My Stepmother Is an Ex-Demon Queen-Chapter 44 - 45 – Mother-In-Law from the Abyss

Chapter 44

Chapter 44: Chapter 45 – Mother-In-Law from the Abyss
Recap – Chapter 44: "The Wedding Planner from Hell"
Kazuki thought he’d seen enough strange things since Lilith, his gorgeous and terrifying ex-Demon Queen stepmother, came into his life.
But nothing could have prepared him for Clara Hellbloom, the wedding planner from Hell — literally. She didn’t just bring flower arrangements; she brought a team of imps, a floating skeleton harpist, and a seating chart cursed to shuffle guests every five minutes.
The rehearsal was chaos: bridesmaids throwing fireballs at each other, the best man turning into a feral wolf halfway through his speech, and the Glitter Goat declaring himself "Master of Ceremonies" without permission. Kazuki was barely keeping his sanity when Lilith looked at him with that dangerous smirk — the one that promised trouble — and whispered, "Wait until you meet my mother..."
It began with three knocks.
Not polite ones. Not even the "I’m here to kill you" knocks.
These were void knocks — each one echoing like a dungeon boss slamming its weapon on the floor.
Kazuki froze mid-step in the kitchen, holding a plate of toast.
Lilith? She didn’t even flinch. She sipped her morning tea like she’d been expecting the apocalypse to walk in.
Then the front door exploded open in a storm of shadow magic.
In swept Queen Morwen, the Abyssal Mother, wearing a gown made of starlight and voidstuff, her crown pulsing with dark energy. Behind her trailed six shadow beasts carrying luggage, a floating throne, and—
Kazuki squinted. "Is that a... bone gift basket?"
"It’s traditional," Lilith whispered back, not sounding apologetic.
Morwen’s eyes swept the room like a predator appraising prey.
"So..." she said slowly, her voice like silk over steel. "...This is the human you’re marrying?"
Kazuki swallowed hard. "Uh. Yep. That’s me. Hi. I made toast."
The Queen stared at the toast like it had personally insulted her bloodline.
"You think bread will earn my blessing?" she said.
Lilith stepped in smoothly. "Mother, behave. You’re here for the wedding, not an execution."
"I can multitask," Morwen replied, smiling sweetly — which somehow made her even more terrifying.
The Dinner from Hell
By sunset, the castle dining hall was filled with the smell of roasted abyssal crab, caramelized soulfruit, and danger.
Morwen decided to "evaluate" Kazuki during the family dinner. She had the seating arranged like a court hearing, with Kazuki in the "defendant’s seat" and the bridesmaids arranged like a jury of very biased peers.
The Glitter Goat sat beside him, loudly chewing hay dipped in honey wine.
The Queen interrogated Kazuki between bites of food.
"What’s your earning potential?"
"Do you have battle experience?"
"How many souls have you conquered?"
When Kazuki answered "None" to the last question, the entire table went silent. Even the goat stopped chewing and muttered, "Oof."
Morwen sighed like the universe had personally disappointed her.
"Lilith, darling... if you wanted to shock me, you could have just married another demon. This is..." She gestured vaguely at Kazuki. "...an investment in chaos."
Lilith smirked. "Exactly."
Extra Chaos — The Bridesmaids’ ’Test’
Halfway through the meal, two demon bridesmaids decided Kazuki’s worth could be proven with "The Demon Drink Trial." They placed a goblet of boiling purple liquid in front of him.
"What’s in it?" Kazuki asked.
"Don’t," Lilith said.
But Kazuki, desperate to look brave, took a gulp.
It tasted like cinnamon... then lightning... then regret.
The room cheered as he coughed up a small puff of smoke.
"Not bad," one bridesmaid said.
"Beginner’s luck," the other added.
The Glitter Goat patted him on the shoulder. "I once drank that and woke up married to a cactus."
Private Moment with Morwen
After dinner, Morwen asked to speak with Kazuki alone in the dark library.
The shadows seemed thicker here, whispering faintly as if eavesdropping.
She studied him for a long time. "You’re not strong. You’re not powerful. And yet... you have something demons rarely possess."
Kazuki blinked. "Uh... charm?"
"Stupidity," she corrected. "The kind that makes mortals walk into impossible situations and somehow survive. My daughter likes that."
