Chapter 47: Why Believe That Woman?
The moment Zheng Nan saw the eerie Ah Ken, he instinctively tried to close the door.
But before it could shut, Ah Ken shoved it open from outside.
Zheng Nan, who was still holding the door, was flung backward by the sudden force and crashed heavily onto the floor behind it.
Ignoring the sharp pain shooting through his knees, he shouted for help while crawling frantically toward Li Zhen on all fours.
By now, Wu Mingjiang had reacted. He rushed to the sofa, grabbed the hammer he had brought, and swung it fiercely at Ah Ken.
Yet even after being struck by the hammer, Ah Ken did not retreat. Instead, he charged wildly toward Wu Mingjiang.
“So vicious?!”
Wu Mingjiang was startled once again.
He ran to a corner by the wall, raised the guandao, and slashed at Ah Ken.
Ah Ken merely waved both arms, sending the roaring guandao flying away.
The force numbed Wu Mingjiang’s hands, forcing him to drop the weapon and sprint toward Li Zhen, shouting,
“Master, help! This thing’s insanely ferocious!”
Zheng Nan and the other cowered behind Li Zhen, trembling uncontrollably.
In Li Zhen’s hand was a frog.
He dipped his right index finger into the dust he had scraped off the wall earlier and stabbed it straight into the frog’s mouth.
Then, with both hands, he tore the frog apart and threw it into a small bucket of rotting entrails.
“Pour it on him.”
At Li Zhen’s command, Zheng Nan and Wu Mingjiang didn’t hesitate. They lifted the bucket and splashed its contents all over the rampaging Ah Ken.
The stench of rot instantly filled every corner of the room.
Like a toy whose batteries had suddenly died, the ferocious Ah Ken stiffened and collapsed to the ground.
Hearing the commotion, Leung Hinyuk cautiously opened the door, peeking out together with Zheng Ze, who was pinching his nose.
Zheng Nan weakly waved a hand and cursed, “You must’ve died from stupidity in your past life… Hide already!”
Leung Hinyuk gave an “Oh” and shut the door again.
After catching his breath, Zheng Nan cautiously approached the motionless Ah Ken, his face showing a mix of relief and pity. “Should we take him to a hospital?”
“What hospital?” Wu Mingjiang came up beside him. “Might as well send him straight to the funeral home.”
Zheng Nan smacked Wu Mingjiang’s shoulder. “You heartless bastard, can’t you at least show a little decency?”
Wu Mingjiang rubbed his bald head. “Even you’re talking about decency, Ah Nan? The sun must’ve risen from the west. Master, is there any saving him?”
“How can one save the dead?” Li Zhen slowly walked up to the corpse.
The man’s face was torn and riddled with long nails, each one looking as though it had grown out of his flesh. The curse on him was clearly Nai Mi’s Nail Curse—he had probably died long before arriving here.
Among the Ten Curses of Nanyang, Li Zhen was quite familiar with this one.
Those struck by it resembled the “Pinhead” from a foreign horror film.
Staring at the corpse’s nail-covered face, Li Zhen even felt a phantom pain creep across his own skin.
This curse truly was horrifying…
From the corpse, Li Zhen noticed something peculiar.
Unlike most other Head-Descending Curses, this one forcibly imprisoned the victim’s soul within their body, turning the dead into a controllable puppet.
Like the corpse before them—painless, fearless, capable of harming both the living and the dead—utterly terrifying.
Had Li Zhen not prepared in advance by obtaining a trace of Nai Mi’s blood, he might have suffered greatly had he encountered such a cursed puppet unprepared.
“Master, what do we do now?” Zheng Nan swallowed nervously. “The night’s not even over yet, and Nai Mi’s already started killing again…”
“He likely used some special method to forcibly cast the curse.” Li Zhen crouched and dipped a finger into the corpse’s blood. “This is a good chance to locate him.”
Zheng Nan looked at the blood on Li Zhen’s fingertip in surprise. “Didn’t Ah Bang already find Nai Mi’s hiding place and tell us? Master Chen and his men already went to kill him…”
“Why would you trust the words of a strange woman?” Li Zhen took out a sheet of white paper and began drawing distorted sigils with the blood.
Zheng Nan hesitated. “Master, you mean that Sister Mei can’t be trusted?”
“I don’t know,” Li Zhen replied curtly.
Lighting the completed sigil over a candle, he let the ashes fall onto the table, then gestured with one hand.
A huge Red-Eyed Bat swooped down from Zheng Nan’s curtains, startling both Zheng Nan and Wu Mingjiang.
“Master, is that your… pet? A vampire bat?” Zheng Nan asked in a low voice.
Li Zhen silently sprinkled the ashes over the bat’s head.
Suddenly, the phone rang, making Zheng Nan and Wu Mingjiang jump again.
Cursing under his breath, Zheng Nan went to answer it.
Even from a distance, Li Zhen and Wu Mingjiang could hear the yelling from the other side.
“…Damn it! There’s some bloody Nanyang guy here! I’ve got a hundred brothers with me… if you don’t want to get hacked to death—”
…
Blood dripped from He Mei’s mouth as she saw Nai Mi rise to his feet, her expression instantly changing. “I can help you!”
“Help me? Help me with what? With what could you possibly help me?” Nai Mi stepped closer to He Mei. “With your little ghosts?”
He chanted softly and reached out with one hand.
The altar behind him shuddered, and an invisible little ghost was instantly bound mid-air, shrieking as it was sucked into a small piece of black wood atop the altar.
This was his own altar—of course, it wasn’t without protection.
This foolish woman had barged straight into his altar, conveniently delivering him not only a little ghost but also an excellent material for a new curse.
“I’ve met that Head-Descending Master—he’s powerful! You’ll need my help; otherwise, you won’t be able to defeat him! You won’t even live through tonight!” He Mei gritted her teeth, blood running freely from the corner of her lips.
The little ghost had been her personal creation; its destruction by Nai Mi had caused severe backlash.
Watching her painstaking work destroyed pained her deeply—even without the backlash.
“Still spouting nonsense.” Nai Mi’s smile turned cruel. “I was just short on materials, and you came right to me.”
He Mei quickly said, “This is Hong Kong Island, not Nanyang! If they want, they can call in many people to deal with you!”
“Even if you can handle that Head-Descending Master, how will you deal with the rest? Do you think he’ll fight you fairly?”
Nai Mi paused.
He was too violent by nature, and He Mei, terrified that she might lose her chance to speak, seized the moment to continue rapidly, “I have business here in Hong Kong Island. I have connections—and I know their plans. I can help you!”
Nai Mi’s eyes flicked up and down, studying her. “Who are you? Why would you help me?”
As the oppressive aura faded, He Mei finally exhaled in relief.
Wiping the blood from her lips, she said, “I’m from Nanyang too. Why wouldn’t I help you?”
“You take me for a fool? A righteous Head-Descending Master helping a wicked one like me?” Nai Mi sneered, the veins bulging on his forehead making his face even more grotesque.
“What matters isn’t why I’m helping you, but the fact that I can help you.” He Mei looked calmly toward the window. “If you don’t believe me, look outside—they’ve probably already arrived.”
Nai Mi glanced at the window, then back at He Mei.
She opened her hands. “I can’t escape. I wouldn’t lie to you.”
