Chapter 30: Devourer of Ghosts
Li Zhen suddenly grabbed the snarling Red-Eyed Bat with his left hand, then brought his right hand down hard on its head.
A fine needle — no one knew when it had appeared in his hand — pierced into the top of the bat’s skull.
The Red-Eyed Bat let out a sharp “screech,” its scarlet eyes glimmering faintly red, its expression more ferocious than ever — though still less so than Li Zhen, who held it.
Biting down on the tip of his tongue, Li Zhen spat a mouthful of blood mist over the Red-Eyed Bat’s body.
The thick, drifting blood mist condensed into droplets, flowing down along the fine needle stuck in the bat’s head.
“Eat it!”
Li Zhen released his grip.
The blood-stained Red-Eyed Bat instantly vanished from his hand.
The Little Girl in Red, her face pale as ash, suddenly froze in horror as her figure flickered wildly — as if she were being chased by something terrible.
Then, without warning, she stopped moving, and the Red-Eyed Bat appeared upon her body.
A shrill “screech-screech” rang out as the Red-Eyed Bat opened its grotesque mouth and bit down on the Little Girl in Red’s head.
“You… so ruthless…”
The Evil Spirit — though formless by nature — cried out in genuine pain, as if it had suffered a tangible wound.
Its voice weakened, then it turned into a plume of mist and was devoured by the bat.
As soon as it swallowed that mist, the Red-Eyed Bat shrieked miserably, flapping its wings frantically, struggling to fly toward Li Zhen.
No matter how hard it tried, it could not reach him, and at last, it fell before him in agony.
At that moment, Li Zhen had no strength to care about the bat.
The instant the Red-Eyed Bat devoured the Evil Spirit, a freezing chill engulfed him, as though he had fallen into an icy abyss. His entire body turned cold, and he lost all sensation in an instant.
That immense chill seemed to gush endlessly from deep within his body, as though his invisible soul and consciousness were gradually freezing solid.
Alongside that chill came the violent rage and brutal images that Li Zhen had been suppressing.
He had not actually witnessed many cruel things in his life, yet now, his mind flooded with the gruesome scenes of the Evil Spirit’s killings within the high-rise building.
Many people had been murdered in all sorts of horrific ways, tasting indescribable torment in their final moments before falling into endless darkness.
Those faces of despair struck with tremendous force.
And yet — the violent Li Zhen did not feel discomfort.
Instead, he felt a faint sense of pleasure.
Those emotions did not belong to him.
They were the Evil Spirit’s emotions.
That had to be it…
This was the side effect of Devourer of Ghosts.
Li Zhen, his face pale and grim, closed his eyes.
A low, eerie incantation murmured intermittently from his lips.
“Yin wind… open the throat, blood sacrifices the Ghost Gate… devour the remnant soul, gnaw the broken bone… three souls enter the belly, seven spirits turn to power, black flames burn the heart…”
The Red-Eyed Bat rolled endlessly on the ground, shrieking, its body swelling and shrinking like an inflated balloon.
Upon its grotesquely bulging skin, a horrifying, twisted human face faintly appeared.
“You… will die a terrible death!”
The ghost’s piercing curse overwhelmed Li Zhen’s chanting.
I was never meant to die well anyway…
Li Zhen slowly extended his trembling right hand.
He pressed it down.
The fine needle on the Red-Eyed Bat’s head sank completely into its skull.
A small stream of blood flowed from Li Zhen’s palm, following the needle into the bat’s head.
“By the Bat of Hell, devour all evils, Cha-Ka-Raksha…”
The Red-Eyed Bat let out a few weak “screech-screech” sounds before its voice faded away.
The Evil Spirit’s scream gradually disappeared as well.
Had there been no disruptions earlier, Li Zhen would have reached Cheung Kam-Keung’s home and attempted to devour the ghost himself while it was in its weakened state.
Although Master Danyang’s sudden appearance had altered the course of events, it had not changed the outcome.
Now the Evil Spirit was even weaker — ideal for devouring.
There was almost no effective resistance during the process.
Li Zhen had chosen this “ghost-against-ghost” approach not only to complete his task but also to seize the fastest, least interrupted way to devour the Evil Spirit.
His later decision to come directly here was largely to find such an opportunity.
Once that powerful ghost was devoured, the Red-Eyed Bat would undergo a complete transformation.
As Li Zhen’s life-bound Evil Creature connected to his spirit, its evolution would also cause his Head-Descending Curse to advance by leaps and bounds.
The torches, the pond, the eerie mist — all vanished in silence.
The surroundings turned chaotic and distorted.
It looked like a damp underground cavern — or perhaps a hollow space beneath the building’s foundation.
Li Zhen sat cross-legged in one corner of the hollow, eyes closed, his breath steady.
A strange, rhythmic chant drifted faintly from his lips.
……
“Master, Master…”
He did not know how long had passed when Li Zhen seemed to hear a familiar voice.
He could no longer tell whether he was dreaming or if someone was actually calling him.
“Master, are you all right?”
Li Zhen struggled to open his eyes, seeing a blurry light source moving toward him.
He wiped at his eyes, but the more he wiped, the blurrier things became.
The light came closer, and a broad silhouette swayed in front of him. The man’s worried voice said, “Master, your eyes… they’re bleeding…”
“Blood?”
Li Zhen suddenly understood.
He wiped the blood from his eyes with his sleeve.
Gradually, his vision cleared.
Fatty Wong’s round face came into view before him.
“Master, are you all right?”
“I’m fine. I just need to rest for a while.”
“Then… what about the Evil Spirit?”
“It’s gone. How’s Siu Lan?”
“She was sent to the hospital before dawn. The doctors said… she’s going to give birth today.”
“What time is it now?”
“A little past seven in the morning. I didn’t dare come find you before daylight.”
“You did well.”
Li Zhen tried to get up, but as soon as he moved, his body went numb, and he almost fell.
Fatty Wong hurriedly caught him.
The absence of the Red-Eyed Bat’s voice left Li Zhen momentarily uneasy.
His mind was foggy, and it took him a while to recall what he had done the previous night.
He picked up the unconscious Red-Eyed Bat from the ground and placed it inside the pouch at his chest.
The bat seemed to have undergone a drastic change, but Li Zhen had no energy left to examine it.
His spirit had been pushed to the very limit, and all he wanted was a deep, uninterrupted sleep.
To Fatty Wong, however, the scene before him was something else entirely.
Master Li had not only arranged his actions with precision but had also risked his life to descend into the depths of the building to face that dreadful ghost himself…
Judging from the Master’s current state, he must have gone through a brutal battle last night — perhaps fighting for his life till dawn.
Even the Master’s most beloved bat had fallen unconscious — proof of how perilous the confrontation had been.
Though his own task had been risky, it paled utterly in comparison.
This… this was a true Master.
Even if his methods were a little dark…
Supporting Li Zhen carefully, Fatty Wong’s heart was filled with nothing but awe and admiration.