Kazuki wasn’t sure if this was a compliment or a death sentence.
Morwen’s lips curved into the smallest of smirks. "Hurt her, and there will be nowhere in the realms you can hide from me. But... make her happy, and I will call you son."
Before he could respond, she vanished in a swirl of black smoke, leaving behind the faint scent of starfire and intimidation.
[EXPANDED DESSERT EXPLOSION SCENE]
Kazuki had just begun to relax when a waiter brought out dessert—a towering confection of chocolate, molten caramel, and something that looked suspiciously like it was still moving.
"This is the Abyssal Delight," Lilith whispered to him. "Mother’s favorite. And don’t ask what’s in it."
Kazuki, of course, immediately asked, "What’s in it?"
The waiter, a horned demon with the world’s most terrifying smile, replied:
"Sugar, cream, chocolate... and the faint souls of those who died trying to perfect the recipe."
Kazuki laughed nervously. "Hah... right. Souls. Cool."
He cut into the dessert with his fork. The moment the caramel was breached, the whole structure trembled.
Lilith’s eyes widened. "Uh... maybe don’t—"
Too late.
The dessert erupted like a sugary volcano, launching molten chocolate across the table. A bridesmaid shrieked as a glob hit her in the face. Another demon caught some in her mouth and sighed blissfully.
The Glitter Goat, however, was less impressed.
"It’s too sweet," it grumbled, licking its own horns where the dessert had splattered.
Kazuki tried to help by grabbing napkins, but in the process, he knocked over the goblet of Demonwine. The dark liquid spread across the pristine tablecloth like a bloodstain.
"Smooth," Lilith muttered, but her lips twitched with barely suppressed laughter.
Morwen, for her part, was silent. She slowly dabbed at her chin with a napkin, eyes fixed on Kazuki with a look that said, If you survive tonight, it will not be by my mercy.
Then, as the servants scrambled to clean up the chaos, the air in the room shifted—growing colder, heavier.
Lilith’s smile faded.
"He’s here," she whispered.
And the doors slammed open.
The Twist
Just as dessert arrived, a massive explosion shook the house.
Morwen’s expression darkened. "He’s here."
"Who?" Kazuki asked nervously.
Lilith’s tone was flat. "My ex-husband. Also known as The King of Blades. Also known as the man who doesn’t know when to stop crashing my weddings."
And from the doorway, a deep voice thundered:
"Lilith! I’ve come to reclaim what’s mine!"
Kazuki’s jaw dropped. The man standing there was built like a gladiator, wearing armor dripping with black ichor. And in his hand? A bouquet.
Lilith groaned. "This is going to be another long night."
Next Chapter Preview – Chapter 46: The Demon Ex-Husband’s Toast and the Bride’s Counterattack
The reception hall falls silent as the ex-husband stands, lifting his crystal glass with the kind of smug confidence only a man who’s never been punched by Kazuki can have. His gaze sweeps the room, lingering far too long on Lilith, as if he’s about to deliver some grand romantic speech from their "good old days."
Spoiler: no one wants to hear it—except maybe the Demon Bridesmaids, who are clutching their champagne in anticipation of the chaos.
Kazuki feels his jaw tighten with every word. The man’s "toast" starts sweet enough, but within seconds it’s dripping with passive-aggressive digs, inside jokes that exclude everyone but Lilith, and a few suspiciously pointed jabs about "human men trying to play in demon leagues."
The crowd laughs awkwardly, unaware they’re watching an emotional demolition in progress.
Lilith, however, isn’t laughing. Her demonic aura spikes just enough for Kazuki to feel the hair on his arms stand up. Under the table, her fingers lace through his—not gently, but with the firm grip of someone silently saying: Don’t punch him. Yet.
Then, just as Kazuki thinks she’s going to let it slide... Morwen, ever the wildcard, rises from her chair like she’s been waiting for this moment all night.
With a casual wave of her hand, twelve champagne flutes lift from the tables and start spinning above the guests’ heads, catching the light in a mesmerizing display. Everyone claps, thinking it’s a magical showpiece.
Kazuki knows better.
This isn’t entertainment.
This is war.
The ex-husband’s smirk falters for the first time. And that’s when Kazuki realizes—this toast is about to end with a bang.
