fuck!" Burgors yelled.
Another infected suddenly jumped straight in front of the windshield, blocking his view completely. Its mouth opened wide as it smashed its head against the glass.
The car swerved left and right, tires screeching against the road.
Bang. The infected’s head exploded, its body dropping away. The road ahead came back into view just in time. Burgors yanked the wheel, barely missing another car in front of them.
The shot came from the front van.
Jaxon lowered his rifle, jaw tight. He forced himself to stay calm. This was bad. no matter how many he killed, more kept coming. From the streets, from the sides, now from above.
It felt endless. If this continued, none of them would make it out.
Then a thought struck him.
"Cindy," Jaxon called out sharply. "Use the drone. Find us a path, now."
Cindy sprang into action, stretching for the drone. Suddenly, a massive infected slammed against the window, its upper body halfway inside.
It snapped its jaws at her arms. Cindy froze for a heartbeat...
Bang!
Bullets shredded the creature’s skull. Cindy twisted her head and saw Isabel, breathing hard, her rifle still raised.
"Thank you Mom!" Cindy gasped, ducking as the body thudded to the side.
Finally, she grabbed the drone and passed it to Jaxon. He tossed it out the window, letting it soar above the chaos.
From above, Cindy’s eyes scanned the scene. The van was almost completely surrounded. Hundreds of snarling, crawling figures pressed in from all sides. But through the drone’s camera, she spotted tiny gaps, places with fewer infected.
"Turn right after the corner!" she shouted into the comms.
Natasha steered sharply, following her directions. The vans dodged through narrow alleys and abandoned streets.
"Keep following the drone!" Jaxon said. "Stay on its path and don’t slow down!"
Bodies flew past as tires crushed some unlucky creatures. Glass shattered and metal groaned, but each turn brought them closer to open streets. The horde tried to catch up, but the vans stayed just ahead, slicing through the chaos.
Behind them, Burgors’ car followed, Haris and Elena holding their windows, firing at anything that got too close. Finally, the infected thinned, unable to follow them fast enough. And the two vans sped into quieter streets.
Minutes passed, Cindy guided them around the worst of the horde, weaving through gaps, zigzagging through narrow streets, and finally, the number of infected pressing in began to thin.
